2/5Buy paper tix until this app is fixed
App was fine before in early summer when I used it, as of Aug 25th 2023 is very glitchy, wouldn’t process my (easy) ticket I normally get and a friend traveling with me ended up accidentally buying 6 (!) of the same tickets because the app kept telling them the purchase didn’t go through and to try again. They did actually go through, even after refreshing things the app didn’t send a pop up notice the purchase was successful, and NJ Transit didn’t send a receipt promptly via email saying so. Being on a train platform or on a train running into ticket/app problems creates high stress and headaches for conductors who end up hearing valid excuses why you can’t show your ticket, or that you were just overcharged trying to buy 1 but ended up with 6. Apparently NJ Transit doesn’t like giving refunds (what a scam) so my friends forced to try to use the extra tix to a location she doesn’t often go. NJ has a millions of tech IT people who can capably fix app bugs I’m sure.. NJ Transit management needs to hire better tech developers to keep these problems from happening-do more test runs before releasing a new update. Amateurs should not be running an app that a half million people or so need for train commuting. Please stay on top of tech issues and fix asap! Or just go back to paper tickets til app bugs are sorted out.

1/5Used to work
If any user is looking at reviews to see if you should update the app, DONT! I’ve been using this app for years and it’s never been a good app but at least it used to kind of work. After the app stopped loading departure vision a few days ago I was told there was a new update to fix it, so I downloaded the new update. Huge mistake, now I am logged out of my account and there has been a “server error” so I can’t be logged back in. I tried deleting and reinstalling the app, now it just stays on the loading screen for hours and never loads. I tried changing my password to see if that would let me in but when I try I get a message saying my phone is “unverified” so they can’t send me a email (even though I’ve been using the app since 2018!) to change my password until I log into my account on my phone (incredible logic on that one nj transit). I tried going through the website instead of the app and then I get a “something went wrong” message. I had over a weeks worth of tickets in my account that I had already paid for. I’ve tried contacting customer service, but since nj transit doesn’t seem to have an IT department, customer service’s response is just “sorry for the inconvenience, thank you for using nj transit” (as if I have a choice). I wish I hadn’t updated the app, I’d much rather not have departure vision and not lost all the tickets I’d already paid for. Now I have to rebuy all those tickets I already paid for again, in paper form since I can’t use the app without logging in (not that I would trust nj transit with my money in the app again).

3/5While a good app, NJ Transit still has room for A LOT of improvements
Public transport in the United States is something like a fruit cake at a Christmas party. It is a part of the culture, everyone knows about it, but many people actively choose to avoid it at all costs. We all want it to be better, it has a huge amount of potential, but it’s focus is still in the wrong areas. If there is any public transit that has actively helped the masses, while time and time again shot itself in the foot; it is without a doubt NJ transit. To make a long story short, use this app for the railways. It’s is easy, convenient, and green. The bus system however, has so many different flaws to purchase tickets for where you want to go, it’ll make your head spin. Just use cash to buy tickets on the bus. It is incredibly inconvenient in this cashless world we live in, and can lead to a lot of pocket change flying around, but it is considerably easier and consistent in contrast to the app. Don’t even get me started on bus zone transfer fees in the app. I pray one day they streamline the ticket process, because NJ transit workers are some of the best in the industry. Super kind and helpful staff, and they also understand how much of a crapshoot the app can be bus wise. They all tell me the same thing. Go to your bank’s ATM and pay cash. It’ll make everyone’s life easier and you’re paying the proper fare, every time. I want to reiterate, my issue lies with the bus system. The Rail system works fine on the app. Buy your tickets for that on here. Just pay cash for the bus. You’ll make everything better while getting where you need to go.

4/5Great Update Overall, But One Annoying Navigation Change
The new NJ TRANSIT app looks cleaner and runs better overall, but there’s one change that makes it frustrating to use. In the previous version, opening the app would take you directly to your active ticket and still show the navigation bar at the bottom (Favorites, My Tickets, Home, Rider Tools, More). That made it easy to quickly switch back and check bus schedules or arrival times. In the new update, the app still opens to your active ticket, but it takes up the entire screen. The bottom navigation bar disappears, and the only way to go back is by tapping the small back arrow in the top-left corner. When you’re rushing to see when the next bus is coming—especially since bus arrival times aren’t always reliable—having to reach for that tiny back arrow slows you down. A simple fix would be allowing a left-swipe gesture to return to the main menu or restoring the bottom navigation while the ticket is open. Everything else about the update is great, but this one UI change makes the app less convenient for daily riders.

1/5Underfunded joke of public transport has a terrible app, shocker
I wish I could give this app 0 stars. It is terribly designed. Firstly, they need to update it so transit riders can purchase a ticket without creating an account. I went to buy a ticket on my way to catch my train and tried to create an account, but it said my email had been used previously to purchase a ticket so I needed to finish setting up my account. I clicked to send the email to set up the account, and nothing. I clicked resend 3-4 times, still nothing. I had to purchase my ticket at the station’s kiosk (which was cash only? Does NJ transit just not want to take people’s money? Why is it so hard to buy a ticket). About 10 mins into my train ride, the email came through. The schedule part of the app is also confusing as someone who doesn’t take NJ transit every day and was trying to get there from NYC. I was trying to compare times to different stops and I had to keep clicking out, putting in the new destination, and the app doesn’t have a history option to show routes you previously looked up. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that the underfunded joke that is NJ transit can’t shell out the funds to design an easy to use app.

This app is an absolute scam! After receiving my digital monthly bus passes on it for years on my Samsung anroid phone without warning the app apparently isn't compatible with my device anymore, when I tried to update to the new version it can't & my monthly pass was already sent & paid for $64 but I can't get it. Now I have to purchase a second pass for $64 which will cost me a total of $124 for a 1 zone! Is this what the developers & transit does, steal off of people. I will be reporting this!

The latest version of the app is clearly an effort to make the UI look more modern, that was rushed out ahead of the world cup. While the app looks better, it is bereft of basic functionality, like being able to look up schedules for the following day. The real crime is that this version of the App has been out for over a month with no apparent effort to resolve the bugs that are expected with an overhaul like this.
