1. 5/5Simple, Yet Just What I Needed

   This is a super simple app, but it does the job. It connects well with my Apple Watch and I can see my stats on my iPhone easily. While it’s off by a little bit from my rowing machine on stats, it’s not off by a ton and it doesn’t bother me. It counts towards Apple Fitness for the exercise ring on the Apple Watch, which is super nice! Love the dark themed UI! I will say, as a visually impaired user, it’s quite difficult to see the indicators for each number such as mi and SPM, but I’m learning to memorize where each number is since those are large and easy to see.

2. 5/5Does the job well

   I’ve been using this app for 3 years now and have logged 688 hrs on it, mostly on the water. I use it with an Apple Watch and iPhone X. It tracks my distance, time & strokes accurately. My only complaint was that sometimes it would take a minute to pinpoint my starting location via GPS, which would make it look like I’d started rowing in the road, about a mile from the starting dock. I have worked around this by starting my row in the app while I'm on the dock but a couple minutes before I enter my boat, then ending that short “row” and starting a new session when I actually start rowing. The first session seems to give the app time to pinpoint my location. I later go back and delete the “false” 2-minute workout, and the real workout shows the proper starting location on the map.

3. 1/5Still not good for indoor rowers

   I’d love to know what I’m doing wrong, or what the Apple Watch has against rowing as an exercise, because using this app in particular and the Apple Watch in general for indoor rowing is becoming an exercise in stress management. This app is OK, when it works. I have an inexpensive indoor rower with no bells or whistles, but it works and keeps count of my strokes. I wish it had app connectivity but oh well. I gave this app a try, and during the trial period it was decent. Off by a few SPM but better than nothing. So, I decided for the subscription. That’s when things got fun. Sometimes, there would be a great big 0 next to SPM for the entire workout. Other times, I’d be keeping a pace around 30 and would see the count fluctuate from 32 down to 20. And for the distance and 500 splits, well, they were all over the place too. I was told to wear my watch differently. I wear it the same way I always wear it, and that way works perfectly fine for every other form of exercise I do. And as for exercise, the watch doesn’t always count my time rowing properly. It will monitor my heart rate for the 30-35 minutes I’m rowing, but my time exercising has been anywhere from 1 to 24 minutes counted. Oddly enough, it does the same if I use the built-in row option on the watch. As an experiment, I chose “other”, and literally sat for 30 minutes. That counted, but my rowing didn’t. Gunther has been somewhat responsive to emails. But a link to refund is worthless after six months. And nothing’s gotten better after this most recent update. I’m stuck with a few more months of this subscription and then I’m done with this app.

4. 3/5Doesn’t save distance

   I was under the impression that this app would save the estimated indoor rowing distance to my Activity app, but it didn’t. At the end of my test workout, the RowingCoach app on my Apple Watch showed 1.6 miles. Great! I thought. I saved the workout but, alas, only time and calories were saved ... distance wasn’t. I always try to achieve the monthly goals that my watch sets for me, and often these goals are based on achieving a certain number of miles. That’s why I wanted my estimated mileage recorded. I’ll have to go back to using the meter on my Waterrower, not wearing the watch while I’m rowing, and then manually recording time, calories and distance thru the Apple Health app. Alas this won’t be an accurate calorie count!

5. 3/5SPM seems off.

   Sadly, my new FDF fluidrower doesn’t connect to anything, so this app was my answer to log workouts into Strava. The ability to manually edit distance for an indoor row is fantastic (still wont import the distance into Strava though. It just shows up as an “activity” with time and heart rate.” I’ve noticed, however, that the SPM has been way off as of late. I’m moving deliberately and my Apple Watch is recording the row, but end of workout it said in 8,000 meters I took 579 strokes at 19spm... when in fact I was averaging 28spm (manually counted for two minutes even)... which is more like 840 strokes. 19 SPM would be PAINFULLY slow... Is there a way to recalibrate the app on my watch? I’m not moving subtlety and the back & forth of indoor strokes should be an easy thing to keep accurate with the accelerometer.
