  1. 5/5Great intro so far

New to rowing. This has been a great intro. Was a little confusing connecting the asensei app, the rower, the erglog, and apple health, but that is probably on me and the apple universe more than the app. And eventually, when you have it set up, the app even reminds you to just hit connect on the ergrower and everything syncs up easily. My daughter even has a separate account that tracks her now. Assuming i could even find a gym with an ergrower (with pm5) and easily continue on the app, connecting to that gym rower. The lessons/workouts are sequential, and I love how it processes your performance from a previous workout (or part of the workout) and then benchmarks you for pushing yourself on the next workout/part. The screen layout and metrics are easy and intuitive. Nice that it flashes/highlights a metric when you are behind or ahead the intended workout pace. Also, being reminded of form (either by watching the coach on the rower, or verbally from the app) is super helpful. A push with the legs is worth so much more than a pull with the arms. I’ve only rowed so far with he intro program and coach Eric, but look forward to more. And so far no paywall; though surely this app pays for itself somehow, so I’m assuming it will start asking me for some payment or upgrades for access to higher level stuff at some point. My only desire is that it would be awesome to have music that had a cadence that matched the desired stroke rate. Tricky to do, I know, but with modern tech…wouldn’t it be nice.

  2. 5/5Terrific coaching, super high quality

I’ve had a Concept 2 tower in my basement for about a year, and while I’ve had fun hacking around on it, I knew there was more to rowing than my clumsy efforts. I just didn’t know how I would learn. As a former division 1 athlete (in a field sport, not in rowing!), I am used to being coached and am motivated by feedback and improvement. I was skeptical that an app could provide the coaching and feedback necessary for true form mastery (that might be an overstatement at this point, but I am getting there!) and performance improvement, but Asensei truly makes it happen. I am so impressed and delighted. Watching Eric through the workouts makes it easy to mimic good form and figure out where I have hang ups. He is a wonderful mix of low pressure and high motivation. This is truly an excellent stand-in for having an actual coach and an actual team to train with. It has made me want to try this out on the water! Thanks so much for delivering such a high quality experience.

  3. 5/5Outstanding rowing app

With gyms closed in my area due to the pandemic, I decided to buy a Concept2 rower in order to stay in shape. I decided to try out asensei and was blown away with the quality of the intro workouts that I immediately purchased the lifetime membership along with Eric Murray’s rowing program. I’m a former NCAA Division 2 swimmer and water polo player and the workouts challenge me every time I strap into the rower. The coaching feedback that the app gives you while you row is perfect for helping improve your technique. I use the app on my iPad (I bought a separate iPad mount); having the display unchanged between iPhone and iPad is another quality feature. The developers are very quick to reply to any reported bug or problem. A couple improvements I would like to see in future updates is seeing your goal stroke rate and goal pace displayed above your current stroke rate and pace regardless of whether you’re meeting your goal or not. Right now it only displays if you’re not at the goal stroke rate or slower than goal pace. I’d also like to see asensei “control” the Concept2 PM5 monitor so that the PM5 mirrors asensei as much as possible (for example: having the PM5 pace boat display match the goal pace asensei sets for you, having the PM5 display your interval and rest periods during those workouts). I’ve recommended this app to all of my friends who use a rowing machine or are considering getting one. I hope that a co-op workout feature is added in the near future.

  4. 5/5Motivating!

Two years ago, my husband and I bought a rower as our Christmas gift to one another. I used it faithfully for about a month and then didn’t really use it again until late the next summer when my two young boys cleaned my clock climbing our local mountain. Determined to get in shape after years of chasing after little kids and not exercising, I returned to the rower. It wasn’t until I heard about and started using asensei though that I truly started using the rower in the best way. As a mom of those two little boys who works and has a small farm, I don’t have the mental energy to design a workout plan. Asensei does that for me. The coaching is great! I love all the options and access to multiple coaches. This is the only exercise plan I have ever stuck with. I am set to hit my million meter mark just after the new year. I think asensei is definitely worth the price and their customer service is awesome!

  5. 3/5UI needs more work; overall seems promising

My initial review for this app in less than 30 mins of opening it was: “The UI of the app doesn’t cater to situations where I stop a video in between and want to come back to it. I started with the first video itself - in 30 seconds I realized I needed to position the phone better in front of the rowing machine, so I chose “stop” on the video thinking that I’d come back to it.” As I played with the app more, I realized that the landscape mode didn’t show all the menu options on screen. Swipe more etc and you’ll get to “workouts”. The UI assumed that the user would be familiar with available options when they go to first video. Also a nit: “+” is usually seen as a symbol to “add” something, not to bring up menu (like in the app). Anyways, the app’s offering looks promising overall. I have seen 2 introductory videos yet, and also happened to read their comments in the c2forum. The company seems committed to making good coaching accessible.

  • 1.14.1

Small improvements in this release: KAIZEN Concept 2 Logbook integration improvements which should prevent the appearance of negative rest distances and times in the logbook. These issues can occur when the PM5 is reset during a workout, including when the user programs it manually (which we don't recommend). Bluetooth timeout at the time of disconnect/reconnect increased to try and make this more robust and better logging added to debug. (APP)AREL Under the hood changes for Personal Coaching + (app)arel users to improve movement recognition.

  • 1.14.2

KAIZEN - Small changes in the spirit of continuous improvement Urgent bugfix to deal with a bluetooth-related problem that can cause workouts to be tracked incorrectly.

  • 1.14.3

(RE)CONNECT We've added some code to make Bluetooth reconnection more robust. Disconnects happen, mostly out of the app control, this feature should ensure that reconnection is more reliable so that you can continue your workout and have asensei track it fully. SKIP A SESSION If you are following a program and asensei keeps recommending you a workout you really don't want to do you can now choose to skip it and not be asked to return to it. When asensei asks if you are Ready to practice, choose Maybe later, then No, Skip workout in the Up Next conversation to skip a session. WORKOUT PLANNERS If you wish to find out more about the workouts in a program you can as we are adding links to the program planners from within the app. To view a planner hit Hey asensei [+] button, then choose Workouts and tap on the program you wish to view. The link to the planner will be in the top right. Not all programs have planners available yet, but we'll be rolling these out over time. KAIZEN - CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT We've addressed some rare issues that can lead to crashes when skipping segments in workouts.

  • 1.14.4

KAIZEN - CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT This minor release is designed to improve your workout stability. Featuring a more robust recovery from Bluetooth disconnection events and better error handling for skipping of segments during a workout.

  • 1.14.5

MAKING IT EASIER TO LOGIN For athletes using Facebook to login the asensei app now supports use of the Facebook app to sign you in. This means athletes using facebook to login will be redirected to the facebook app at the time of login, rather than to a web browser pop-up.

  • 1.15.0

IMPROVING ACCURACY We've improved support for our connected (APP)AREL - guides the user to achieve better calibration. KAIZEN - CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT Under the hood improvements and bug fixes.

  • 1.16.0

WORKOUT ON MORE DEVICES, WITH MORE CONTROL * You can now workout with the popular WaterRower and FluidRower rowing machines, as well as Concept 2 rowergs. WaterRowers require an S4 Monitor and a Bluetooth ComModule, FluidRowers need a Bluetooth console and Concept 2 machines need a PM5 monitor. * Manually reset your goals. If your circumstances change, if you've been out injured or off the erg for a while, or you just want to start afresh, you can ask asensei to start learning from scratch. Your workout history remains safely intact so you will always have a record of your performances. * Take your goal setting data with you across multiple iOS devices - when you login to a new device your goals now come with you. Note: workout data that can be retrieved is limited to those saved with the new version of the app so results may vary across devices at first. EASIER TO FIND YOUR WORKOUTS * The Up Next screen now displays the program that your workout is from. * Programs are listed in a consistent order to make it easier to find your workouts. * Free trial programs are no longer shown in the program list when you are a member. KAIZEN, CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT * Fixed a bug that could allow accidental re-connection to other rowing machines in the vicinity * The asensei challenge now works correctly with WaterRower and FluidRower machines

  • 1.17.0

SHARE MORE The post-workout sharing screen data is now more consistent with the entries in the Concept 2 Logbook. The first workout stats card now displays only the 'active rowing' part of the workout and doesn't include rests, warmups or cooldowns. This means it reflects the 'performance' part of your workout rather than the overall session. This is consistent with the Concept 2 workout summary. Details below: * TIME - duration of your rowing during the active rowing part of a workout * AVE SPLIT TIME - your average split time during the active rowing part of a workout * DISTANCE (M) - distance rowed during the active rowing part of a workout * CALORIES - calories burned during the active rowing part of your workout. Overall session details are still captured and broken out on a second stats card. * OVERALL TIME is the total duration rowed in the workout, including active rowing and rowing during rest periods, warmups and cooldowns. * OVERALL DISTANCE is the total distance rowed in the workout, including active rowing and rowing during rest periods, warmups and cooldowns. * REST TIME - is the time rowed during your workout, but excluding the active rowing - so this is your time spent in warmups, cooldowns and rowing in rest periods. * REST DISTANCE - is the distance rowed during your workout, but excluding the active rowing - so this is your time spent in warmups, cooldowns and rowing in rest periods. A third stats card shows some additional stats for your session. These are for the active rowing part of the workout only, not for the rests, warmups or cooldowns. * AVERAGE STROKE RATE * STROKE COUNT * CALORIES PER HOUR * AVERAGE WATTS A 4th stats card is similar to the first stats card, showing details of the active rowing, but displays drag factor instead of calories. Note that you may still see some discrepancies between the data shown on these cards and the PM5 since asensei does not reset the PM5 at the start or the end of a workout session. asensei does not capture any meters/time rowed outside a workout, even if the app is open.

  • 1.17.1

KAIZEN - CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT Minor update; contains an under the hood improvement for the capturing of force curve data.

  • 1.17.2

KAIZEN - CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT This update fixes an issue seen in release 1.17.1 where for iOS 15 users the on-screen display would not change to red correctly when you were off target with your SPM or split time.

  • 1.17.3

KAIZEN - CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT This update fixes an issue seen from 1.17.0 onwards where strokes were not counted correctly in the post-workout sharing cards and in the C2 logbook.

  • 1.17.4

KAIZEN - CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT Fixes a logging issue that affects some FTMS rowing machines.

  • 1.17.5

MAKING SHARING BETTER New post-workout sharing cards added: 1. interval breakdown - only appears when the workout has more than one interval. 2. a card including the workout description has been added - also shows the active rowing stats. KAIZEN - CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT Under the hood changes to allow additional data to be captured and displayed in the workout summaries. Athletes will notice no difference at this time.

  • 1.18.0

BETTER WORKOUT SUMMARIES The workout summaries now include the same 'sharing' cards as you see immediately after a workout. These allow you to see the workout stats at a glance, and you can share them from here at your leisure too. The share cards that show the interval breakdown should now display the exact value of the interval (e.g. a 30s interval will show as 30s rather than 30.1s as it sometimes did previously). This will also apply to the data shared with the concept 2 Logbook. ENABLING (APP)AREL UPDATES The asensei app can now see and update the firmware on the latest versions of the asensei (app)arel.

  • 1.19.0

FIND A WORKOUT We've added a workout search feature to the asensei app. Search by duration, coach, or using a key word (want a pyramid workout or ladder workout? no problem). You can also sort the workouts you find by duration. Choose Workouts from the Hey asensei [+] menu, then hit the search icon in the top left. IF YOU GOTTA GO... We'll be sad to see you go, but we now support account deletion requests from within the asensei app (on the My asensei page).

  • 1.19.1

SET BETTER GOALS, GET BETTER OUTCOMES Changes to improve goal setting consistency and eliminate some (rare) errors. Ensure that asensei sets you even better targets. STAY UP TO DATE This release includes changes for better iOS16 compatibility.

  • 1.19.2

KAIZEN - CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT Contains a fix for a bug which meant that the feed.fm music was not appearing in Control Center the first time a workout was run, meaning songs could not be skipped/paused etc. Behind the scenes changes to try and help track down very rare stability issues.

  • 1.19.3

Minor release to fix an issue whereby calories were always being shown as zero in workout summaries and in Apple Health.

  • 1.20.0

We say sayonara, or farewell, to the Hey asensei [+] button in this update. Some of you loved it, some of you hated it, and some of you never even figured out it was there! You can now find the main menu for asensei in the top right of the Up Next screen - we think this is more intuitive and works better in both portrait and landscape mode. If you are looking for your Workout History that's now located under the menu item JOURNAL. We chose the name Journal because we want to bring you much more here in future - more post-workout stats and insights - watch this space! For now you'll find the usual list of workouts you have performed and can still tap into them to see more performance insights. Your programs and workouts can be found via the PROGRAMS menu item and settings are in the MY ASENSEI area. SUPPORT is located at the foot of the new menu. We're planning further enhancements to the asensei rowing user experience in the coming months - it's all aimed at making asensei more enjoyable to use. Tell us what you like, don't like and would like us to improve via [email protected]! KAIZEN - CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT A bug that meant feed.fm music (our default option) would not play correctly on iOS17 has been addressed. UP NEXT SCREEN REFRESH Up Next screen menu changes: * The menu button (three horizontal lines) in the top right replaces the Hey asensei [+] button in the bottom left. * The JOURNAL menu item replaces the Workout History button (more insights will be added to this section over time). Up Next screen visual refresh: * Exercise name, coach name and program name now in cyan. OTHER CHANGES Tips and conversations updated to reflect the new menu structure. Lots of helpdesk articles updated, but if you spot any we've missed let us know via [email protected]

  • 1.20.1

IPAD HEALTH SUPPORT We've added support for Apple Health on iPads (it's been there for a long time on iPhones). On an iPad you will now see the option to connect to Apple Health on the menu > MY ASENSEI screen. You will need to have a recent build of iPadOS that supports the Apple Health app. KAIZEN - CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT Minor changes to the appearance of the JOURNAL screen.
