1. 4/5Good but buggy

   Edit: after deleting and redownloading the app, all my issues have gone away so far! Much happier with it now. The only thing I feel is missing is shuffling all of my known flash cards whenever I want. I like that it shows me flash cards at the right time, but I wish I could review them all randomly at anytime. I like the app and the learning system, but the bugs are annoying and I’m considering switching despite liking the learning structure. It takes me through the initial setup and login anytime I’ve had the app closed for a few hours. Luckily my info is saved with my login. It redownloads all 9 sound sets every time as well, and it’s never able to download the advanced one and pops up saying that constantly.

   I’m into my second month of no stress, almost passive learning, of French. I had intensively studied months before with another very popular online language platform that omits any practice of pronunciation, which in French is essential, for just basic communication. Mosa, from the start focuses on aural/oral skills and because of this I am really learning how to understand and communicate. Being able to identify the sound of the word with it’s written form is essential particularly for French, which is most decidedly not phonetic. I’ve just started a mini-series, L’homme sans nom, which presents and reviews targeted vocabulary and phrases that promise to build to achieve good comprehension. (MosaLingua backs this up with a money back guarantee. So they are serious.) I am very enthusiastic about this because in all of my decades of teaching and studies, I know that the first real and significant goal of comprehension is achieved. It is part of the innate process of language acquisition. I also want to add that with the few times I have had to contact MosaLingua, either by email or chat, they have always been extremely prompt and effective in resolving issues or doubts. This, when tech increasingly is turning to bot responses or endless wait times, is so important. I am so great full for direct communication with a human being. I’m getting the idea that MosaLingua understands the power of the internet as a resource for online learning without it changing the focus from the real world, where language actually happens in original form, instead of hooking you into say a tech game or VR.

3. 3/5Good but Some Issues

   Everyone has their own best way to learn. This is a flash card based learning program that worked well for me. It’s very straight forward and basic with many options to utilize such as actual conversations to listen to. The issue for me was it’s not very intuitive to use. Navigation throughout the program and its interface seems antiquated compared to other programs I have used. The actual learning aspects of the program I like just not how they go about delivering it. One of the reasons I purchased the app was for the good review about the hands free option. The app would stop the audio when my I phone screen went into sleep mode. Music and podcasts wouldn’t do it so I reached out to support. Well they informed me that due to the apps limitation it can’t function conveniently like other audio applications and I will need to use its sleep mode. Even with sleep mode it still shuts off. For its price based on functionality I would look elsewhere

   Better than most, however ... 1: the developer claims timed repetition, yet the timed repetition is not consistent. 2: Could a future release add the ability to categorize phrases of importance to the learner? 3: There is no pattern building. So, we do not learn simpler vocabulary and build to more difficult vocabulary. Nor, does the app start with simpler sentences and build up to more complex. 4: The worst part is inconsistent vocabulary and grammar usage — there are items translated or used differently without regard for the learner — this leaves me confused about what I should learn. For example: Pazhalistuh is used for please, unfortunately, the word is translated both at the beginning and end of sentences contradicting the original English sentence. ‘Would you do this please;’ becomes in Russian ‘Please, would you do this.’ Most sentence logic does not need consistent order in English or in Russian. However, it would be easier to learn one pattern instead of several patterns. 5: Also, with regard to semantic domain and range? Will a future release focus upon building core vocabulary and then adding nuanced vocabulary. For example: vegetable before lettuce and onions; bird before blackbird and eagle, etc. Stated differently — Could we learn to walk before we run? Do we really need to learn ‘car,’ ‘automobile,’ ‘bicycle,’ ‘truck,’ and ‘bus’ BEFORE we learn drive, walk, and ride? Yes, verbs of motion are difficult, but if this concept is that difficult could we move the more difficult towards the end? 6: unless I forget: IT WASTES MY TIME learning 2 words on the same card necklace and collar for example. Further: WHY are there so many needless words of more than 4 or 5 syllables? Regards Wayne

5. 5/5Seventy days of MosaLingua

   I gave up on Spanish after years of study. Decided to try Italian,but this time using my ears as much as possible. So far I can understand spoken Italian better than I ever could understand Spanish. I could read Spanish very well at one time. However, when attempting to communicate with a Spanish only speaker, it was just like Mark Twain’s quote, they had no clue how to speak my Spanish. MosaLingua gives the opportunity to use the ear predominantly. The app is beyond belief and I’ve tried many. Including Rosetta,Assamil,and several off brands,for Spanish, they provided intense sleeping opportunities as a beneficial side effect. With MosaLingua, you can go fast enough to stay motivated. We’ll see in one year if I can actually understand Italian movies, if so I’ll circle back to Spanish.
