  1. 3/5Decent, but there’s much to be desired

First off, when I first downloaded the app I thought that the coach would be an actual person, and was a little disappointed that it’s an automated bot. However, I do like that it’s more personalized than other basic apps and actually takes into account my habits and averages so it doesn’t feel like I’m following a super basic pattern or plan. I don’t like how basic some of the features are, especially the food tracking. The input is very basic, which means there’s a LOT of room for error as far as ingredients and calories go. I know the point of the app is to not focus specifically on calorie counting, but when you’re actually trying to lose weight it’s vital that you track them to an extent, and it’s just not possible to do that with the current interface. I find myself doing the bare minimum food tracking with Lark, then going to another free fitness app to actually track my food and calories. Lastly, I think the “mindful check-ins” could be improved GREATLY by just including more options for answers rather than just good, ok, or not good. The options are way too vague to actually log and track my mood and to try to make improvements. If you’re looking to make changes by developing habits without tracking a ton of details or stats, this app is perfect. But if you’re trying to seriously follow a goal or lose a good amount of weight, you’re better off with a different app.

  2. 1/5Coach feature not working since Monday.

Update: Even with today’s update this app’s Mission Check in feature is still not working. This app says my last recorded check-in was July 22, despite my checking in and answering the questions DAILY. This is still very frustrating. This app requires daily check ins with the 26 Mission segments you must complete. For three days the Mission check in has been malfunctioning. Before any questions arise - I have checked and my app is updated, so that’s not the problem. As for the malfunction: The first day, I answered the questions 10 times. None of them were recorded. I occasionally got a “something is wrong” message, but I knew it was stuck in a loop because it kept giving me the same AI generated questions. Now, three days later, my progress is still not being recorded, despite receiving a message that says I have completed 7/7 check ins. The app says 5/7. I should be finished and onto the next Mission segment. This is unacceptable. Competing these segments is required to receive the “free” Fitbit they offer. Yet, it seems as if you will never be able to complete the requirement. At best, it will require a much longer commitment than the one they advertised/offered. The food selection for the meal database is very limited and that’s frustrating enough, but having me waste my time, growing frustrated by this app is certainly not contributing to “good health.” Nothing has been released by the app developers to help us understand why the failure.

  3. 5/5Highly Recommend

This is my first time using a health app. I decided to go for it when my insurance offered because I was making limited progress on my own and was discouraged. I’ve found Lark to be user friendly for entering meals, and I appreciate the immediate feedback about my choices. Lark is very positive and encouraging without fail which is something I need. I know I’m chatting with a “bot,” but the humans behind this program really understand the psychology of motivation, and they are both knowledgable and compassionate. And they are easy to teach when needed. I am learning a lot more than I thought I would. I have a FitBit synched to the app, and it is helping me have a more accurate assessment of my actual activity level and my sleep. One of my biggest new commitments in this program is getting adequate rest. I learned that being tired is probably my biggest trigger for unhealthy choices. Lark is also offering quite solid support for managing stress and being mindful. The daily link to helpful articles lets me go deeper into learning more about nutrition, movement, and also what is motivating and important to me. It’s very affirming. If anyone is on the fence, give this one a try. Thanks to the thoughtful folks who developed this app and are working to keep it relevant and current. Customer support is timely and helpful! High praise!

  4. 2/5Eh

When I first downloaded the app and enrolled in the DPP I thought it was a fairly decent app. That began to change quickly. While waiting the 12 days it took for my scale to arrive I discovered that there is no way to manually enter your weight. Eh, I can live with that, no big deal. Then, while continuing to use the app I have noticed that it is very “one size fits all”, and although there are a couple diet customizations it really isn’t very customizable. The info in the daily check-in activities is basic info that I learned in high school back in the mid-late 1990s. And the app tends to be slow to load even with the coaching responses set to “fastest”. Now that I’ve completed week 7, and should be receiving my email to order the Fitbit at the end of week 8 I started looking into how to sync the two. Turns out that they don’t sync, and steps need to be entered manually. Okay no big deal I can do that each nights as I’m heading to bed. So checking the FAQ to figure out how to do this I find that I do not have the option to add steps as the FAQ directs. So now, in finding heat while the Fitbit will be useful to me on its own this app is becoming less and less useful as I should be able to find another app that will be much easier to use that will sync. Plus, the “coaching” is such canned responses I find myself no really enjoying it. I responded to the question “What activities do you like that get your heart pumping?” With the answer of “nothing”, and the “coach” said “Great! Enjoy that wherever you please.”

  5. 3/5Good Concept Needs More Development

This app uses AI to help with weight management. It’s a great concept and has some good automated features. It automatically captures weight data every time I step on the scale. It begins with an automated chat feature, which is cool because you don’t have to deal with an actual person. Although, some of the question and answer sessions need a little work. Maybe test the app on someone that is actually trying to lose weight. Some of the questions and answers are a bit vague and add no value to an overweight person’s journey, such as mine. Regardless, I would suggest this app for anyone that is new to weight loss but not new to tech. The app developers just have a bit more work to do, as there are quite a few glitches. Oftentimes it logs off and when I try to log back in, it rejects my user and pass 3 or 4 times before accepting it. The days load very very slowly when trying to input meal tracking. I've given up on waiting several times with intentions of going back later. It also doesn’t seem to consistently pair well with fitness gear and other apps. These minor glitches would be very frustrating to someone new to tech and they may not understand things like “force quit” and “reboot”. These are archaic methods, but they work most of the time. Lark’s app has its shortcomings and because I am on contract for a year, I will keep using it. It does, however, add some value to my life as I understand that it is still a work in progress. I am looking forward to new features and development to make this experience even better.
