5/5Excellent cash flow management tool
Most budget programs are set it and forget it. Which is the problem: once you set it, you forget it and you drift away from your spending plan. The beauty of YNAB is that it is flexible and dynamic, and allows you to adjust your spending plan as you need to. I found the program itself is well designed, reliable, and easy to use. The only issues I’ve had were with banks making it hard to set up connectivity. But YNAB did a good job of communicating how they were working to resolve the issues. In the beginning it does take a few hours to set up categories and get banks connected, mainly because it is so customizable, but once it is set up it is virtually effortless to maintain. Do watch the tutorials first on how to set it up. But then I spend 1 to 3 minutes each morning reviewing the previous days expenditures, and maybe 10 minutes a month reconciling my accounts. It shows monthly and quarterly reports so I can see trends over time. The only tricky bit is understanding how YNAB budgets your credit card purchases. That is not intuitive the way the rest of the program is. But they produce tutorials that explain it well. The web platform is easiest to use for setting up your categories, and for reconciliation. But the phone app is essential for quickly checking your remaining budgets on the go, especially as you get close to your next payday. I highly recommend it for those who want to be in charge of their spending habits.

5/5Frustrated with Constant Design Updates
UPDATE: Thank you for your thoughtful response. Despite my frustrations, I still think this app is great. The customer service is fabulous, too. I’ve had several issues that needed resolving over the years, and the folks at YNAB have always been responsive and helpful! I do have one more item to suggest. On the budget/plan page, would it be possible to move the items in the top corners back to their original places? (3 dots menu to the upper left corner, editing plan/views to the upper right corner?) For the sake of muscle memory. I keep hitting the wrong button when trying to update categories lol. ———————————— ORIGINAL REVIEW: Venting some frustration here…I have absolutely enjoyed using this app since finding it in 2021, but for heaven’s sake can you please slow down with the user interface updates?! It feels that lately, as soon as we get used to a new design things change. Still a great tool, just frustrated with the constant design updates. The app is starting to feel visually cluttered. Not a fan of the new Home Screen. Is there an option to disable? Would prefer to open app and immediately see the budget. Red notifications now on home button, only shows “cover overspending” at top of budget, have to toggle to Home Screen to see “new transactions” would prefer to see all those at a glance on top of budget screen. Floating add transaction button adds visual clutter to the screen, looked much more clean at the bottom in the center where it used to be.

5/5The iPad app is way to kiddy
The app/methodology/paradigm(s) have really revolutionized the way I approach my own finances and i cannot recommend it enough from that regard as a service & function. I have budgeted myself for well over a decade and have done alright, but always felt there was some missing piece or rather a “hole” that seemed to be getting in my way. This app/way of tagging and budgeting really helped me see in a very adult way, the ways in which I was failing to connect some financial dots and keep myself from doing as well as I should have been; it made sense after I really pressed myself to drop my bad thinking that I had developed to try and work around the natural holes in a standard budget logic. Having said all of that, I find myself using my iPad Pro to access the web client, as the app itself is so kiddy and limited that it makes it actually harder to digest the information presented and make the most sense of it. So much information but it’s all so “big” that you can’t see the big picture, almost simply because the text and forms are so LARGE. Really the app could be and needs to be as feature-rich and dense as the web app; basically take the web app and adapt it to be touch targets and color coded like the app is. It could be so much BETTER than the web interface with all the screen real estate on the iPad and the easy entry and basic structure they have in place for it already. I really look forward to the iPad app “growing up.”

5/5Worth every penny!
I am shocked that I’ve stuck with this app, because usually I’m all ging ho on something new and then on the the next new thing. I’ve always had a relatively good handle on my money, but I then I had a few expenses pile up at once and had to borrow from my mom for a hot minute! I was determined not to do that again, and I ended up finding this app. I spend a few minutes categorizing transactions every morning, and a bit longer on the weekend assigning and reviewing the bigger picture. It has allowed me to start saving more for retirement (which I always talked about but never really implemented) and also put money aside for annual projects that I know are coming up. I’ve been able to pay for a $3K root canal and a $2K biopsy without it being a scramble. I’ve also realized that we shouldn’t be taking that trip to the February festival this year because even though there’s money in the bank, thats not what it should be used for until we have more saved up in that category. It’s everything I was looking for and so much more! I’ve been made aware of subscriptions I didn’t know I still had, double charges, and more that have more than paid for the annual subscription. It’s a way to look at finances that is a total mind shift, and brings such peace of mind. It’s a bit of a learning curve to set up, but there’s such a fantastic fb group and community ready to help and learn from. People say customer service is great, but I haven’t needed to use them. If you’re considering something like this, I cannot recommend it highly enough!

5/5A life changer
My husband and I were always arguing over money. I did the financial stuff, and he had no idea how much money we had at any given time, even when I showed him. He wasn’t involved enough to be able to judge anything well and he didn’t realize how much we were spending on credit, because it was all in different statements and I was tracking it in a spreadsheet on my Mac, which he couldn’t easily access from his PC. Plus, we didn’t have time to have long conversations about money every week. This app, combined with the entire YNAB online system, allowed us to plan monthly, and then adjust and track on the fly. With BOTH of us tracking and noting everything we did, we stopped getting into fights about how much money either of us was spending for personal stuff — we each had an equal budget for those. He stopped feeling like I was the Evil Financial Gatekeeper because he was completely involved in the whole process and saw why we couldn’t afford something he wanted. We didn’t panic as much about emergencies because we had far more ability to plan and budget for those in advance, in multiple ways. And we stopped scrambling to pay for annual items because we could easily set goals and save incrementally for those all year. I just had several unexpected car repairs, and because of YNAB’s system, I had the money to pay for them. I haven’t charged anything to credit cards for two years since getting YNAB. I love this app and am about to get it for my daughter to help her plan her college savings and expenses

This app has changed my entire life in the almost 3 years I'veused it, being used correctly with watching training videos and going to Crown Financial ministry- I have been able to save and change my entire life style with budgeting! It's worth it to pay for 1000%. It depends on YOUR discipline and will to budget. I look at it everyday, so it only works if you do. But its amazing, always accurate. I dont have any issues with the way it works. I truly love and am thankful for this service.

A bit hard to rate. Its good, but expensive as hell. Sure, the product is well made, but I feel the current price is milking it a bit too much. Would rather support a project like Actual Budget or similar where the money wont end up in a close sourced product that suddenly gets a big price hike, just to collect more cash. Totally understand why though. Money is money. With that said, if money isn't an issue for you, then YNAB is a valid contender.

You asked and now it's here! You can now add photos to your transactions. Snap a pic and attach it to the transaction so you always know where it is. Want to celebrate fully funding summer camp before you had to pay for it? Toss a photo of the kids on the transaction when you drop them off. Whether it's something important to keep track of or a moment worth celebrating, it's all right there in your plan.

We’re greasing the gears on processing transactions! Now, when either side of a transfer is approved, we'll auto-approve the counterpart, regardless of whether it's cleared. New imported inflow transactions will default to the Ready to Assign category if they import into a checking, savings, or cash account. And you can swipe to remove a category from a split transaction. Less friction, more flow—your transactions running like clockwork.

We've squashed some bugs and made a few improvements to make it easier than ever to get good at money. Notably: Current Goal just got more flexible! Categories with certain monthly, yearly, and custom targets now qualify, so it's easier to track the savings goal that matters most to you.

26.21
The transaction editor on iOS has a fresh new look that makes the type of transaction instantly clear, payments and transfers more intuitive, and imported credit card payment matching automatic. No more brain teasers—is this payment an inflow or outflow? Are transfers one or two transactions? Is anything even real? We can't answer all of life’s great mysteries, but hopefully this frees up some space so your brain is free for the questions that actually matter.
-
26.22
We’ve got a few more quietly satisfying upgrades to transaction entry this week! Inflows that import to checking, savings, or cash accounts already default to Ready to Assign. Now manually entered transactions will, too! We made the animation clearer so that when you record credit spending, the movement of money from your spending category to your Credit Card Payment category is even clearer. And splits in the new transaction editor got a little less fiddly: you can now add a transfer leg to a split with just one category, so things like a grocery run with a little cash back no longer need a throwaway placeholder.
-
26.23
When you enter a new transaction manually, the editor now opens fully expanded: cleared, flag, memo, and repeat all right there from the start. We also squashed a few bugs and made some improvements. Notably: - Fixed a bug where tapping Done in the memo field was inserting a line break instead of saving. Now it saves, regardless of where your cursor is. - Math in the amount field now calculates as soon as you move on—no need to tap the equal key first. - Covering overspending is faster and snappier! We tightened up the animation timing so you can move through multiple categories without waiting.

26.24
We’ve squashed some bugs and made a few improvements to make it easier than ever to get good at money. • The Add New Transaction shortcut can now pre-fill multiple split categories when opening the transaction editor. Your automation, even more automated. • If your bank connection runs into trouble and a reset is the fix, we’ll now prompt you to do it right in the app.

We've squashed some bugs and made a few improvements to make it easier than ever to get good at money. Notably: • Fair's fair: Apple subscribers can now earn referral bonus time for referring a friend, just like web and Google Play subscribers. • Transfers to a loan account with a paired category now show that category locked in from the start. • When your split total doesn't quite add up, you'll know right away! The alert now shows up just in time. • The Plan tab got way fancier under the hood. Same tab, snappier feel.

You can now access all tabs while using Hide Amounts, including Spending and Accounts.

Life is short, spend it well. Here's how we're helping you this week: - Share your referral link with a QR code! Pull it up in the Share Hub and let a friend scan it, no copying and pasting, or even contact info, required. - Tapping to change a transaction’s category no longer auto-opens the search field and keypad, so you can scroll and browse your categories before deciding if search is necessary. - Hit a net worth milestone? Tap the new Share Your Progress button in your Net Worth chart on the Reflect tab to download a shareable image and celebrate your win with your community. - Mobile now respects your payee's categorization settings. If you've turned off auto-categorization for a payee or set a default category on the web, mobile will follow those rules, too.

Life is short, spend it well. Here's how we're helping you this week: • Credit card payments now match to the correct card, even if your bank refers lovingly to all of them as AUTO-PAY THANK YOU. • We fixed a bug so that the credit card setup tutorial is just as easy to read when using zoom for accessibility.

Life is short, spend it well. Here’s how we’re helping you this week: • Auto-categorization is now smarter! A single, one-off recategorization won’t change a payee’s usual category. Instead, the default category will only change when 2 of the 3 most recent transactions agree on a different category.
