1. 5/5Simple utility app that works well. Please make available on AppleTV

   This app provides just a few features, but the features have worked well for me and the user-interface is fine. And it’s free, so there isn’t much to complain about! But it occurs to me that it would be useful if this app was also available for AppleTV. For one, many people have their AppleTV connected via wireless, so it’d be interesting to know how well the WiFi connection of *that* specific device was working. For two, the app notes that if you’re measuring the speed of transfers between two devices on your Wi-Fi, then the speed that it reports might be half-as-fast of the actual speed of the device that you initiate the test from. That’s because you’re measuring the connection-speed of *both* WiFi devices at the same time. For those of us who have an AppleTV hard-wired to our network, it’d be very useful to use that hard-wired device as the server that this app connects to.

2. 5/5Lots of Stats, Lots of Data to Improve Your Wifi

   This app does a great job of providing users with the data they need to optimize their wifi experience. It allows you to scan your environment to optimize your wifi and it also clocks what bands and channels you’re connected to, along with giving you helpful suggestions for tweaking those settings to get better network performance. If you also have Ubiquiti devices like cloud gateways or access points, you can also establish a tunnel back to your home network. The only thing is that sometimes the speed test results from the tests are not super accurate but they are more precise than the speeds you’d get from testing connection speeds on the internet. All in all, this app has been a helpful way to optimize your wifi experience and the UI is intuitive and easy to understand.

3. 3/5Works great if both your isp and cell carrier support IPv6

   I have no issues establishing a teleport tunnel while connected to a WiFi AP from my iPhone. However, if I’m out traveling and on T-Mobile service, the vpn profile for Wifiman shows it has both an rfc1918 ip address as well as an IPv6 address. Unfortunately, my ISP, Frontier doesn’t support IPV6 in my area. So the traffic just drops/fails as soon as I try to do anything with the tunnel. I’ve seen similar issues before with Cisco anyconnect on windows boxes with IPv6 enabled for the vpn tunnel interface. The tunnel doesn’t know how to route traffic, so it just fails. As a bandaid for the Cisco issue, our support desk team would disable IPv6 on the nic as a workaround. Unfortunately, for my iPhone, this doesn’t work. Others reported turning on IPv6 for their unifi router’s wan interface, for me, that won’t do any good as Frontier only assigns ipv4 addresses in my state. A simple fix might be a toggle to enable or disable IPv6 in the vpn settings, but alas, I’ll just need to tether my laptop to my phone when out and about. I

4. 1/5Only for 5-10 min sessions

   This app and the entire Teleport function is being sold as a consistent VPN option with a zero-configuration. What they don’t tell you is that it’s only useful for quick sessions. Ubiquiti intentionally designed this app to not have any background app refresh options within iOS settings. They intentionally do not allow this app to refresh in the background. This means the app stops sending keepalive requests to the gateway and then the carrier NAT expires UDP mapping and the VPN tunnel silently collapses. I can re-connect to get Teleport working for another 5-10 minutes. But unless and until Ubiquiti updates this WiFiman app with iOS background app refresh ability, it’s effectively just a bite-size VPN. Great if you have a file you need to grab from you LAN, but not designed to let you stay on your UniFi network for any length of time beyond that. WiFiman is a fun app to play around with and test things but it’s actually pretty bad at VPN functions. Pretty disappointing because that’s what I need it for the most. 1-star because these other diagnostic features are cool, but since I needed a stable VPN and WiFiman/Teleport wouldn’t deliver, WiFiman does lose nearly all value it could’ve had in my life. Hey, Ubiquiti, want an easy 5-star app? Enable background app refresh on iOS. Imagine having a stable ongoing VPN that needed no configs and was entirely native. Now THAT would be cool. You could do it. But you didn’t. And that choice earned you 1-star. Because nothing is more upsetting than enabling a VPN and then looking at my phone 15-mins later and realizing my phone still thinks I’m connected but that all packets fail between the gateway and my client device because Ubiquiti designed their client VPN app to stall unless kept in the foreground. Pretty poor implementation of what could be a cool feature.

5. 5/5Signal Mapper / Other Functions

   For those not seeing the signal mapper or possibly other functions. Yesterday I switched UDM Pro from the new interface to the original interface. By doing so, today I lost some functionality of WiFiman. Signal mapper was one of them. I realized that maybe the interface needs to be in the new interface along with the WiFiman toggle turned on. So, today I switched the UDM Pro back to the new interface making sure the WiFiman toggle was on. Still no full functionality to WiFiman. Then I did a restart of the UDM Pro. Now I have the full functionality of WiFiman.
