  1. 5/5The best alternative to iOS books

I’ve been using this app instead of iOS Books, and honestly it’s been a much better experience. It’s incredibly easy to use, the interface is clean and simple, and everything just works the way it should. What I appreciate most is the freedom it gives users to add their own books without unnecessary restrictions or complicated steps. That alone makes it stand out from other reading apps. It makes organizing and accessing my library effortless. A big thank you to the developers for creating an app that clearly puts users first. You’ve built something practical, reliable, and refreshingly straightforward. It’s rare to find an app this well thought out these days — keep up the excellent work!

  2. 5/5And it’s free, too?!!!

So, the fact that there were so few reviews made me doubt the high rating, and the fact that it was free had me doubting it was any good at all. But, after reading the other reviews, AND seeing the praise for and responses from the developer, I decided to give it a chance. In a word…? SUPURB!!! Interface and controls and pretty intuitive, and I love the prompting for combining files into one book and the details box. Only thing I can see missing is being able to grab that details info from the file meta data. Maybe that a future update?

  3. 1/5Latest Update NUKED My Entire Library

I really liked this app, but, when I ran the latest update it completely nuked my whole library. Hundreds of books, dozens of playlists, bookmarks, and notes all gone. Needless to say, this is unacceptable. Since I cannot trust that it won’t happen again, so I will have to move on…and continue the search for the right audiobook app. Devs please don’t let this happen to other people! UPDATE: 4/5/26 - the developer left a reply to this review, saying that it was a one time thing. He is either incompetent or is not telling the truth. Unfortunately, I took him at his word and rebuilt my library only to have the most recent update again nuke my entire library. There’s simply no way to use this app long-term if you are an audiobook person. Having to rebuild your library again and again makes no sense for someone who listens to more than one audiobook a year. Shame on the developer!

  4. 5/5Best in class

First, dev should consider options for accepting tips because this app rocks. I tried a similar app, but the speed settings & sleep timer options for Novelwave beat the competition. (Stop at end of chapter = genius!) Playback speeds are incrementally adjustable by .05x so I can always get exactly the one that fits best. This also supports "Now Playing" in Carplay. Plus, it doesn't require an account so I appreciate the privacy of my data. Get this app if you need an audiobook player!!

  5. 5/5Perfect!

I was using Apple Books for my imported audiobooks, but the ux was horrible for simple audiobook listening. Having to wade through ads for books and confusing menu tabs to get to my content was frustrating. Novelwave is exactly what I wanted. I open the app and all my audiobooks are right in front of me, ready to play, with all the listening tools I need and 0 clutter. Easily worth my first AppStore review in 15 years.

  • 1.1.0

We’ve made some great improvements to make your audiobook experience even smoother! Now, the app remembers your last listened audiobook and shows it in the mini-player when you open it - no more searching. You’ll also see better duration tracking: new and finished audiobooks display their total time, while in-progress ones show how much is left. Oh, and we squashed a pesky bug that sometimes forgot your listening progress. No more losing your place! Enjoy your audiobooks, and thanks for using Novelwave!

  • 1.2.0

Playback speed is now saved per audiobook! Choose your preferred speed, and we’ll remember it until you finish the book or reset your progress.

  • 1.3.0

You can now set the player to stop playing at the end of a chosen chapter. Perfect for drifting off without missing a word!

  • 1.3.1

  • 1.5.0

You can now see audiobook progress as a percentage in your library. We also added a simple Settings page so you can decide whether 30‑second rewind/fast‑forward should cross chapter boundaries.

  • 1.5.1

Playback is now smoother and more responsive, with improved battery efficiency while listening.

  • 1.6.0

You can now choose your preferred skip duration in Settings, and playback speed can go up to 6x for even quicker listening.

  • 1.6.1

This update fixes an issue with playback skip duration not being set initially. It now defaults to 30 seconds, unless changed in the Settings page.

  • 2.0.0

Version 2.0 is a complete rewrite of the implementation, with a focus on performance and reliability. Major issues of the previous versions, such as inconsistent progress tracking have been fixed, and the UI has been updated to improve the user experience.

  • 2.1.0

Version 2.1.0 reintroduces light mode and adds a setting to manually set between light, dark and system default theming.

  • 2.2.0

Version 2.2.0 brings the following improvements: - Added new 60-minute and 90-minute sleep timer options; - Improved the mini player UI; - Added release date, genre, composer, and description fields to Edit Audiobook, with automatic import extraction when available; - Updated the Settings screen (now My Profile) with dedicated What's New and Get in touch sections; - Added a What's New sheet on first launch to showcase the latest updates.

  • 2.3.0

    Version 2.3.0 brings the following improvements: - Added separate skip duration controls for rewind and fast-forward; - Improved metadata extraction to better detect and preserve audiobook information; - You can now create a new collection directly while moving multiple items; - You can now open the App Store review form from My Profile anytime and share what you enjoy or what could be better;

  • 2.4.0

Version 2.4.0 brings the following improvements: - Added small and medium home screen widgets to quickly resume your currently listening audiobook. - Rewind and fast-forward can now continue into the previous or next file within the same audiobook. - Choose whether an audiobook should automatically start playing each time you open it. - Optionally rewind the audiobook slightly whenever playback pauses, so you never lose your place. - The chapters and bookmarks list now remembers your last selected tab, so you pick up exactly where you left off.

  • 2.4.1

This version contains a potential fix for the blank widget state that some users experience, as well as better thermal and battery management.

  • 2.4.2

Fix an issue with "Now Playing" controls on the lock screen not working randomly.

  • 2.5.0

    This update brings the following updates: - Playback can now pick back up automatically after Siri, a call, an alarm, or a timer interrupts your audiobook; - The player now shows your overall progress percentage along with the total time left in the audiobook; - Free up space with a new Settings option that scans for and removes leftover audiobook files from prior versions or interrupted deletes;

  • 2.5.2

This minor update fixes a bug where audiobooks that use video tracks for artworks could not be imported, as well as fixing the layout for the remaining duration on smaller devices.

  • 2.5.3

Version 2.5.3 fixes widgets not syncing properly, updates the remaining listening duration to take account of playback speed, and updates the player view background based on the audiobook artwork.

  • 2.5.4
