1. 5/5AWESOME! Well worth the investment!

   I saw Masterclass many months ago and was VERY interested in checking it out. If you want to be successful you've gotta model others who have what you desire, but model them in finding yourself and your truth. I bought the full year Masterclass a little over a week ago as I'm always looking to further my knowledge and skills at anything I do. Being a full-time musician I've already watched the Carlos Santana & Christina Masterclasses and they were both very insightful! There is so many years of experience between those two amazingly talented musicians and to delve into the minds of people that are so successful at what they do is absolutely invaluable! I believe the trick to getting the best out of this Masterclass and learning in general is to listen with an open mind and pick the things that YOU deem useful for yourself that you can apply to whatever it is you are doing and just discard the rest. I mean even if you get 1-2 useful things per Masterclass that you can utilize for the rest of your life to make you a better musician, actor, or whatever it is you do then it's worth it! I always say that you have to be willing to invest in yourself because if you're not willing to invest in yourself then why should anyone else invest in you? I'll leave you with this quote that sums it up very nicely, "A true master realizes he/she is always a student." So glad I decided to give Masterclass a try as I've already gotten so much valuable info in just 2 classes and I'm planning on taking many more over the year membership! MASTERCLASS ROCKS!

2. 5/5LOVE MasterClass

   I am a person who loves to continue learning. For years I have been a fan of the Great Courses but many of their classes are soooooo boring in the way they are delivered, that I longed for more and had to push myself to finish a lot of them. They are showing improvement in their content- in part because of these people, I think. Competitors should push each other to improve because we all win that way. MasterClass right out of the box is a highly produced and high quality bunch of classes by those who have reached the top performance levels in their crafts. I have enjoyed the classes I have seen immensely and really learned a lot as a result. In fact, I couldn’t wait to see the next one! Actually, each class is so interesting, and they make you feel like you could actually do what they are teaching you to do. It’s also really cool to see these people differently than their basic professional personas. The classes that I have seen have really shown people with a high degree of passion for what they are teaching, and teaching it in such a way that all of us can engender that passion. It is so worth the investment to get the all access pass. It’s not cheap, but totally worth it. And they keep adding classes frequently. The accompanying class workbook is also pretty helpful. About the only thing I would add as a point of improvement to the app itself is to make it easier to search for those parts of the classes you are already taking. It seems to require a little more hunting than I would like to do.

   There are a lot of bugs in this app and I hope updates will fix them. Obviously the content is what’s most important, but it is a very glitchy interface. I’ll name a few of the larger problems, but there are many smaller ones. 1) When Chromecasting, the next lesson will not play automatically, but it will be queued up on the phone not playing. To play the next video you need to start playing a different one (this will cause it to disconnect from the chrome device) and then go back to the video you want and reconnect to the chrome device. 2) If you pause a video and leave the app open it will remain paused for 10-20 minutes and then begin paying again of its own accord on the phone in the background. This has happened twice and the first time it ran the entire night while I was asleep and marked all lessons played in that course. 3) If you want to browse through a course or simply add it to your list, the first video plays automatically and you have to pause it. So if you’re enrolling in many courses you have to start and pause a dozen times in a row just to add some courses to your list. Overall the service is great, but the app needs some work.

4. 1/5Good content, crippled by terrible Apple TV app

   I enjoy the content of a MasterClass a lot, but the Apple TV app is a shell of what it should be, and it really messes up the user experience. I can’t believe I’m even having to write this, but this “video teaching tool” actually doesn’t allow the user to rewind, fast forward, or skip forward or back 10 seconds. A video teaching tool where students can’t stop, rewind, and watch something again if they want. Basically none of the typical video controls that Apple offers to developers are used in the MasterClass ATV app. It’s maddening. To pay all this money for a yearly subscription and have an Apple TV app that’s this bad? To not be able to watch a video-based educational tool on the biggest screen in your house with basic fast-forward, rewind, and skip forward/back functionality seems like a joke, but one that paid subscribers aren’t laughing at. It wouldn't take much to fix it. Just use the video API’s that Apple makes available to all developers in the tvOS SDK toolkit, and make it so that students can rewind/rewatch a segment, fast-forward, and do all the normal video watching stuff using the Apple TV remote in the same way they can when watching HBO or Netflix. Also, it would be nice to be able to add + a program to “My List” the way iOS app and web users can. There is zero reason why the ATV app shouldn’t be as good or better than it is on other devices. If they don’t do some serious work on the ATV app, I won’t renew my subscription. An app this bad is user-hostile.

   From the moment I saw the first commercial for Master Class I said that is compelling. A year later my wife gifted me an unlimited subscription and I have been absorbing some of the greatest content from true experts that I have ever found. Master Classes are each independent and different in their own ways because the producers let the experts dictate the pace and the topics that are most important to the instructor and therefore the audience. Over the last 6months I have watched at least 25 full classes and parts and pieces of close to 25 more. There is so much amazing content. I devour the marketing/ business and off beat topics. I have learned skateboarding from Tony Hawk, Magic from Penn and Teller, and the inside story as to how Disney purchased Pixar directly from the man who orchestrated it. I see different topics that I think, that doesn’t interest me, but when I watch the opener I am usually hooked, and later find so many things that are applicable to me in my personal and professional life. I am always recommending Master Class to others. Where else can you get inside the thought process of a writer, composer, chef, skater, magician, designer, photographer, negotiator and so many more. It’s amazing. Thank you for all the time that has been dedicated to making these classes so engaging, educational, and entertaining.
