1. 2/5Downhill plummet

   I’ve been using this app to plan my school assignments for a literal decade! I started using it in middle school and I’m now in my senior year of college. It was amazing! But this last update made it so unusable that I switched to a different planner app (Power Planner). With the new update, it’s incredibly difficult to manage the subjects you’re taking unless they divide into nice English, Math, Science, History labels. You can’t view a task unless you go to the calendar, which defaults to showing the day instead of the week or month, and scroll to the day where you made the task due. If you’re trying to put in deadlines from a syllabus, this means you could be scrolling for literal months just to make sure you actually created the assignment. The tasks show up on the calendar like classes, making it really difficult to tell what’s actually a class and what’s a homework assignment. It’s super confusing to even create a task to begin with! In what world does it make sense to default to the creation of a class rather than a task? It genuinely goes class -> exam -> task. That’s the opposite of the order that would make sense to use most frequently! The tabs of the old app used to give you a nice, legible dashboard that told you what tasks were coming up. Now, it’s impossible to tell what the tasks even are or when they’re due. I’m incredibly disappointed in how much they ruined this app when it’s been functioning amazingly well for years!!

2. 1/5Evolving Backwards

   The recent overhaul of the app really isn’t that good. Before, it was the perfect app that I used to keep track of all my classes, hw, studying, exams, etc. for my college courses. I loved this app it really did help me stay in top of things and stay in honors. Now it’s a lot harder to manage and they added a paywall for personalization. The app is laggy, clunky, and hard to use now. To create a task now you have to click several buttons instead of one. When selecting options, even if you hit done, it continues to think you are typing in the text fields. You have to have a time on all tasks, and sometimes if you navigate to a later time at night to give you day to work on it, it automatically changes it to the next day. The spin wheel for the time is too low so I keep on swiping up out of the app. The completion drag bar is too wide so I can’t easily swip a task to 100% because then my phone case gets in the way. (It’s not a huge case at all). There are lots of these little things that have taken this once beloved app way down. I think one day it be good as it once was but unfortunately we are quite a ways away. I am not sure why they changed it, but I’m sad that they have made it so much harder to use now. I would love to help the developers get it back to where it was because, as I said above, this really did use to help me and I would be honored to get it back to where it was for other students (hs, college, or grad) to get as much out of it as I once did.

3. 2/5Avid User but Upset

   I’ve been an avid user of MyStudyLife for the past two years. It has been my absolute lifeline for college, as I love that I can access it on my PC or my phone, and it is great for tracking my class times/locations and assignments/exams. The new interface has significantly diminished my ability to effectively use this service. The PC interface in particular was butchered by the updated UI. I relied on using my PC to quickly log all of my tasks from my syllabi for the upcoming semester. The change that completely destroyed my ability to do this was the phone UI not being effectively integrated into a PC interface. I can still copy and paste my assignments quickly from my syllabi to a new task, but setting the date is literally impossible. The exclusive setting of dates via my mouses scroll wheel means I can only set a day, time, or any other numerical setting in increments of 3 (today is Sept. 2nd, I can only select Sept. 5th, Sept. 8th, and so on). I tried clicking to manually move the scroll-based date setting feature to no avail. While I understand this update might be novel, I think it makes sense that a change this large would be thoroughly tested and refined around the start of a new college semester. Using a computer is far more time efficient than a mobile device for entering hundreds of due dates/assignment names for a semester. Furthermore, the old UI still exists on another MyStudyLife website, which I only recently figured out no longer syncs with the app. I am not averse to change, but the blatant neglect of such a pivotal feature such as the web-based version of MyStudyLife is something which I cannot overlook.

4. 1/5New update not so great

   I usually don’t write reviews but I’ve been using this app for the last 3 years and absolutely loved it up until recently. I’d constantly recommend this to incoming freshman as a student ambassador and to friends etc However, I’ve been avoiding updating the app until my phone recently forced the update through because from what I saw before and using it the last few days the new update took an app that worked amazingly and tried to make it “better” by adding more unnecessary features (a lot behind a pay wall) and new interface that is no longer intuitive, and took away features that made the app so nice to use to keep track of classes and assignments. It’s difficult to find an app that understands simplicity is better for certain things and not everything needs to be “hi tech” or have a premium subscription version that adds stuff that really shouldn’t cost that much. And this was an app like that for so long where it understood the use of simple but effective design until now. I’m aware there’s a lot that goes behind these things and designs as I’m currently in a BFA program that specifically focuses on game designs which also includes apps so it’s not me just being old and grumpy about change or something. I also know that with this economy companies do need to make money to stay afloat, but at this point I would have preferred annoying ads if it meant getting to still use the old interface compared to this.

   Update 2: Things are still very rough/glitchy. You can’t change certain things once you create the class or assignment and the program overall is confusing and not running smoothly. Back to the saying, if it’s not broken, don’t try to fix it! I still don’t see why they had to switch to a new version when the old one was practically perfect. Don’t think I’ll be trying again for this school year because it this point it’s just a time waster. Update: Adding times is working now, going to try again. I still like the old version better and it seems they updated it just to add a paywall but at least all the features are working now. I’m going to try switching back as it’s the best task tracker that I’ve found! The team is very responsive to reviews and feedback which I appreciate. Original review: If it’s not broken, don’t fix it! New version is terrible, I loved this app since 2020 and am needing to find an alternative because the new version simply doesn’t work. The appeal is to see things in my phone and computer and the computer version doesn’t work anymore. It won’t let you pick dates for classes. So sad that they changed this right as I’m going into college and need to find a new system to keep track of assignments :(

   they say the ads are to keep it free, but I am constantly blocked by features that are only available by paying a monthly subscription fee. that is dishonest. I cannot even select my country without paying. I could tell them I am a university student, but when I add a subject I am forced to categorise it according, maths, English, science and basic high school subjects. where does Zulu or psychology fit into English and maths? please choose either ads or premium. This is far from accessible.
