  1. 3/5Problems with the new app changes

I usually don’t write reviews but with all the problems the app is having at the moment I decided to write this. It’s been taking a long time to start up, crashing, zombie chases glitching out and tracking has been off both on screen and with the audio. Also when the chase audio plays and you hear the zombies, normally the audio would play and warn you about the incoming zombies. During this and the 20, 50 meter warnings the audio would muffle your music. Now it’s just completely muffles the music even when no audio is playing and zombie chase are 100 meters with tracking not working correctly so I’m sprinting far more then I’m supposed to. Zombie noises would never muffle the music. They would slowly increase in audio as you got closer to them without the muffling. I’ve been using the app since 2015 when I was in middle school running track and cross and never once ran into a problem. Now with the app change it’s been doing all of this and making it impossible to use the app to train. Please I hope this gets fixed because I don’t want to stop using this app because of all the sudden problems. (Once the issues have been fixed I’ll switch the rating to a 5 because other than the problems it’s having the app is super good. Just that the problem make it practically unusable for some who’s been using it for years.)

  2. 5/5Abel Runner For Life

I started using Zombies Run 10+ years ago, near when they first launched. I don’t love running, but I loved the stories that came to life in my headset, and felt it made all my workouts so much more fun. I also really appreciate all the thought that has gone into the features in the app, from being able to listen to my own music from whatever player I decide, to being able to use ZRX regardless of whether I’m running outside, on a treadmill, or even just rowing, weightlifting, or jumping rope. The quality of the narration is fantastic. And the virtual races are always so different and creative. I stuck with them as they went from a single-purchase app to an annual subscription, and I have zero regrets. And they have stuck with their users, through the pandemic and beyond. Making workouts fun and consistent is an investment in myself - I’m a 40-year old woman and I’m still the same petite weight build I was in my late twenties. Plus - I’m so invested in these characters. Wishing all the good luck and success to the ZRX crew.

  3. 2/5I gave it one week...

I heard about this app years ago, but didn’t download it to check it out until this week. I thought it would be an interesting addition to my runs, but so far I’m not liking the ‘freemium’ aspects of this app, and from what I’ve read in reviews it sounds like I would have preferred the old version that was a flat price. For starters, I’ve run five missions (not all on consecutive days) but now the sixth/next mission is telling me “upgrade to pro membership or unlock on -MONTH DAY-“. Umm, what? No. I’m still not even sure the app is WORTH a subscription price, and being locked out of the next mission for the next FIVE days is pushing me closer to wanting to delete the app than purchase a membership. Also, supplies collected is capped at 10 on a mission for free users. There’s no incentive to push a littler harder and run a little farther than yesterday with a cap on supplies. That incentive lies within the subscription/pro membership realm, which, again, I’m still not sure is worth the price. Also, as far as I can tell one week in, the items (supplies/artifacts) you collect on runs don’t actually do anything. The town feature is ok, but you can’t edit the placement of buildings and it doesn’t display how much you need to expand the land around Abel. Achievements are minimal (I only see five!), which is a big missed opportunity IMO. What I’ve been able to experience for free so far isn’t leaving me wanting more. It does have potential, but for me, the ‘freemium’ model is a turn off and while I’m going to give it one more week, I’m not optimistic it will last past that.

  4. 5/5I want to love this app but.....

I have ran a few times with this app and I love the immersive story line and the zombie chases but that’s were the fun stops. I’ve ran outside with it and it seemed to connect with my watch just fine. But the other times I have ran in the gym it won’t connect to my Apple Watch 3. Also it seems almost after every transmission it won’t go back to playing my music. I after to stop running and either pause the run a couple of times to get it to play or advance the song a couple of times to get it playing again. Also I have noticed that when I am at a jog and am getting chased by zombies I can’t get away even when I’m almost at a dead sprint....which seems crazy when your at 5 miles or more and are having to sprint to escape....but I can’t escape and end up having supplies dropped to escape!! I got this app years ago when it first dropped and came back to it....it seems really buggy now and also like the developers aren’t putting the time in it to fix the bugs....I am will to pay for the subscription but not with these kinda bugs.....I did order the book and am looking at doing the virtual race....so hoping they get these bugs worked out!!!!

  5. 3/5Used to be great, but the story has suffered since season 5

I loved Zombies Run - it's helped me go from not running to doing 2-3 5K runs per week, and really helped me implement a lifestyle change. In the first three seasons, I loved the writing (some episodes are a little silly, but by and large it's compelling), loved the voice acting, and loved the base building. Be sure to listen to radio mode too - it adds a lot to the experience and some depth to the world. I typically do a half hour run listening to an episode, followed by half an hour walk with radio mode, which works perfectly for me. However, three things have happened in the last few seasons that irk me greatly. First, the timeline has become inconsistent - all the cultural references indicate the zombie outbreak was meant to be contemporaneous with the release of season 1, circa 2011. However, later seasons have available AI and technology that simply wasn’t available in 2011, and this greatly distracts from the immersion in the story. Second, some plot lines have essentially jumped the shark - I can believe in one unbelievable thing (zombies), but don’t introduce additional ones - without providing spoilers, I’d say the Moonchild story ends up at a ridiculous place, as does the Veronica storyline. Finally, there’s too much of the “we’re going to die, oh, phew, we were saved at the last second”. You can get away with that once maybe, but it gets ridiculous after a while. I really hope they can improve the storyline for season 8, and that they plan out multi season story arcs.
