  1. 5/5Solid College Savings App

I like the app because I can get a clear quick view on how much we’re saving each year and what we’ll be deducting from our state taxes. I also like that I can increase the monthly deposits right from the app. It’s simple and intuitive. So many financial apps don’t nail that elegant simplicity and create friction and frustration instead, out of touch with the core functions users need and want. So kudos to the team who designed this app.

  2. 3/5Functional, but always can be improved for the investor

I’d like to see some more index fund options; Nasdaq 100, Russell 2000, etc. Perhaps even some 2x or 3x leveraged index funds. Also, it would be great to be able to see the daily change (increase/decrease) of the balance. Overall, many investment options are available, however options are too conservative for most education savings timeframe. Any savings with horizon of 5 years or more need to be invested in a pure stock fund, preferably a broad based index fund. Unfortunately, less than a handful of these fund options are available.

  3. 3/5Too buggy and incomplete information is displayed

    1) on the app or website: if you use UGIFT option for your grandparents or friend to put money as part of birthday or Christmas present, the system doesn’t show who the money comes from. It takes deposits up to several weeks to process. 2) the app does not allow you to withdraw money to send to school. You have to access it through a website. 3) on the app when you go to the beneficiary information page there is no option to go back to the main menu after that. The only option gives you is to close the account. 4) the app has very limited functionality as compared to the website.

  4. 1/5Illinois Bright Start

This app stinks. You can look at your portfolio totals, but that’s it. The moment you try to look at your profile to try to change personal information or a log in setting, it loses functionality. You can’t go back to see what you were looking at or actually change anything. I click remember me and it never does and I have to log in with my password every time rather than biometric login. Finally, even when looking at your portfolio it doesn’t give you the option to see what you return was in different months since the graph isn’t interactive it’s just a picture. These things aren’t hard to make happen, but the developers seem to be ignoring people’s criticisms for over a year.

  5. 3/5It's a 529 but could be better

It's a good way to put away money for your grandkids but investment options could be better and would also like a way to keep fdic insured cash in the account that could be invested at the exact time you want to invest it. Having cash withdrawn from your account, transferred to the 529 account, and finally invested in a fund you're not really even sure what the exact assets in the fund are, their past performance history, or the exact day from the time you initiated the electronic funds transfer the money actually gets invested could all be better. An option to just buy certificates of deposit might also appeal to some as a safe investment alternative.
