1. 4/5I almost love it, but…

   I’ve been using Speakly for several months now, and I like it. It’s ONE of my favorite language learning apps. I typically just stick to building my vocabulary each day since I do mix in other apps, but it offers a lot of different options and I add all the music suggestions to my library. However- there is one thing I cannot stand. The speaking questions where you have to form a sentence. Sometimes it’s fine, and other times it’s SO picky it’s impossible to get past the question. I’ll be stuck on it for days sometimes because it takes the most minuscule detail into account that no one but the app would notice. Sometimes I eventually have to just skip the question which is frustrating. I am learning Spanish, and my boyfriend is a native Spanish speaker and even he agrees it’s ridiculous sometimes. He’s always on me on my pronunciation, so I know it’s not just me or he would 100% tell me. Even he answers the questions for me and it says he’s incorrect. I really wish the app wasn’t so robotic and took different dialectics into account(for example, the app uses the Spanish lisp, whereas my boyfriend is Mexican so he doesn’t use it and neither do I). Again, I really like this app but this one problem is really frustrating to me.

2. 3/5Please add support for non-European languages

   I have really enjoyed using Speakly to brush up on my German, but I wish there were support for non-European languages. I would have given Speakly five stars if it supported any of the languages I would consider starting to learn, but that is unfortunately not the case. I am a bit disappointed that Speakly has lately prioritized adding Norwegian, with apparent plans to add Swedish. No offense to speakers of Norwegian or Swedish, but considering that there is already fairly broad coverage of European languages, and that highly popular non-European languages such as Mandarin Chinese and Japanese are still not supported, I would have hoped Speakly would choose to diversify a bit more. Mandarin and Japanese are spoken by hundreds of millions of people worldwide and are in high demand among language learners. Introducing non-European languages would make Speakly more diverse and culturally inclusive. It should not be so hard to find competent teachers, linguists, and voice actors to create quality materials for these languages, especially given the large number of Mandarin and Japanese speakers worldwide. Speakly already supports a non-Latin script with Cyrillic, so it seems it should not be such a huge challenge to add support for non-European scripts as well. I hope Speakly will consider adding non-European languages in the future to make the platform more inclusive and appealing to a wider audience.

3. 4/5Amazing App but with a few typos

   I love this app! It’s excellent at giving you what you need to improve, I love being able to practice grammar and even conversations on this app, which Duolingo doesn’t really have. I feel very confident that I will actually be able to master Spanish through this app (maybe French or Italian, and maybe even Russian or Finnish later). I REALLY wish they could add more languages (I also want to learn Farsi) Though the reason I have it 4 stars is that on the grammar practice section, it sometimes tells you that your correct answer is incorrect (it gives you the answer you put as correct, that’s how I know) and that your accent (I have more of a Latin American accent due to living in California) is incorrect since it seems as if it just has the Castilian Dialect. Though I say that if you’re looking for a language learning app that really helps, this is for you!

4. 5/5Very clearly made by people who speak many languages.

   I think this app has some unnecessary criticism left over from when it was just very early in development. This app is EXTREMELY well rounded as far as learning goes. I was so happy when I first started using this app, because I could immediately tell that it was made by polyglots. It’s the most complete package out there. (Minus native speaker interaction.) It’s only fundamental flaw is being very harsh to correct on the fill-in-the-blank questions; however, real writing and conversation is harsh too, so I see why it has value, but it’s frustrating. This app is designed in a very well organized way, although it does have a small learning curve. I have not used the free version yet, but I plan to once my trial runs out. Then I’ll edit this to a very comprehensive review. Also, the support team seems to be very responsive and I will give them an email of my first impression and what relatively simple features could be improved to make the experience much more fluid. It’s already good, but it could be great.

5. 3/5The good and the bad - A Beginners Opinion

   I have been studying language for only 5 months and just tried Speakly out with their premium version as I was sucked into the 40% discount they were offering if you signed up before actually using the program. Here are my thoughts. Tough on Beginners I will use this app to improve both my listening and my speaking. I am a beginner and am just about ready to complete the A1 level in French. Even after completing over 100 hours of private class learning plus 6 months of using Duolingo everyday many of the beginning dialog I have never heard. The placement test put me at a Intermediate 1 and when going back to the Beginning 1 level for the listening exercises there are still significant vocabulary I have never heard before. One of my biggest complaints is that slowing down the audio does not slow down the word pronunciation but instead makes it unintelligible. Cant Change Levels? Although I took the placement test and ended up in Intermediate 1, I decided I would like to use the application from the Beginning 1 level since there were so many words I didnt know. Although it seemed I could go and do some of the exercises in the lower levels, I have not found a way to manually select my level. Will I use it? YES! Although I have reservations I will still try and use this app everyday to improve my pronunciation and listening skills. My recommendation Take advantage of the free 7 day trial before buying. I will get my moneys worth with my purchase but it just isnt as good (yet) then it can be.
