  1. 5/5Do not pay for this application until you read this

Phone being used: iPhone 11 Pro Length spent with application: 1.5 years I first started using this application on my iPhone X, over a year ago. It was probably my favorite camera go to app. It really used to feel like the company was thriving on a great idea that had never been seen on an iPhone before and they took the time to fine tune it. A lot has changed and here is its current state. It has now turned into a very hit or miss application. The app crashes from taking a depth photo and from that, the photo taken is never saved. Most of the features will crash the app as well. Even switching from different camera lenses will crash the thing. I feel like the company has realized they are at a loss for innovation. They are no longer spending resources on R&D let alone basic maintenance hours. I’m sure we will start to notice less and less updates, until it eventually gets lost among the rest. Please do not waste your money. Wait for them to prove me wrong and make the necessary bug fixes. FYI, A typical active company has two week sprints. At the end of each sprint, an update is pushed to insure continued application maintenance. Feature releases take a lot longer and are usually multiple sprints but bug fixes are not.

  2. 5/5Amazing!

I’m new to IPhone photography and I have an IPhone XR “yes I know the 12 is out “ but that’s not an option for me right now lol. I poured over review after review on which camera app was best for me as a beginner and was instantly drawn to Halide even though I was Nervous I wouldn’t understand how to use it. I went back-and-forth for about a week and all of a sudden the mark two announcement was made. I took that as a sign since Halide had already been out for a bit. With only a couple days using the app I have to say I feel like it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made on the App Store. The ability have the raw, JPEG and the mixed image is amazing Because it gives beginners the ability to actually see the difference side-by-side. The UI is very clean elegant and calm and very much appreciated by a noob like myself. I’m still in my Trial period but my photos look amazing and I cannot stop taking pictures lol. Super excited to edit some of my raw photos this evening. To all my newbies out there who may be in a position like I was where you want the best quality but you also need it to be cost effective and future proof you will not regret Halide . Ben, Sebastiaan,Rebecca, Thank you for a beautiful product and Cheers to you all.

  3. 3/5Such a frustrating App

I’ve just upgraded to Halide mark ii, and I’m remembering now why for the past several years the original halide has just sat unused on my app screen. I should have known when their launch “novel” included a paragraph or two in their new fonts they designed. Design seems to be a big deal for the folks at Lux, although it’s obvious they subscribe to the Form over Function school, when it comes to that discipline. The user is met with a dizzying array of beautifully rendered, meaningless icons, hidden control screens, and misnamed features (Instant RAW is just a processed HEIF, as is MAX mode). Ive spent way too much time just trying to get this thing to export a RAW file today.. which I always assumed was the point of RAW programs like this. Finally, there is something seriously wrong with the exposure algorithm they are using.. often in manual mode you are met with a control box (like apple’s exp/focus) just begging you to touch it. Wow to the fool who does .. as you’ll watch watch your image burn to solid white (regardless of what you touched) and manual controls become futile. Slide open one of the hidden screens, you’ll find the program has switched to auto but has locked the iso to “max”.. your only recourse is to switch to manual and reset everything. That’s just for starters. I’m giving this program a 3 because it is capable, and you know...that font... but it’s the hottest mess I’ve seen in a very long time. I hope they get busy and clean it up.

  4. 3/5Good Interface but Buggy

I am on Halide’s trial. I love the interface. I really think that the interface AND the macro mode are the biggest strengths of this app (I’m on an iPhone 14 Pro). I love being able to change formats, choose raw + jpeg right there on the main screen, and I also love to adjust exposure compensation with a swipe up or down. Unfortunately whenever ProRaw is used there’s a bigger delay than what we get on the native iPhone camera. It doesn’t matter if it’s 12 MP or 48 MP, the native camera allows you to shoot back-to-back shots faster, and that’s important for me (as I do a lot of street or documentary photography). Also. The volume up button is supposed to work as shutter release, but it’s buggy and sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t. I’ve found auto-focus to be also a problem. It doesn’t auto-recognize faces as the native camera does and will often focus on objects that are closer instead. When in manual mode the controls are a bit confusing, it’s hard to change speed only without messing with ISO… I wish there was a shutter priority mode. Oh… and manual mode doesn’t work on 48 MP captures. I honestly would not mind paying for the subscription if what I mentioned here is fixed - the autofocus problems, the delay between proraw shots, the volume up shutter, a more intuitive manual mode or shutter priority mode. As it is now I think I’ll continue using the native camera.

  5. 2/5Bait and switch business model, just buy pro cam

I purchased Halide when it was a full priced app with no subscription. The developer has transitioned to a subscription model including spamming existing customers constantly to upgrade either with a monthly fee for an app with no ongoing costs or an exorbitant price far greater than anything it competes with. Don't reward this behavior and shift in App Store monetization. Just buy pro cam instead. Update to developer response: it is not the same as it was before. It now contains a persistent annoying nag/ad to upgrade to a subscription. I’ve seen this nag at least 10 times from various pop ups, and my experience has been degraded from such. I will not subscribe to an app that is not providing live server functionality on principle so the nags themselves make the app worse. I do not want advertising in the apps I use. That is why I paid for a license. I would update my review to 4 stars, only taking one off for excluding my perpetual license from new features, if it were possible to opt out of all buttons that may pop up with update prompts. I understand the position that Apple puts you in, but I do not accept the business model of perpetual subscriptions for local apps - not do I feel I can trust the very expensive options to purchase a perpetual license, because I already did! Even if I ignore the exorbitant price, how can I trust purchasing a second perpetual license will actually be perpetual given that purchasing the first has put me in this position?

At long last, we're excited to share a preview of Halide Mark III! Inside Halide, tap the "3" button to try out the new experience and see where things are headed. New features include: * HDR in Process Zero * Our film-simulation engine * Our first new look, "Chroma Noir" * Adjustable Aspect Ratios * Tone Editing * Shutter Priority and ISO Priority * New focal lengths in Process Zero That said, this is still just a preview, and Mark III work is still in progress. Designs are incomplete, we're still bringing features over from the old version of Halide, and you should expect plenty of bugs. Luckily, you can switch back to Mark II at any time if you find the experience too hot to handle. Why release it now? Even in its rough state, we could use your feedback. Hop into our Discord, or just email [email protected], to let us know how to improve. It's taken a year to get to this point. With the hard parts of the rewrite done, we can't wait to show you even more cool new stuff in the months ahead! - Ben

After 18 months of work, we’re excited to present Halide Mark III: the most powerful camera and photo lab for iPhone. We built Mark III with to render the most beautiful photos possible from an iPhone, and provide more of a "Batteries Included" experience. There’s only so much space in App Store release notes, so we can only scratched the surface of everything new in Mark III. For a deep dive, check out our blog at Lux.camera! THE LOOKS We’ve partnered with acclaimed Hollywood Colorist Cullen Kelly to develop a set of gorgeous “Looks” for Halide Mark III. Every look serves a specific purpose. Every look is a banger. * VALENCIA: For landscapes and cityscapes, but it also has interesting effects on portraiture and skin tones. It features thick contrast, deep saturation, and solid color separation. * REMBRANDT: Our portrait look, where thick contrast in the mid-tones emphasizes bone structure and lighting. Abundant color in the low end converges to white as exposure increases, for perfect uniformity in skin-tones to emphasize contour of the face. * ZEPHYR: Our most subtle and restrained look. Zephyr features subtle filmic contrast, paired with rich skin tones and foliage. It has the character of a traditional print, but its neutral tone scale and tuned contrast make it a great choice for a wide variety of scenes and visual intents. * CHROMA NOIR: Developed in-house, Chroma Noir is a panchromatic black-and-white look with medium contrast. All looks are included with Halide Mark III. THE PHOTO LAB We built Mark III to deliver awesome results straight out of camera, but we know development is as important of a creative choice as the photo itself. That’s why Mark III features its own development tool, the Photo Lab. You can tell that the Photo lab was designed to be fast and intuitive from the first moment you open it, as we present you with the "Quick Edit" pane. With a tap, you can audition different Looks. With a swipe you can change tabs, adjusting your photo’s framing, color balance, and film simulations. A REFRESHED CAMERA DESIGN A design goal of Mark III was to streamline the experience, making it easier to access the most important tools of photography, all while maintaining that Halide look and feel. One of the most important choices you can make when taking a photo is around composition, so we put those tools front and center in the toolbar. We've chosen aspect ratios that match the most popular film cameras: 35mm (3:2), medium format (1:1), and pano (65:24). We also have a dynamic aspect ratio for Instagram, which changes depending on landscape or portrait. Mark III features an updated composition overlay. Of course it includes the rule of thirds, but we've added a uniform grid, the golden ratio, and rabatment of the rectangle. We’ve also added new exposure tools, such as Shutter Priorty and ISO Priority capture. WORKS WIWTH STANDALONE CAMERA RAWS As we developed Mark III, we realized we wanted to be able to apply Halide Photo Lab to the same photos that come from our big, standalone cameras. Now you can. Inside our image gallery, you can import RAWs from the following formats: - DNG (iPhone, Leica) - CR2 (Canon) - CR3 (Canon) - NEF (Nikon) - RAF (Fujifilm) - ARW (Sony) - FFF (Hasselblad) FEEDBACK AND SUPPORT This is just the beginning, and we’d love your input to hear where we go next. You can drop us a line at [email protected], or chat on our official Discord. Thank you for your amazing support. — Team Halide

  • 3.1.0

Welcome to Halide 3.1! This update includes a bunch of enhancements from our big 3.0 we launched six weeks ago. Let's dig in. SCARLET For more warmth, richness, and medium-high contrast try our new "Scarlet" look. It features high saturations, particularly around reds. Try it with summer sunsets! MORE FRAME CONTROLS In the "Frame" tab of the editor, you can now rotate and flip your photo, and even make perspective corrections-- perfect for architecture shots. COMPRESSION CONTROL We've added a capture setting to tweak the exact level of compression to apply. This is great for finding the right balance between texture and file size. EXPOSURE BIAS RESET We've added a button in our exposure menu to reset exposure bias to zero. There's also a long-press shortcut. When in manual mode, instead of resetting the bias, This feature re-meters exposure. ALWAYS-ON FOCUS TOOLS In 3.0, focus tools were only enabled when adjust focus. With 3.1, you can just leave them on all the time when in manual focus mode. RAW-ONLY LOOK You can now enable a "RAW-Only" mode within capture settings. This enables a specific look that does not save a JPEG. Because RAWs can render dramatically different in other apps, we recommend you only enable this feature if you know what you're getting into. EXPOSURE/FOCUS LOCK When in manual focus or manual exposure, tapping the viewfinder will not adjust either setting. There's other small polish improvements and bug fixes. If we missed something, let us know in our Discord or send us an email at [email protected]. We ready every message! -- Team Halide
