   We have had our RT340 for a few years now and always loved the wifi feature. When our wifi company updated our system for faster speed for streaming, we could not get the wifi feature to work anymore. Rectec’s customer service was wonderful in trying to work it out for us. It turns out we needed the updated controller. They didn’t try to sell me one but I asked about it because i was sure I wasn’t the only one with this problem. It was going to be a couple of hundred dollars and we decided it would be worth it because I love being able to monitor the probes when we are smoking meat. The person I was talking to said she would call me back, which she did. She sold it to us for half the normal price. I was really grateful. The controller came about a week later and my husband was able to install it. I was so grateful when I went out and was able to hook our phones to it right away. Thank you for the customer service that I’m not used to seeing anymore. I loved being able to talk to a person. We love the grill.

2. 5/5Temperature graphs are missing after the latest update

   Removing the ability to display the graph of the temperature and the probes’ readings over time was the one crucial feature that distinguished your app from Traeger, and now you’ve removed it in this update. While it wasn’t a frequent occurrence during my thermal runway experience, I could still observe it in the graph. Apparently, your tech support department prefers to conceal the issues rather than provide users with accurate data that could be utilized. Updates are supposed to enhance functionality, not eliminate features. All of my cooking, data, comments, dates, times, temperatures, and feedback that I’ve meticulously entered into my app over the past two years have been erased. I suppose your tech support would rather conceal the data related to thermal runways than offer users precise graphs of the temperatures over time.

3. 1/5Nothing special, and notifications need work

   Let’s be real, this app basically achieves the bare minimum expectations for a pellet grill app - you can see current temperature, change the set point, make some performance adjustments, and see cook data. There are some other features like a leaderboard and recipes that done hurt anything, but are relatively unnecessary in my opinion. But where this grill / app combo falls flat on its face is with notifications. Aside from some really basic notifications rules, this thing doesn’t really understand what it’s trying to tell you, when, or how often. Case in point, I’m currently in the middle of an overnight brisket cook on my flagship 1100, which I have uneventfully done several times before. Looking at the cook data, it’s been on target within a few degrees all night. I leave notifications on because I want to know if something truly critical happens that needs me to intervene. But this thing has been sending me a notification every 45 min for the last 8 hours to let me know that it’s preheated to 225. And I also know I’m going to get spammed when the probe starts to reach the target set point as well. At some point, the Recteq is going to have to recognize that it’s not enough to sell a great grill if the app that pairs with it is such a clunker.

4. 2/5Remote App suggestions

   These reviews should only be for the app, not the smoker. The app has improved recently by being more consistent and less hiccups to offering assisted cooks and more recipes. It still needs some work but it’s getting there. The biggest issue at the moment is the removal of the remote start. I asked the team why and learned: 1) they want to grow through big box stores and not just selling online anymore and this, they have to appease these companies to be more like the others…that’s pretty sad, because what makes us stronger is our differences! 2) biggest concern is if someone accidentally pushes the on button and starts the smoker while the cover is on. It was stated as a child using the phone and accidentally pushing the button. My rebuttal and suggestion - to me, these two reasons are cop outs and completely ridiculous to eliminate a feature all together. There was a similar issue with kids accidentally dialing 911 on phones, but they seemed to figure out a solve for it and this should be no different. Recteq changed the way we turn the smoker off remotely by holding the button down for a few seconds. Why can’t that also be the case to turn it on? That way it’s not accidental anymore and it is fully deliberate. To go a step further, after holding down, provide a message box that asks if we really do want to turn on the smoker and we select yes or no accordingly. Another option is to do what I mentioned earlier for the 911 calls and create a slider for the on button. Lastly, instead of removing the feature, provide legal verbiage to those who want it and consent check box so that going forward we can make that decision and if we have a problem, it’s not on recteq. I just provided four solutions. Fix this feature immediately with at least one of these.

5. 1/5Well it’s been years and not really any better despite updates

   Recently update removed features, remote turn on was a primary factor for using the app, now gone under “industry standard language”, there is no industry standard, you are concerned about lawsuits. We are adults, with remote entry on the house, garage, remotely starting cars and remotely logging into banks safely for decades. A better way would be to require two factor authorization for remote turn on if recteq is so nervous about lawsuits. I have had the grill for quite a while and have used the app for all cooks. Generally the data provided is limited to the basic graphic. Never any zooming in on temperature axis of the graph or rescaling, no custom colors, no show/hide temperatures or probes. No drag on the graph for an intersection just an inaccurate tap. Limited history kept, last update erased all of my historical cooks and notes. The current setup decoupled the cook graph from the cook and didn’t say anything so I didn’t have my cook data on my last cook. No secondary data, time to preheat, time to set temp, fluctuation range. If your geeky about grills and cooks you want your data and want to have options on how it’s displayed.
