  1. 5/5My Grandmother’s UI

I recently joined an employer that uses Principal for their 401k. I’m coming from another investor that has a highly functional and well done UI, where I can (and did) literally everything from the app. Sadly, Principal has the worst UI I’ve ever seen. It lags, it takes so long to open a link I usually forget what I came to do. I literally hate this app. I don’t think it’s meant for users of the age that really leverage their phones/apps to interact with their portfolios. This is the kind of app that my grandmother would use, which means not at all. I think they have this app just to say they have one, but clearly have invested nothing in the UX.

  2. 1/5Poor Service

Last October 30th 2024 i borrowed money from this company and the lady who helped me told me that i am all set up and will get my money within 3 business days. To my surprise it’s been more than 3 days and it was still counting to this moment that im making this review exactly 11 days right now i still didn’t have my money. I reached out to you guys 3 times just to finally know that after borrowing money from principal i have to call Wells Thomas who is the third party to atleast ask them for updates with regards to my loan which this Wells Thomas are one of the company who also are not doing their job “Well”! They should not be in this business coz principl and Wells Thomas don’t have the heart in really helping people. Shame on you people!! Communication should be the one in your service. Don’t expect people like me who’s in need to know what to do next after borrowing from our hard earned money that was entrusted to Principal. I just wish my company would find another company that would help employees like me in times of needs. Take note i was already due for my payments, my birthday came without money, and until now money is still not in my bank. All in all next time you gonna borrow money wait for roughly 15 days for you fund to come. Shame on you people!!!

  3. 2/5Why are all medical apps so, so terrible?

I don’t understand how these medical insurance companies don’t have the ability to develop apps that are actually useful. If you are trying to find dental care with this app, good luck. It’s probably one of the worst that I have ever used. The search function is really wonky and difficult to use, not to mention the availability of dentists that take this insurance is incredibly limited. When I do find one like 20 miles away, and I go off the app to check their reviews and ratings, not only are ALL of them rated three stars and under, but if I take more than one minute to locate the practice and check them out online before making an appointment, I’m logged out of the app “for my privacy”. It’s already such a pain trying to find appropriate care, this app is making it infinitely harder than it needs to be. It’s gotta to be my sixth or seventh time having to log back in this morning going back-and-forth to check out different dental providers. There should be an option to keep you logged in, by your own choice - not by the app deciding you’ve been away too long because you take a minute to check someone out on Yelp. Ridic.

  4. 1/5The Worst 401k App in the Investment Industry

Ive used apps for retirement accounts with Principal, Vanguard, E*Trade, Fidelity, Merill Lynch, and Robinhood. Principal is BY FAR the worst of them. The app is incredibly unintuitive and it takes an obscene amount of clicks to get to anything. Some of the worst offenders: 1. You can’t see pre-tax and Roth split out. You used to under “Contribution totals by source” (although it was many clicks + some math to get real totals), but, after a recent update, I can’t find Roth totals at all (I’ve clicked into every option on the app). 2. Finding tax documents at the end of the year was so confusing. There is no “tax center” where documents auto-populate, you have to go into a completely unintuitive part of the app (takes like 5 clicks to get there) and then you have to “request” you documents for them to even show up. I had to google how to do this. 3. The app logs me out every time (Face ID login is enabled) 4. I had a bug that locked me out of seeing my account on the app for 2-3 months (desktop worked fine, uninstalled multiple times, reported bug). 5. Theres no way to see how much you have made in a certain time range (you can only see % return (takes 4 clicks) and balance increase, but can’t seperate out contributions from gains). The Vangaurd app has pretax vs Roth, $ Gain, and the tax center FROM THEIR HOMEPAGE (not a single click necessary). The dev team needs to download some of these other apps, open a roth ira, and study.

  5. 5/5Just your average Joe with a rollover IRA

I was very frustrated when I had learned my old employee rolled my IRA to a different financial group, then I look online and see all the horror stories about Principal Financial and their app. I had no choice but to find out for myself because that’s where my money is. Let me just say I’ve had zero problems with the app, zero problems with the company, and would recommend anyone who is on the fence about it to just try it for yourself. I was waiting to be disappointed and to my surprise I’ve had nothing but a positive experience.
