  1. 5/5The best

I’ve looked into a lot of notetaking and task management apps over the last 10 or 15 years. Noteplan is the one app that rules them all. It really is just absolutely brilliant. Especially with the addition of the incredible automations and features that are provided by many great plug-ins that other developers have kindly written and made public. I use Noteplan for all my task management now, which integrates nicely with my calendar and Apple reminders. I also use it for storing the bulk of my Notes and research Info. Although for larger amounts of data, what I would call the heavy lifting of my “second brain”, I do also use Obsidian. Thankfully, Obsidian and Noteplan can integrate quite nicely with Obsidian so that the two are able to work on the same data repository. I could rave on and on about this app, but really just try it out. But, do take the time to go through the many excellent tutorial videos, because there really is so much power in this app especially in the many shortcuts and automations that it has. Without really learning about the features, it may seem a little underwhelming. Once you get familiar with what it’s capable of I can promise you it’s probably gonna seem a little overwhelming. However, it’s then just a matter of getting familiar with what you need to use.

  2. 5/5Noteplan 3 is unstoppable!

Hi there, I recently downloaded this app and fell in love with it at first sight(or use). I have used all other productivity apps out there across both iOS and Mac, but nothing comes close to the features Noteplan provides. The ability to access and modify my notes, tasks and calendar, all in one place, cross-platform is beyond amazing! That is the foremost thing that sets Noteplan apart, in fact, a class apart from all other apps out there. They all seem to be missing one or the other feature and the closest anything has come to meeting that benchmark, is this app. I saw that people were raving about it on Twitter as well and I couldn't help but get this. I am on a free trial right now and I am set to get the paid version of the app in Sep -The fact that I am leaving a review at this stage is only indicative of the HUGE potential and brilliance of this app. I observed also, like one of the other reviewers here, that the development team is quite responsive and I really appreciate the fact. As a fan of this app, you can expect your team hearing from me with inputs and feedback along the way - I want to see this app get better and the best! There is so much potential here and I am in love with this! Thank you for your and the work of your team to make this possible! 🙏🏻😀 Anubha

  3. 5/5When To-Do is not enough

This app is great for busy individuals who work on extremely complicated projects. If you’re a person who thinks that 24hours is not enough to get things done this app is for you. Personally I do many different, complicated things. From having a homestead and selling at farmers markets to managing a manufacturing shop and working in insurance I am in dozens of meetings every week and there’s a crazy amount of information shared with me. To remember it all is impossible. This app allows me to write it down in easy to remember tasks and link it to notes where I can see the bigger picture for all the things I need to do. The app being able to link to the calendar is incredible as well! Before the meeting I can simply press the button and it brings me back to a note where all the main ideas for the specific meeting are. Since I started using this app there has not been a day where I felt underprepared for anything since it takes 5 minutes of reading my notes to get back to speed on any of the many things that I have to work on. If you’re extremely busy, juggling multiple projects all at the same time and on some days your only free time is traveling from one meeting to the next, I can’t recommend this app enough.

  4. 5/5Perfect app for busy people!

I tested out tons of different task and note-taking apps before finding this one--what I was specifically looking for was a digital version of a bullet journal. On top of all the bullet journal functionality I was looking for, I'm discovering many other ways of staying organized. It's taking mental bandwidth I used to devote to keeping track of things and instead letting me feel like I'm on top of my work. I've been using it for over two years now. I'm a professor, so I juggle many hats throughout the day, as well as manage and push forward my own research projects. Anyone who has to do any kind of project management, either at home or at work, will make their life easier with this software. I used to look sideways at "productivity" apps... who has time for them? But this is absolutely making my life easier and me more productive! It somehow reaches the right balance between being simple and intuitive to use, but with lots of deep functionality if you're looking for it. Plus, the developers are coming up with new updates all the time, and they are so kind and helpful when you reach out to them with questions.

  5. 5/5Flexible enough to handle my unconventional workflow

As someone who’s always on the lookout for productivity apps that can adapt to my unconventional workflow, I often find myself caught between a desire for structure and a need for flexibility. Traditional calendar apps usually fall short of this balance, and while I dabble in bullet journaling, the method's inherent fluidity can sometimes be a bit too loose for my tastes. Enter NotePlan, a recent discovery through my Setapp subscription. From my initial impressions, it seems to be the ideal tool for someone like me. NotePlan promises to merge a structured calendar approach with a free-form system for organizing daily tasks and goals. This combination appears to be a perfect match for my "sudo-bullet journal" style, offering the best of both worlds. The app's integration of calendar and note-taking functionalities appears robust and user-friendly, allowing me to lean into my scheduling while still maintaining the flexibility to adjust and organize key elements of my day. While I’m still in the early stages of using NotePlan, the early signs suggest it’s a promising solution for those of us who thrive on a blend of structure and creative freedom in our productivity tools.

FOLDING TASKS AND BULLETS With this release, folding comes to tasks and bullets—no longer limited to headings! Now you can keep your notes cleaner and more organized by folding any task or bullet point with indented content below it, including images, code blocks, or text. HOW IT WORKS 1. To start, add a task or bullet point and press enter to create a new line. 2. Tap on the indent button in the toolbar to indent any sub-tasks, bullets, or notes beneath it. 3. You can now fold the main task or bullet by placing the cursor into the line, then tapping the folding icon (two arrows pointing towards each other) in the ⌘-menu on the right of the toolbar or, if it’s a task you can also tap on the check on the left to find the folding option. 5. For quick folding, use CMD + / to toggle folding on and off on iPad. USE CASES - Simplify your task lists by grouping sub-tasks or related notes under a main task. - Hide long notes or details within project tasks, revealing them only when you need them. - Organize research notes, tracking your progress without clutter. - Hide code blocks by indenting each line in the block, including the triple backticks at the start or end. Any text with indented lines can be folded, whether it’s tasks, sub-tasks, simple notes, or mixed content (can be plain text). OTHER IMPROVEMENTS - Improved slow searching when you had attachments like PDFs in the regular folders. - Fixed loading images in PDFs and RTF exports. - Added x-callback-url to install plugin (/installPlugin?pluginID=) - Drawings auto-save now while you work on them. - Added support to copy images from Apple Notes. - Fixed Apple Intelligence keyboard being covered up. - Fixed regular notes not supporting ‘under heading’ in filters. - Fixed syncing issues.

  • 3.15.1

Following up with the main release, we did some polishing on the folded tasks, bug fixing, performance improvements, and sync maintenance. NEW - Added an API call to OpenAI: `NotePlan.ai(prompt, [file1, file2])`, which becomes very useful in templates. It can read the content of the specified files and work on them using the prompt to return say a random bullet point or the next open task from a note. - Added a folding button to iOS, which appears if you set the cursor into a line that's foldable. IMPROVED - Updated the design of the unfold button ("...") behind folded lines. - Folding button positioning fixed, so it appears also close left of indented tasks. FIXED - Folding issue was fixed when headings and task folding were mixed. - Performance issues fixed with loading and updating events and reminders in the background that led to high memory and CPU usage due to deadlocks. - Plugin download issues fixed. SYNC - Fixed issues with encryption. - Fixed issues when reuploading notes on one device without re-downloading them from scratch on other devices. This is another smaller release to fix a few issues we have discovered and to make performance improvements. NEW - Added open task/checklist count badge to folded lists. FIXED - Couldn't use bold, italic, etc. formatting on folded items. - Fixed plugin issues with defining the right note type (it had to be capitalized, like "Calendar" and not "calendar") - Fixed the start date of repeating tasks, when the task has a schedule date (this date will be used as the start now) - Fixed tapping into an empty task completed it. - Fixed creating synced lines of folded lines. - Fixed crashes with stale Reminders. - Optimization fixes when loading events and reminders in the background.

The latest NotePlan update brings you the all-new Card View (Kanban!) and the powerful Notes Table, now available on iPhone and iPad. These features are designed to help you visualize projects and notes, making planning and productivity smoother than ever. Here’s what’s new: KANBAN-STYLE CARD VIEW — Organize your notes visually The new Card View allows you to: - Turn your notes into cards, group them into columns and drag them across the columns to organize your projects. - Use Frontmatter to group notes into columns. What is Frontmatter? Frontmatter is metadata added at the top of your notes, enclosed within triple dashes (---). This metadata can include fields like tags, dates, or status values. For example, you can add status: To Do to a note to group it in the "To Do" column. Example: --- status: To Do --- # Note Title Benefits: - Project Management: Create columns to represent stages of progress (e.g., "To Do," "In Progress," "Done"). - Task Prioritization: Visually sort and rearrange notes based on urgency or importance. - Personal Use Example: Track your book reading with a Kanban board. Create columns like "Want to Read," "Currently Reading," "Finished," and "Rated." Add notes for each book and update their status as you progress through your reading list. To get started: 1. Tap on a folder to open the Notes Table. 2. Switch the "Style" to "Cards." 3. Add Frontmatter with grouping values to your relevant notes (e.g., status: To Do). 4. Use the "Group By" option to select the field from the Frontmatter that you want to group your notes by. This will create the columns. 5. Drag notes between columns as you make progress. NOTES TABLE COMES TO iOS — Get a bird’s-eye view Our popular Notes Table is not also available on iPhone and iPad. It's also powered by frontmatter, so you can add custom fields besides the defaults of title, folder, date and tags. Key Features: - Sort, filter, and manage all your notes in an organized table layout. - Quickly locate notes, sort by date, or apply filters to find exactly what you need. To use the Notes Table: 1. Click on a folder to open the Notes Table. 2. Customize your view by sorting and filtering to keep an overview of your projects. Perfect for staying organized on the go! IMPROVED & FIXED - Improved Obsidian import for a smoother experience. - Fixed a crash when clicking on weekly or monthly notes. - Improved detection of frontmatter when empty lines appear before it. - Prevent a crash when closing HTML plugin windows. - Fixed copying links to synced lines. - Updated the design of timeblock notifications to be slimmer. - Fixed Web Views not deinitializing when closed. - References that are collapsed in the original note now display correctly, without unwanted ellipses. - Fixed saving tables with short headings that resulted in invalid Markdown. If you’re enjoying these updates, please consider leaving a rating or review! Your feedback directly shapes new features and improvements, helping us make NotePlan even better for you.

  • 3.16.1

In this smaller update we are shipping lots of improvements for the notes list and cards views to make it easier to work out of those new views as well as a smaller new feature that lets you change the background color of notes, plus many smaller improvements. NEW FEATURES: 1. "Add Notes" in Card & List Views + Context Menu - Quickly add new notes right where you need them with the new "plus" button beside the folder or column name in both views (list and cards). - Long-press for quick actions (open in a new window on iPad, move to Trash/Archive, and more). - If you group your notes by "folder", the complete path will be displayed, so you know exactly what you are looking at. 2. Change the Background Color of Individual Notes - Use "bg-color" and "bg-color-dark" in a note’s frontmatter to set custom background colors (supports hex and Tailwind CSS colors). Switch out of the note and back in to see the changes. Example: bg-color: bg-green-100 bg-color-dark: bg-green-950 More details in our help center: https://help.noteplan.co/article/252-change-the-color-of-a-card The background color is also displayed in the notes list and card views. IMPROVEMENTS AND BUG FIXES - Fixes for Images and Previews: - Tapping an image in edit mode no longer automatically opens a preview (making it easier to set the cursor). - A new "Preview" option in the context menu lets you view images while still in edit mode. - Web images can now be previewed directly in the app. - Copying images from a website now correctly copies the image data instead of just a link. - Notes List and Cards: - Added icons for default fields (folder, date edited, date created, tags). - Renamed "date" to "date edited" and added "date created". - Improved performance showing frontmatter fields in lists and cards. - Cards View and Folders: - Fixed issues with dragging cards between columns (dragging would sometimes fail on iOS after the first attempt). - Corrected sub-folder sorting in list and card views (now sorted by path instead of title). - You can now move notes between folders in the card view. - Other Fixes and Updates: - Added a menu item to re-add sample meeting note templates. - Fixed UI glitches when renaming folders in the sidebar. - Updated the internal templating plugin to fix a text replacement issue. - Added Notes Helper as a core plugin. - Fixed text truncation issues in various views and the API. - Improved performance when switching between revisions and when opening large notes. - Fixed an attachment (images) loading issue when using both web images and regular image attachments inside a note. If you are happy with the app, please rate it, or even leave a review. This is a great way to support us, indie developers. Thanks a lot!

  • 3.16.4

This is a quick update to clean up a few bugs after the last major release. FIXES - Fixed issues in the Kanban and Notes List with case-sensitive keys (i.e. keys written sometimes with lowercase and other times with uppercase) - Fixed issues with invalid frontmatter (if you added a line separator at the top of your note and didn't follow it with key: value pairs) - Fixed possible attachment deletion issue when moving a folder with the same name as a note that has attachments - Fixed crashes because the frontmatter fields didn't resign the focus properly - Fixed bug in RTF export where numbered lists had an extra space - Fixed issues with case-sensitive note titles in the properties. - Fixed plugin download issues (the download was triggered twice by the plugin) And other minor fixes, see the full list on our noteplan.co/changelog page. LAST MAJOR RELEASE This update is all about Note Properties (aka Frontmatter). In the last two updates we have added new ways to display your notes (as list or Kanban style cards) which heavily rely on editing the frontmatter (note properties). For example to define groups for your notes so you can build a nice Kanban board. So it was just time to make editing the note properties easier. As a bonus we have added a few default properties, like a note icon, and the note background color. Note properties will be a central part for building more "database"-like features in the next few months. NEW FEATURES: 1. Note Properties (Frontmatter) Editor • Show/Hide the Frontmatter at the top of your notes • Add, edit, delete properties through a user interface instead of the raw text • Copy, paste and add properties from other notes (using the menu button top right of the properties view or the button left of a property) • Choose existing properties from a drop down, so you don't need to guess anymore (it picks up suggestions by scanning other notes) • Select a note icon, the icon color, and icon style from a drop down • Select note background color from a color palette 2. Note Icons • Support added for note icons in the sidebar and notes list • You can select the icon from a list in the frontmatter editor 3. Title bar with full path • Find the full path + title of your note at the top in the navigation bar. We made it horizontally scrollable, so things won't be truncated and always readable. IMPROVEMENTS AND BUG FIXES 1. API and Templates • Extended NotePlan.ai function in templates (and plugin code) to support folders and a range of calendar notes ('last 7 days', or '... weeks', '... months' etc.) and a model parameter. See help docs for more ("AI Prompts in Templates") • Fixed saving html into clipboard (using Clipboard.setStringForType(your html data, "public.html") 2. Images and File Attachments • Fixed images shifting down when indenting on macOS • Fixed issue where attachments were not synced due to broken attachment markdown • Fixed attachments being deleted when editing notes through filters or search • Fixed image sync deadlock if you have added images on two devices • Improve images with rounded corners and a border 3. Other Fixes • Fix clicking on new note links created the note in root if the folder contained ampersand • Hex colors codes are now validated in the frontmatter (so you don't set the background to an unreadable black accidentally). • Fixed the sidebar sorting so numbers in folder names and notes are sorted correctly • Fixed creating meeting notes through the timeline • Fixed issues when scheduling folded tasks or tasks with synced lines. 4. Other Improvements • Removed search result limits • Ignore tags that are surrounded by double quotes like "#tag", especially useful for hex codes in frontmatter • Sync notes list settings again between devices If you are happy with the app, please rate it, or even leave a review. This is a great way to support us, indie developers. Thanks a lot!

This update extends the Kanban views to support tasks and we are introducing Teamspaces as Lab feature. In the last few updates, we’ve added new ways to view and organize your notes, like Kanban boards and note properties. Now, we’re building on that by adding a new level: Tasks. Instead of seeing a list or Kanban board of notes, you can go a level deeper and see the tasks inside the notes. Group, filter and sort them by state, note, heading, tag or attributes inside your tags. NEW FEATURES: 1. Tasks Kanban • View all tasks from a folder (and its subfolders) as Kanban cards, grouped by status or other properties • Drag and drop tasks between columns to change their status or attributes • Filter tasks by tags, dates, or custom properties (through attributed tags) in the Kanban view • Group tasks by tags or properties inside the tags (similar to note properties / frontmatter) • Open the Kanban view from any folder by choosing "Level: Tasks" and "Style: Cards" in menu at the top What are attributed tags? Across different notes, you can add tags like "#todo" to a task and display them in the Kanban board. Add attributes using "#todo(state: backlog)" for example (key: value pairs in parentheses). The folder views let you filter, group and sort by these attributes in tags. You can also change the icon, and icon color of tasks using attributed tags (example: "#todo(icon: hammer, icon-color: green-600)"). 2. Teamspaces (Lab Feature) • Create shared workspaces for team members to work on regular notes, daily and weekly notes, and tasks • Invite team members by email to join a Teamspace with real-time updates • Assign tasks, share notes, and track progress in a Teamspace • Available as a Settings > Lab feature, and we’d love your feedback to improve it To get started, go to Settings > Lab and sign in using any email address. Then create teamspaces and invite other NotePlan users. Teamspace notes are separated from private notes. IMPROVEMENTS AND BUG FIXES API and Plugins • Extended the API to work with teamspace notes Note Properties • AI can now add properties to your notes. Expand the properties panel at the top and hit the AI button on the right side. It will add colors and an icon to your note. If you have notes in the same folder that already have properties, it will read those and look for patterns to apply. • Added new properties to individualize your notes. You can now use `bg-pattern` with following values: lines, dotted, squared or mini-squared to give your notes a background pattern. This pattern (along with the background color) will be also used for the drawing canvas. Search • Improved search performance by ignoring non-note files, if you added any during an import (such as CSVs, SVGs, etc.). Crashes and Memory Leaks • Fixed various crashes and issues with increasing memory usage. Other • Improved copy and paste from websites or chatGPT. It added way too many linebreaks and couldn't handle lists and indentation correctly, now it can! • Improved conflict resolution between two notes. If you are happy with the app, please rate it, or even leave a review. This is a great way to support us, indie developers. Thanks a lot!

This update enhances your NotePlan experience with powerful AI improvements in Note Properties, easier link editing, automated daily backups, and several key improvements and bug fixes. ENHANCEMENTS: 1. Find more info in our help docs, search for "Advanced Search" • Named Folder Views: Access your saved folder views directly from the Command Bar or via x-callback-URLs. It’s now much quicker to jump back to your favorite filters. • Timeline: Fixed scrolling when dragging events, plus a new subtle animation when you long-press events so it’s clear the gesture is supported. The highlights: wiki links can now have aliases, the share extension was rebuilt to accept any kind of content and sync it across your devices, plugins load faster with quicker access to their settings, and tables gained reordering. WIKI LINKS - Aliases — give a wiki link a custom display name with a pipe: [[Project XYZ | Roadmap]] links to Project XYZ but shows as "Roadmap". • v3.16.3

This update is all about Note Properties (aka Frontmatter). Images and File Attachments • Fixed images shifting down when indenting on macOS • Fixed issue where attachments were not synced due to broken attachment markdown (from imports for example). • Fixed attachments being deleted when editing notes through filters or search • Fixed image sync deadlock if you have added images on two devices by uploading placeholder images. • Improve images with rounded corners and a border 3. Other Fixes • Fix clicking on new note links created the note in root if the folder contained ampersand • Hex colors codes are now validated in the frontmatter (so you don't set the background to an unreadable black accidentally). • Fixed the sidebar sorting so numbers in folder names and notes are sorted correctly (like "20.10 - Areas" is below, i.e. greater than "20.1 - Areas") • Fixed creating meeting notes through the timeline • Fixed issues when scheduling folded tasks or tasks with synced lines.
