1. 5/5Excellent App for Learning a Foreign Language

   I highly recommend Babbel for anyone who’s looking to learn a foreign language in a methodical, structured manner. I opted for a lifetime subscription, and I think that it’s totally worth the money. I started with Italian about nine months ago and I think that I’ve progressed pretty well and feel confident when I practice with native Italian speakers. Having already learned Japanese, Thai, and Spanish as foreign languages in a university classroom setting, I can say that Babbel’s lessons and content do an excellent job in providing language learners building block with which to build their language skills and synthesize new sentences independently. I’ll be honest — learning a foreign always requires dedication and consistent, daily practice. No app or teaching method out there will make a person fluent in a foreign language unless that individual practices and tries to use the language everyday. Babbel structures the courses and review sessions in a way that makes it relatively easy to learn new vocab and grammar points each day, while building on content from prior lessons. I also appreciate the supplementary materials that the Babbel team created, namely their language-immersion podcast “La Bottega di Babbel” and their numerous language and culture articles. I look forward to learning other languages on Babbel and highly encourage others to use this app!

2. 5/5Super Intuitive!

   I love that this exists. You can learn at your own pace as the app guides you through or you can do it your own way. They give you all the lessons and categories that you can skip around on depending on what you want to learn. The goal setting and tracking, helps to keep you learning. NOTE: This WILL NOT work if you don’t make an effort to do at least an exercise a day. Sometimes the tracker doesn’t always seem to update properly, which has affected my streak. That’s can be annoying, but I like that I get 2 streak freezes on Monday, so I don’t always have to learn over the weekend. I am learning Polish, it is a super difficult language and it seems that some of the sentence structure or phrases are a little outdated. The variety of phrases and vocabulary available to practice and sort through (make your own flash card categories) is really amazing! Very helpful to practice and use what you already know. I love that you practice listening, speaking, flashcards, and writing through each lesson, but you can also pick which category you would like to review out of the 4 to hone in whatever you’re struggling with or want to test yourself on. I like that the lessons are not very long and that this app is constantly being updated to work better and perform better for its users. I have not used any other language app. I bought the life subscription when it was on sale. Best purchase I could have ever made!

   This app is amazing!!! I’m learning French, which as you probably know is not the easiest language to learn. I’ve used other language apps such as Rosetta Stone and Duolingo, but Babble is by far the best!! A big factor for me especially when learning something like a language is the aesthetic of the app and/or website. I love the appearance of the Babble site! It’s a nice, calming, chill aesthetic ideal for language learning! Babble also provides many different ways of learning the same language! You can listen, write, speak, and even use digital flash cards of words and phrases. Babble provides you with daily vocabulary reviews, and keeps you motivated by giving you a learning streak. You can take your time with Babble. I don’t feel pressured to go fast and do a bunch of lessons. The lessons are short, the longest taking 30mins to complete. Similar to other language apps, Babble uses pictures to help you visually learn words and phrases. It divides your learning based on your knowledge of the language. For example, I started learning French a month ago, so Babble put me at Newcomer level 1. When you sign up you can select what level of learning you’re at, and let them know your goals.(learning to fluency, writing the language, grammar, speaking) Overall, Babble is a fantastic app!! 4. 5/5Recommend Lifetime Subscription if you can afford it.

   I recently started hanging out in a Spanish speaking Latino community and decided it would be good to learn español to communicate with them better. After briefly considering a class at a community college, I decided an app would be better for learning at my own pace. I read several reviews of language apps before making a decision and Babbel came highly rated as the one with the most educational pedagogy behind it, as opposed to DuoLingo which is cartoony and gamified. Upon creating my account and selecting a membership option I noticed an option for a lifetime subscription and selected it after mathing it out. At $299 it covers the cost of the yearly plan for 3 years and then you have it for the remainder of your earthly existence, or 100 years, whichever comes first. I have been very happy with my decision so far as I feel I have made more progress in a few weeks than several quarters of Spanish 101 & 102 back in college. With the lifetime subscription I may even venture into another language once I’m comfortable with Spanish. Having native speakers to converse with is also helpful. I have one minor complaint about the latest update. The notification badge on the practice tab used to display the number of practice items, but is now just an orange dot. Could an option to display the number be added back in please? Otherwise I am very happy with the product so far.

5. 4/5Bounced back & forth but great again

   Update: They finally made the font bigger! Also, less redundant “continue” buttons & timing glitches seem vastly improved. Thank you so much for these fixes! For the longest time Babbel was great. Then about a month ago they made some horrible & unnecessary changes. They vastly shrunk the font with no option in settings to adjust it (as someone that is visually impaired this is a HUGE problem for me), redundant “Continue” buttons between every little thing that severely slow down the flow of the lessons and glitches throughout that take numerous seconds to assess your answers, where it used to be instant. I complained about this at the time and was overjoyed when they seemed to listen to all the very valid complaints they were getting & went back to their previous and far superior model. Unfortunately, I see today they they have brought those horrid changes back, which tells me that someone in their crumbling organization is going to insist on keeping them. What a tremendous disappointment Babbel has become. I hate it so much now that when I bother to try another lesson I rush through it, reading as little of the tiny print as possible so as not to get too angry. Honestly, I would pay extra to use the previous version...If you don’t have the app yet, at least look somewhere else first so these people are not rewarded for a job poorly done. If you have Babbel then you must be frustrated too and I encourage you to write your own scathing review and try to bring back the Babbel we all knew and loved.

   During the speaking exercises it cannot hear you and either doesn't respond or claims you mispronounced the word. This is NOT a phone issue. Fix this.

   This app has really gone downhill, both in terms of UI/UX and lesson quality. There's always some nonsense with the app, from the AI messing up your speaking exercise, to the space debacle, and now randomly it will throw you to the bottom of the page when youre trying to type. Lessons now are rote and repetitive - you will practice the same 3 phrases, in the same order, over and over. I used to rave about this app, bought a lifetime sub, and now I think I need to look at other options.

   Unlike the green app, doesn't work online, and doesn't really track progress to focus on the weaknesses. Also, voice recognition seems weaker. But I like how they've added some extra hints here and there teaching about the rules of the language.

   Babbel has good content, but the beginner Spanish grammar lessons can feel too confusing. For example it introduces closely related concepts, like different uses of estar for location, mood, and temporary states, too close together before the basic pattern feels natural. I wish the app taught one pattern at a time with more simple repetition, then introduced similar grammar comparisons later.
