1. 4/5Not as bad as ratings suggest

   With a 1000XM2, I’ve had no big problems with the app. The interface is nice looking and easy to navigate, and I’ve encountered no crashing or bugs with the interface when it connects to my headphones. However, I do have problems with the app failing to connect with my headphones all the time; sometimes it freezes on the connect screen, but restarting the app solves it 99% of the time. Although one time it didn’t connect even after a restart, turning the headphones off/on did solve this. A problem I have with the app is that it has to connect every time you go go back to it, which is a 5 second process that is frustrating to sit through when you’re constantly going back to the app to adjust an EQ. This is slightly more frustrating when it not-uncommonly freezes on the connect screen and I have to restart the app. It would be great if the app stayed connected in the background for just a minute after you switch away from it. The EQ function of the app is wonderful, but you are limited to six frequency sliders to adjust. If an update were to add more frequency sliders (maybe up to ten instead of six), it would make this app perfect.

2. 2/5Missing the mark

   I hate that when I open the app, most of the screen is filled with an image of the headphones I’m wearing. I have never opened the app to find out what my headphones look like or what the model number is. Put that info elsewhere. What I do want when I open the app, the overwhelming majority of the time, is to access the equalizer and/or the connected devices. It’s obnoxious that I have to scroll for that, when it could easily fit on my screen direct from clicking to open the app if there wasn’t a giant image of the expensive headphones I already own taking up all the space. In fact, the only button on my screen without scrolling is a feature I can control with a physical button on the headphones! Put it elsewhere, or let me re-arrange the features. I could also rant about the other weird choices regarding how the app is organized, but I’d rather focus on what’s explicitly irritating — like not being able to switch between the two devices the headphones can connect to. The only way to switch is for the current device playing sound to completely stop. So if I’m playing a game on my laptop, walk away, and my phone rings — there’s no way to answer my phone without running back and closing the game I was playing or disconnecting the bluetooth connection to my laptop and having the game audio blast out of it, while I try to answer my phone. Why can’t I just switch devices from the app?? I honestly sometimes feel this app was made via an AI prompt or something. Terrible interface.

3. 2/53 key flaws and one is a nuisance

   This app is fine. It does what it is supposed to for the most part but there are a few issues and one is a near constant nuisance. Firstly, and least impactful, I don’t want this app to sell me anything because I already bought at least one product or I wouldn’t be there to begin with so it is annoying but not unusual that Sony would use my presence as an opportunity to shill their portfolio of related devices and services. Secondly, it is disappointing that the custom EQ setup is literally subjective instead of being remotely scientific. This is a good opportunity to perform an empirical hearing analysis but instead the user is basically asked what genre and vibe they are most interested in. Finally, and this is the biggest gripe I have, it’s great that you can connect to 2 devices at a time. It works well once connects BUT if you need to switch secondary devices (from a TV to a laptop for instance), you can’t just tap on another device in your list of paired options. Instead you will get an error telling you that you must first disconnect from the device you are presently connected to and THEN you can connect to a new one. Apps for headphones from other manufacturers (Sennheiser for instance) do this seamlessly; when you tap on a different device, you get disconnected from the current device and reconnected to the new one without any further discussion. I have to switch secondary devices on a regular basis throughout the day and this runaround makes it an unnecessary PITA. Do better.

4. 2/5Annoying Speak to Chat & Ambient Sound Features

   The new version of this software (as of Oct. 2024) is very frustrating. The previous version permitted speak to chat function to be turned off permanently. However, this version still recognizes ambient sound and speech when speak to chat is turned off and only permits the user to have low sound sensitivity at best. There is not option to have no sound sensitivity. Please develop the app to permit complete turn off of speak to chat and voice/sound recognition. In public transportation there are so many loud announcements that even with complete noise canceling I can hear them clearly. Imagine the headphones turning ambient sound on every 2 min in public transportation. In addition, this feature makes it very difficult to record music when singing with click track coming through the headphones. Finally, when I have these headphones on and walk or run outside during my daily exercises, the speak to chat or sound/voice recognition gets activated and noise canceling gets turned off. In my opinion, these are consequences of poor app design. I am not clear on what purpose ambient sound detection and speak to chat functions serve when I can hear everything in my surroundings comfortably with Sony’s noise canceling function. After all, Sony does not have the highest noise canceling ability. However, it has a great sound system and I would like to continue using these headphones without having to replace them with Bose or other noise canceling headphones which are not superior in sound but extraordinary in noise canceling with no annoying speech/sound recognition features.

5. 4/5Good but some things are annoying

   I like how you can adjust the sound to taste, but I dislike that my headphones randomly go on transparency mode when I want to be on ANC. And yes, I have tapped the setting off to make sure it doesn’t happen, yet it still does. I’d rather manually turn it on. Additionally, sometimes, on the left ear cup the mechanics literally just stop working. There’s no response at all, it’s almost like the headphone is dead so I have to turn it off and on. Also, the headphones are still kind of bad at switching from device to device. Even if I switch one on pause on something im listening to listen to smth else on another, it literally just doesn’t switch. Mind you, I’ve only had these for a little over a year (Sony xm6) and and xm5s developed the same problem before they broke (like everyone else’s did). I still love the sound quality and ANC but for the price, I would think these small issues would be fixed and not become a problem only after a year of use. In fact, I had these issues for a few months ago as well so it’s even less than a year.
