4/5First impressions
I’ve had my 1250 pit boss for almost two months now and it’s my first one. Here’s my experience. Follow the directions closely, especially on shut down. I find that if you have temperature very high it’s best to lower the temperature to around 250 and when it reaches that point put it in shut down mode and you won’t have to worry about back burn. These have a hot spot because of the searing grade. If you cover that area with water trays and cook on the second rack the hot spot is cut down tremendously. Over all I’m very happy with it. It takes some learning but that’s half the fun. My only complaint is the hopper gets dead spots where the pellets won’t fall down and you have to poke it ever few hours to get the pellets to fall. This could be a big factor for an over night cook. I plan to reach out to pit boss because mine came with from what I can tell the old style hoper not the one displayed in the store. If I get this replaced and it solves the issue I will report back.

5/5Lexington Upgrade
I’ve had the Lexington for a couple months. The grill has been excellent. Everything I’ve cooked on it has been delicious. Decided I liked the idea of being connected so i ordered the connected upgrade. Got the connected controller last week but today was the first chance to install it. My hands were too big to get to the top so i ended up just taking the hopper off the grill, in five minutes installed. Powered up. Nothing. Wouldn’t connect to phone. Called tech support and he was very helpful. Emailed me a troubleshooting guide. Unfortunately they didnt help. Decided to try deleting the App and reinstalling. Bluetooth and wifi picked it up immediately. Put the grill through several paced, temp up, temp down, timer, etc. walked around the yard, across the street , throughout the house. Worked like a charm. I’m so impressed with this little smoker, the only thing is as i get used to using it i want to use it for everything and it’s a bit small so yesterday my wife bought me a Savannah Onyx for my birthday. Just burned it in and haven’t had an opportunity to use it yet. I’m sure it’ll be just as good as the Lexington. Now i have two pit boss, the Lexington for when it’s just the wife and I and the Savannah when the kids and grandkids and friends are over.

3/5Account login to access local smoker?!
I’m a hobby smoker. I have really enjoyed the pellet grill itself, but this app leaves a lot to be desired. First, the fact that the app will randomly disconnect mid smoke, so I have a sessions started that is only 10 minutes, then a 12 hr session, then a 2 hr session, but all for the same smoke so I can’t accurately gather the data for the session is bizarre. But what really got me is today. I spatchcock and smoke two turkeys for thanksgiving. Doing this on the pellet grill results in insanely juicy turkeys and frees my stove for other items. It makes the day so much easier. Today I fire up the grill, load the turkeys, and go to open my app to watch the temps and set alarms. But first I have to sing in… and server error. Then I try again. Server error. I can’t access anything because I can’t sign in. I force close and try again… indefinite loading. Another time.. server error. So I have guests showing up in two hours and can’t use my smoker app to keep an eye on my turkeys. What really annoys me about this is that I am a software engineer. I have literally architected local/online hybrid systems and know what it takes. Allowing local grill access without login is a no brainer. Have I used the app? Yes, extensively over my two years of ownership. What do I think? Meh. I’m on the cusp of hacking a version that does what I need because this app is too frustrating.

1/5Garbage app
This is an absolute disgrace. The app is garbage that is extremely limited. It could not find my Bluetooth even from a foot away. Could not find my WiFi and then locked in an empty screen that takes forever to refresh and will not let you change. Tried deleting it and reloading and looking for any updates but still will not connect. The grill is good but one of the main reasons I got the Pit Boss was to use the WiFi feature. Why they stopped using an app that worked and changed to this garbage I have no idea. I will use the grill till it finally dies but will go with another brand next time that cares more about what their customers need. Update - Tried giving the PitBoss app one last chance after hearing they “fixed” the iPhone problems. Spoiler: they didn’t. The app is still a mess, and customer service somehow manages to be even worse than the software. They talked over me nonstop, didn’t listen to a word I said, promised to send random PDFs that never showed up, and kept pushing the same useless advice I had already tried. After following their instruction (removing and download again), the app now refuses to connect at all. So congratulations to them by making a bad situation worse. Do yourself a favor and buy from a brand that actually supports the product you paid for.

5/5Smoking made easier
Overall pit boss is an awesome brand to use. I run a wild game processing shop and I use 4 of their PBV5 models for all my smoked specialties. Their customer service is incredible, they helped me get one of my smokers back up within 3-4 days (snail mail) I’ve had for 2 seasons free of cost as it fell under warranty. The only criticism I have for their app, while yes it has really helped me increase productivity with the WiFi models taking some of the “work” off my hands, it could be a little better at notifications. Meaning if there were notifications to help track if the temp drops too far below the set temp, maybe a 15-20 degree drop before it cuts into ELR. I hadn’t paid attention to one of the hoppers and noticed some of the pellets were wet and degraded. So after a hour or so of normal temps it started to cool down when I thought everything was going well. Just some sort of alarm or notification I believe would make the app even better. Other than my little criticism for improvement, and error that I made, Pitboss is an awesome brand for smoking and the team is incredible.
