  1. 5/5Love my 800 Grill/Smoker, the easiest and cooks with the best flavors

Love the grill and how easy it is to cook with minimal effort while using the meat temperature probes (up to 4). I recently had an idea for the app alerts after my son basted my turkey while I went inside for a moment, he accidentally put so much butter on it it fell onto the box (325F), it flashed while I was still away and fire charred the bird. Wondering if there was a way the app could recognize when the set temp is lower vs actual temperature rising higher than the set temperature then triggering an alert. Hope your able to make that improvement on the app. Other than that I can’t stress how much I love cooking on my grill and all the complements I get on how good the food flavors are when they come off the grill BTW I also use a combo of charcoal, lump and real wood for excellent flavoring.

  2. 2/5App & smoker won’t stay connected or re-pair

I have used my smoker 5 times and each time I’ve smoked something that tasted 8+ hours. It gives me updates of the smoker temperature, and set the temperature and cook time when I tried it for the first time today. Each time though, after a few hours, it won’t remain paired. Today everything was fine (3.5-4 hours) until I tried to change the set temperature from the app. It gave me an error telling me to re-pair them and I followed the instructions it gives for re-pairing, which are minimal, and it didn’t work. The previous times I tried to re-pair it using the full process for setting the smoker up from the beginning and it didn’t work either. Each time I used the smoker the next time, days or a week later, when I power on the smoker and launch the app together, it consistently pairs correctly. So when I powered it off the previous time with them not working, didn’t do anything afterwards and it powers on fine. Today, I set the temperature and duration with no problem after the power on and again after a while the cycle repeated. The panel, cabling, antenna and insulation are installed as per the instructions and haven’t been damaged. Also, I get way too many notifications that the set temp is reached. The temp fluctuates a lot triggering the extra ones, yet I didn’t open the door or remove and replace the device used to add wood chips.

  3. 2/5Almost unusable

I love my gravity smoker. But this app is absolutely terrible. Sometimes when you switch away from the app for a while and come back to the app, it’s not actually connected to the smoker. This result in it showing an inaccurate temperature. Also if you try to set the temperature, it makes it look like the temperature gets set, but never actually set the temperature. After some time, the connectivity comes back, but without any indication. Occasionally, I have to go back to the main screen of the app and tap on the smoker again to get it to refresh. This has always been a problem. Masterbuilt improved this slightly, but it still just sometimes doesn’t work right. The other problem with this app is Notifications. For some reason that it should create a critical notification when the smoker reaches that temperature. There is nothing critical about this. It should just be a normal notification. But then if the smoker can’t maintain temperature, like charcoal runs out, it doesn’t alert you at all. The smoker could drop to ambient temperature outside and it would never alert you that there is a problem. That is literally a huge problem if the smoker can’t maintain temperature. To me, it feels like the people writing and testing this app don’t actually use their smoker to smoke meat. I am planning to swap out the controller on my gravity smoker because this app is so bad.

  4. 2/5Constant issues

I have a gravity series 1050 smoker. Nearly every single time I use it I have to delete my smoker and completely reinstall it in the app. Masterbuilt has sent me two different modules with the Wi-Fi antenna and I continue to have the issues so it has to be with this app on the rare occasion the app does work, once I get in the app there is a small square in the middle of the screen that will not go away. It looks like a button, but it does nothing when I try to set the temperature in the app. It works maybe 10% of the time if I’m lucky, there are a lot of opportunities with this. I’ve deleted the app re-downloaded it, make sure it’s consistently up-to-date, made sure there were no network issues, made sure that my phone and were on the same wireless network and the issues continue. Theoretically, this would be great, but the reliability of it is very poor. The actual smoker works great, but one of the reasons that I went and got it was because of the option of having the app and being able to be remote and control it in the first place. because of the issues with remote connectivity, even when I’m standing right next to it, I cannot recommend anyone by a Masterbuilt smoker if this is something that they are looking for because it is not reliable at all and has given me nothing but issues.

  5. 1/5Thermal cook off (BE AWARE)

Earlier this year I smoked a brisket for my daughter’s rehearsal dinner. I’ve smoked brisket hundreds of times and I’ve been grilling for well over 40 years. I put the brisket on at 11 pm so it would be ready when we had to leave midday the following day. Later that night I had to get some sleep before the wedding. I got up at 6am to check on the brisket. When I walked outside, the fan was on full speed and the smoker was beeping. When I opened the smoker, what was a 13 pound brisket was a 3 pound hunk of charcoal. The smoker took off and the temperature exceeded 1000 degrees! Needless to say, that wasn’t going to be on the table for the rehearsal dinner. $500 later purchasing brisket from a local restaurant that didn’t have anywhere near the same quality of brisket, I at least was able to have something on the table. When I reached out to the company, they requested pictures. I sent pics of the smoker and a screenshot of the runway temperature during the cook. The company’s reply: it’s your fault because there was a buildup of grease. Hard to imagine that if it was a grease fire in the grill side it would melt the firewall on the charcoal side when the two sides are separated. They sent new parts so I could rebuild it except for switches that melted. It’s working for now, but I keep a very close eye on it. Luckily I have the smoker far enough away from any structures that it didn’t catch anything else on fire. The company refused to reimburse me for the inconvenience of their defective product.
