1. 5/5AS824 Reliable and Stable

   I’ve been using the AS824 thermostat with my heat pump system since 2021, and it’s been a rock-solid upgrade from the old non-programmable “dumb” thermostat it replaced. That old unit was quick to trigger auxiliary heat anytime the temperature dropped, which led to unnecessary energy use and higher bills. The AS824 handles staging much more intelligently, keeping the system efficient even in colder weather. The app isn’t flashy—and that’s a plus. It’s clean, functional, and does exactly what it’s supposed to without bloated features or gimmicks. I’ve never had an update cause issues or disrupt performance, which is more than I can say for some other “smart” thermostats out there. One of my favorite features is the ability to use a remote sensor. My thermostat is located in a hallway with no vents, so it never gave an accurate read on the rooms I actually live in. With the remote sensor, I can prioritize the temperature in my bedroom—where I actually want comfort—and keep it steady throughout the night. It’s also worth noting that the AS824 was made by the same manufacturer as my HVAC system, so I know it’s built to integrate seamlessly. Since the upgrade, I’ve saved a noticeable amount on energy costs. No complaints here—just solid, efficient performance.

2. 2/5Incredibly Unreliable

   Edit: So horribly unreliable. Goes offline frequently. How can they not fix the problems with this app over all of this time? Frustrating…I wish i had other options, but I don’t feel like changing my thermostat. Original review: Occasionally works well, and it is a huge convenience to have. But it goes thru stretches where is has trouble connecting, and then other times, there seems to be very little correlation between the temperatures on the app and those on the thermostat. Well, being off by one degree is manageable, but being off by two degrees……kind of defeats the purpose. I still use it, but it can be really annoying. Edit: I updated my review to lower my ranking by one star because my connection problems have gotten worse. My internet works fine and i’m literally 5 feet away from the thermostat, but i’m getting constant “connection unavailable” messages. Edit: Months after my initial review, the same problems discussed above are worse than ever. Really frustrating. Also, pay attention to the reviews - many negative reviews show up as 5 stars. Something fishy going on here…..totally convinced the ratings here are completely bogus.

3. 5/5New App Doesn’t Always Work

   The new American Standard app doesn’t work as well. My system has been running all morning and yet the App says the compressor is not running. Well the backup heat is not running so how am I getting heat? The app should be modified to show separate indicators for when the compressor, aux heat (furnace) and the fan are each running. I would find that more useful especially when I am not at home. I would also like to see a better variety of colors used on the history graphs. Some of the colors are too similar and I can’t tell the difference. Agree with others that the Nexia app was more reliable.

   I’ve been very impressed with the American Standard Home app. It’s intuitive, easy to navigate, and creating automations is straightforward. Overall, it’s been a great experience. I do have a few suggestions that would make it even better: * Please display the temperature and humidity readings from the remote sensors. Since those sensors are already collecting the data, it would be extremely helpful for homeowners and HVAC professionals to see it. * Expand automation support with Apple HomeKit. Deeper HomeKit integration would add a lot of value for those of us invested in the Apple ecosystem. * Allow users to export runtime history as CSV files, similar to Ecobee. This data is incredibly valuable for analyzing system performance and can help HVAC professionals properly size replacement equipment. In many cases, long-term runtime data from an existing system provides insights that complement—and sometimes more accurately reflect real-world conditions than—a Manual J load calculation alone. Overall, this is an excellent app with a clean interface and easy-to-use automation features. A few additions like these would make it one of the best smart thermostat apps available.

5. 4/5Excellent human interface

   Our new American standard heat pump was expensive. However, the useability and quality are there. Both the app and wall mounted thermostat are intelligently designed and have a very short learning curve. After our new system was set up and linked to wifi, the technician explained how to program temperature settings. He left, and of course, I quickly forgot! But the app is intuitive enough that I soon had it figured out again and had it doing exactly what I wanted it to do. All remotely. It’s basically the ‘iPhone’ of smart thermostats: very intuitive and you quickly master its use. Well done.
