1. 5/5Personal favorite language app

   Coming from someone who’s used Duolingo on and off for about as long as it’s existed, and seen its system change time and again over the years, I feel that Busuu’s system has a focus on certain essential ideas of what it means to learn a language that Duolingo has historically struggled with. I’ve been impressed with Busuu has crafted exercises which prioritize the meanings behind words rather than just translating back and forth, and how the community feature directs students to actually express thoughts of their own in the language they’re learning. These are things that the base loop of Duolingo typically fails to integrate, and that new features, only presently available in particular Duolingo courses, have only begun to address. The monetization scheme of Busuu is also something I appreciate, in that there are meaningful features you can get with a subscription, but what you get for free (with ads, to be clear) still feels like a complete and healthy product, and it doesn’t feel like I’m being pushed unnecessarily hard to buy a subscription: this is also something which has frustrated me with Duolingo in recent years, even though free Duolingo is still entirely complete, there are a lot of factors which push very hard in the direction of a subscription. I still use both apps, but Busuu is the one which keeps me better engaged with actually learning a language, and it is the one I would recommend to someone learning a language it supports.

2. 5/5One quick suggestion!

   Okay, so, this app is AMAZING. I have learned more from this app than any other language learning app I’ve tested out. It goes over everything essential first and doesn’t waste time with random vocab, it’s fun without being too gamified, it doesn’t go over past learned words, phrases, or grammar too often nor too little, and best of all it allows you and others to correct the errors of others learning their native language which is WAY more helpful than anyone else gives it credit for. However, I do have a nitpick with this app, which is why I have rated it four stars instead of five, that being that it has no dark mode. I am visually impaired, and bright screens hurt my eyes more than it would the average person. For me, it’s not full clinical photophobia, but it is bad enough that I do have to avoid light screens and such on a daily basis. Usually, I would invert the colors on the screen of my phone while using the app using a triple tap accessibility shortcut I set up on my phone for websites and apps that don’t have a dark mode option, but since I’ve been using this app a lot I’d like an actual dark mode in the app itself because, not only would it help me, but it would also help people who both have it worse than me and better than me, as well as help people who don’t even have visual disabilities in general by helping prevent eye strain and providing better screen readability, as well as just being an option for people who prefer it over light more in general. This should just be basic accessibility everywhere, please do consider adding this. Thank you!!

   I’ve been multilingual from a young age (native English speaker, learned and became fluent in Spanish by 6, and learned and became conversationally fluent in German by 13), and have continued learning languages into my adulthood both through online resources and college courses. Out of every language learning app I’ve ever used, Busuu EASILY takes the cake for the #1 best. I have never learned so much just from an app, nor have I ever learned so quickly. It’s a great supplemental tool alongside more “traditional” methods of learning a new language, but it’s also a FANTASTIC resource for anyone who is brand new to learning a language to get to reading, writing, and even speaking very quickly. I absolutely love the grammar review option, it really makes a difference in learning to actually think in your target language rather than translating in your head, which is what gets you thinking like a native speaker! I also love how Busuu makes it a point to explain *why* a certain phrase is structured the way it is rather than having you just memorize phrases without understanding how they’re structured, leaving you unable to express your own original thoughts in a natural way rather than sounding like a textbook (I’m looking at you, Duolingo). I just really can’t understate how much I love this app, the premium version is 100% worth every penny, this is my second year paying for it. It’s a perfect tool to brush up on languages I already know and dip my toes into new ones.

   I have recommended this app to some of my English students because it's a great way to improve your English. I'm studying French and I love the translated dialogues they have on the ends of many of the units. They use native, non-robotic speakers and speak at a natural pace so you can hear the linking of words. I also enjoy the visuals and how they contextualize all of their wonderful flashcards with sentence examples of the words. I have a few suggestions for improvement. First, they often will throw 3 to 5 complicated rules at you and then have you practice them all at once as if you should have digested all of that info at once. I think they should introduce one rule then have you practice that one and build on that. Also, often there is no audio or translation in many of the activities and I believe that's a big loss to the student. That's one place where duolingo wins out because they are good about that. Also, I'd love more review, so past rules and lessons are woven into the new ones. Also, not a fan of the high pitched ding sound that you can't turn off. Overall very impressed and excited to keep using it. Update: Buusu is my favorite language learning app by far and far surpasses duolingo because more practical language is taught and grammar isn’t ignored. I’m studying Spanish on it now and wish I had a non-Castilian option because I’m looking to communicate with Mexicans and Latin-Americans who don’t use vosotros or that th sound for the s.

5. 5/5Best Language App Out There!

   I just have to say bluntly that this app is incredibly effective and beneficial. No matter the language you are learning, it teaches you actual grammar concepts and how to use them, which I find remarkable. As far as I know, no other language app on the ’App Store’ teaches you a language in that amount of detail. I am learning Japanese on ’Busuu’ and I find it amazingly helpful and effective. I have tried a number of language apps to learn Japanese and apps specific to learning Japanese, and none match the matter of excellence and quality this app brings. I have yet to complete the Japanese course, but I have tried out a few of the last lessons on the Japanese course, and the Japanese they are speaking are actually very advanced, even for English! The dialogue even expects you to know what the people in the text are saying, without Rōmaji! (Rōmaji is the Latin aid of Japanese words. Example: ‘たこ’ is ‘Tako’ in Rōmaji, and ‘Tako’ means octopus in English.) This app really leads you to having an advanced foundation and in some cases, I believe can lead to fluency! I highly recommend this app and have had so much improvement in my Japanese! This app makes you actually ”want” to learn a foreign language and this app makes it easy by giving you bite-sized lessons! I really enjoy this app and am looking forward to seeing what other amazing things I can say and do in other countries, all from the help of this app!
