1. 5/5Finally! Geofencing actually works now!

   For years, the old Hubitat app had poor geofencing capabilities. Sometimes it worked, other times not. And about every other day, one had to kill the app and launch it again for it to update your location. The workaround was to sign up for Life360, install the app on your Hubitat hub, and use it for your automations. Well, that worked well until Life360 blocked access to their API, breaking this functionality for Hubitat. Users were left looking for workarounds, such as setting a trigger when a mobile device connects to the home WiFi (where the device receives a consistent IP address from the DHCP server on the router). All of these methods had drawbacks and were messy to implement and maintain. Last evening, when I launched the old Hubitat iOS app, I was notified about the new iOS app. So, I installed it and gave it a try. First, enabling geofencing in the new iOS app is much straightforward than it was on the old app. No having to configure extraneous options, like updating the location when the iPhone connects to a different network or motion is detected. You literally just enable geofencing and set your geofence boundary and that’s it. Next was the most important part, testing that geofencing actually works reliably in the new app. I am very pleased to announce that it not only works, but it more accurate and reliable than the old iOS app! A huge improvement! Finally, I can set up location-based automation and trust that they will work as intended. Thank you developers for the much improved app! PS: I see that some reviewers are complaining about the new iOS app crashing. So far, this has not happened to me. I am running an iPhone 14 Plus. So far, the new app has been stable for me.

2. 5/5Home Screen doesn’t update

   Just installed the new app and it seems to work ok, except for the following I’ve noticed so far: 1. The Home Screen doesn’t update unless I close the app and reopen it. 2. If I mark devices as favorites, the Home Screen will not adjust to show them until I change the settings or close and reopen the app.

3. 1/5Does Hubitat adamantly hate aesthetics? And working apps?

   Listen, I know the point of Hubitat is a home automation hub. The devs are focused on making features work with the hundreds upon hundreds of IoT devices. But this looks like the first website built by a 10th grader. The last app kind of looked better, but only marginally. I wouldn’t complain about the aesthetics if the features worked. And, at this point, basic UI things - like enabling geolocation during onboarding - are completely absent. “Press the gear icon” shouldn’t be a requirement for a user after digging through menus. And it should, you know, work too, which it doesn’t. Geolocation has been a long time problem with Hubitat’s apps. Hundreds - thousands - of other apps don’t seem to have these problems. At this point, there’s zero rationale for changing apps. Everything worked fine before. And now it works less fine. And I’ve got a new app to stumble through figuring out. Thanks, Hubitat.

4. 1/5Was working well, now constantly crashing

   I avoided the old apt, just used a vpn running on a $20 RP 2 within my LAN and a Safari window to get directly to my hub. Expected to do the same, ignoring the new app. But came to really like it. The geolocation settings were easier to use and very reliable (once I relocated the red pin to where my hub actually was). Indeed, I had given up on Hubitat geolocation, using Alexa instead. Was happy to be able to ditch Alexa and dependence on the cloud. Lately, though, the app (version 2.02) crashes every 30 seconds to 2 minutes. Sad to see as I am a great fan of Hubitat. I am happily a beta tester for platform versions and expect, consequently, that there will be bugs. But, I am disappointed to be, involuntarily, a beta tester for the app. And, while I never used the old app, many did; why withdraw it without having a prime-time ready replacement? Rooting for Hubitat and better experiences ahead.

5. 1/5What were they thinking?

   Long time HA user here. While the legacy app was relatively fugly, it provided all of the power that an HA user needed to manage and utilize their hub and network of devices. And the HA does require low-level access to be able to leverage its power when compared to some average, canned, limited home automation hub. It’s why we gravitate to the HA to begin with… customize the heck out of the system to meet all of our needs and dreams. This new app is a massive step backwards, perhaps even going back to the stone ages when it comes to capability. I can’t access any of my apps, settings, logs, etc., anymore. Why, oh why, Hubitat?!!
