1. 5/5Review from a Blind Person's Perspective

   This app could be better. When I got my first appliance I had minor difficulties getting the app working. A little research fixed that problem. The issues I have deal with how much control is available and broken accessibility in the latest update. I have a dishwasher, front load washer, and dryer. When you set the remote to on, you can change the cycles on both the washer and dryer. On the washer, you can set the temperature and spin speed. But you can't set the extra rinse option. You can set the fresh care option. On the dryer, you can set the cycle but not much else. You can download custom cycles to all units. But the most important issue came with the recent update. I use Voiceover which is a screen reader built into the iPhone. It allows a blind person to use the iPhone independently. With this latest update the main screen doesn't read properly with Voiceover. When I swipe to my products I either get a click and no text or something similar to this. Washer {wnm5842}{mxhnfb5380} power off. Now while I can determine that I'm working with the washing machine, it never displayed this type of mess until the recent update. Before it would say Washer power off, or Washer standby without the extra letters and symbols. The reason I got Lg wifi appliances is because of the accessibility of the app. Please don't break it as I rely on the app to determine the status of my appliances. Also please enable complete controls for the appliances as it could be much easier for a blind person to control them from a smart devices vs having to use the touch screen on the actual appliance. I would give this app 4 stars if it weren't for the broken accessibility in this latest update.

2. 2/5Not a Smart app for laundry appliances

   Went with an LG washer & dryer in part because they were supposed to be Smart appliances, with this Smart app that lets you control the appliances remotely. Not smart at all, really nothing more than a monitoring app. You still have to manually push the power button on the units, because you can’t turn them on with the app, and the power turns off almost immediately when a cycle ends. While standing there anyway I cannot imagine what point there would be in using the app instead of just pushing a couple buttons. Even as a monitoring app it’s buggy- washer time is frequently off by as much as 10 minutes- I’ve gone down there because it said there was only a minute or two left, to find out there’s 10 minutes or more. Dryer frequently sends a “dryer has been stopped due to a problem” notification when the cycle is complete. I picked this set in part because I expected to be able to set up a wash load, and start it remotely so it’s freshly done when I get home or get up in the morning, and to be able to fluff clothes left in the dryer without having to go down two flights of stairs to push a couple buttons, then back up for 10 minutes, and back down again. Not sure what the logic is behind this limitation, if they’re Smart appliances they should know not to start if there is a problem, just like my car. I will say that I really like the washer and dryer, but they should not be advertised as being able to be controlled remotely.

3. 1/5Won’t work without location

   UPDATE: responding to the developer… The product only works over WiFi so that means location is always needed. Secondly, gps location is not needed to connect to devices on wireless, or scan for them. The device is already connected - the app just needs to find it on my LAN (other apps do this without location). I know if you’re scanning for wifi SSID’s you could get my location using a wifi AP database (so maybe are asking for location for legal reasons, not technical ones), but you don’t need to do that if I don’t want to scan for SSID’s. All I want to do is control one LG device… and it will not let me add any without location. Bad enough it forces you to signup, give them your email address, etc. Even wants your phone (optional at least on that one). But apparently location is a deal breaker - won’t work without it. There is absolutely no need for this app to know my gps coordinates to add a device (I run software teams - I know how it works). I know where I left my device, don’t need it to remember for me. And I don’t need value add services to control my devices. Deleted until LG gets a clue. I don’t care if this giant corporation says they “respect my privacy”. I’ve been in cybersecurity for near 20 years - and one thing I have learnt is that not one person at any large corporation cares one bit about your personal privacy. The privacy policies are mainly there to ensure they can’t be sued when they give your info to one of the hundreds of contractors they use.

4. 4/5Filter monitoring is ridiculous

   This review is specifically about using the app to monitor the filter status of mini split indoor units. The app allows you to see the status of the filter, but it does not notify you when the filter needs to be changed. You actually have to open the app and go to the section that has information about the filters so that is the first problem. The second problem is that the filter status resets automatically after the filter reaches 0%, which does not make any sense because if you have not changed the filter (because you didn’t know it had reached 0%… because the app did NOT notify you) why would it simply auto-reset and start over at 100%?? The third issue is that once you have cleaned the filters there is absolutely no way to reset the filter status in the app so you’re perennially stuck with an incorrect filter status because 1) the app did not notify you to clean the filter. 2) The app reset the filter status once the filter reached 0% even though you hadn’t cleaned the filter and 3) you cleaned the filter and there’s no way to reset the filter status to 100% so your filter status will always be incorrect. Please fix this or remove this function from the app.

5. 3/5Oven DOES NOT need cleaning!

   Finally, when I went to App Settings, Product Notifications I got more than just a blank screen. I was able to set the Oven Needs To Be Cleaned to Every Month. I did a total reinstall a few weeks ago but still got the blank screen. However, it worked this morning. Getting notifications like Oven is Pre-heated is very useful. Old Bad Review I was awoken this morning at 4:30 AM by a ThinQ notification that my oven needs cleaning! I cleaned the oven last week and I’m still getting notifications. I’m very happy with my LG induction range. I like getting notifications for the timer and the oven pre -heating, etc , but LG, please fix this app. I got another spurious early morning notification again that the Oven Needs To Be Cleaned today. LG support previously responded by telling me to turn off the oven notifications. However, you can only tell off ALL notificationsI. I responded to them with why don’t you just fix the bug? FINAL REVIEW After reinstalling the app, I was finally able to access the settings and change the notification that the Oven Needs To Be Cleaned message from weekly to monthly. LG should just remove this or let it be turned off completely. When I open the oven door I can clearly see if it needs to be cleaned. On a positive note, I really like my induction range.

   I've never had a more unreliable TV app than the LG ones. I have a Roku TV, and a Vizio TV I control with their respective apps and can always turn on or control but something about the LG app unsyncs itself almost every day. If I leave the TV on and it goes into screensaver mode with the clock then I can almost guarantee that the app won't work. If I press the power on button on the app like it requests it turns the TV off and then I have to turn it back on, which is only if it recognizes it.
