  1. 5/5Didn’t know I needed it.

Such a great little app. Personally I was fine with the original mobile Reddit and still am but after hearing a friend suggest bacon reader, I was interested because you don’t often come across clients for apps. Especially apps that are extremely customizable and work great like the Reddit app. After some research, however, I found Apollo. You may think that the paywall for premium is excessive but it really isn’t needed and only really adds some extra customizability and the fact that you can pay what you want for premium ($2-10 USD) makes it worth it for me. You can browse faster and comments are so much easier to read. The thing that impressed me the most were the simple things like swiping to upvote, save, or reply. Having the upvote button on the right, being able to save GIFs, having volume in the top left (I know it’s coming in iOS 13 but it’s still neat) and the fact that these features are free makes the app perfect. Personally I don’t post a lot but to me, it seems that the developers spent a lot of time making sure posting was much more intuitive because of the tools the app includes. (almost as good as many pc editing softwares). In addition I experienced faster load times for images and video(GIFs were lacking a little) but in general the app was way smoother and cleaner than the regular app. I really love the app and I don’t think I can go back. The only thing I would change is to add the scheduled light and dark mode to the free version because this feature is included in the original Reddit app.

  2. 5/5Much better than the original app.

Apollo has so many more features and options compared to Reddit’s app. Options to use a dedicated search bar from within the hidden posts section as well as from within my saved content for that one particular thing I’d want to share later make saving so much more meaningful. Combine those features with the ability to customize short swipe and long swipe gestures, and I get a much more seamless browsing experience than anything the original app currently has to offer. I can engage with a post and comment thread so much faster and just as quickly scroll through to the next post that catches my eye. And when I come back to the app, because I can easily swipe to hide previously seen posts, my feed is never cluttered with content that I’ve already interacted with. Stellar developer communication and constant app updates is the icing on top. About every couple of months a new feature, quality of life update, new app theme, or community-made app icon pack comes out. I love that I have variety even in something small like the app icon just to keep things looking fresh even before opening the app. And if the community has a request, the developer is quick to respond.

  3. 5/5Great app! Amazing on iPhone and iPad - Needs better support on M* Laptops

So this app is fantastic. I pay yearly for ultra as reddit is really the only social media site I'm on anymore outside of Mastodon. The experience on iPad and iPhone is absolutely flawless. Rarely is there a bug and when there is you can contact the dev through the app or through /r/apolloapp on reddit and he's very responsive and will attempt to work through the bug with you. This is the best spiritual successor to the previous top reddit app which was alien blue. That app was acquired by reddit to create their current app. The period between reddit's acquisition of alien blue and the release of Apollo were the dark times. There just weren't any great alternatives to alien blue, and I tried a ton of them. Now on to the criticisms, as I've gushed enough. Maybe about a year or two ago, the experience on my M1 Macbook Pro was fantastic! No real complaints. An update completely ruined scolling though. Whereas most Mac apps allow for scrolling that's very fluid and literally slides the page up and down and will continue that movement when there's some momentum to the scoll, Apollo somehow removed this very fluid scrolling. Now it doesn't detect and momentum and the page instantly stops scrolling as soon as your finger leaves the trackpad. If the dev could fix that it would be a pretty good experience on my M1 mac. I luckily don't have the issues that other reviewers stated they experience with their M* Macbooks. Long story short, buy apollo app! It's worth the price of admission. If you're on a Macbook M* device, probably still get it but be aware that it may not work as perfectly as it does on your iPhone or iPad.

  4. 5/5Absolutely Stellar App, Developer is 🔥

Apollo is by far the most-used app on my phone (and now I have the ScreenTime reports to prove it). It is orders of magnitude better than the “official” reddit app and is superior in every way. It is fast and smooth and packed with features. I especially love that I can pick the theme I want, change the icon, and remove ads! The thing I hated most about the official app was the ads that were disguised as legitimate posts and with Apollo that’s all gone! I bought the Pro upgrade months ago to gain access to additional features and it was one of the few in-app purchases I have never regretted or felt like wasn’t worth the cost. Today the developer released an update adding a bunch of new features that require a very reasonable (seems underpriced to be honest) monthly subscription, and like a true bro he has the option to unlock it for life with a onetime purchase! I hate monthly and even yearly subscriptions so I especially appreciated this option. All that by itself should convince you that this app is worth it, but the thing that really seals the deal is the developer. He is amazing. Super active with feedback and very open in his communication about the status of the app’s development and requested features.

  5. 5/5The best Reddit app there is, no doubt about it.

Apollo is simply perfect, and you don’t really realize how many features you wanted in a Reddit app until you use Apollo. I used RiF for years and thought I really liked it, and when I made the switch to iOS about a year ago I was annoyed that I had to give it up. I tried 3 different apps on iOS before finally giving Apollo a shot, and that was that. It’s heaven compared to all of its competitors. Swipe to upvote/downvote/save/reply along with haptic feedback is so convenient to use that I find myself engaging in comments far more than I did previously (there’s something so satisfying about that little “bzzt”). The ability to map your own gestures for different actions within the app is awesome too. On top of all that, it’s just a beautiful, sleek looking app that was clearly designed by someone who knows their stuff when it comes to UX. Apollo also has its own subreddit, and Christian the sole developer is very active in it and is constantly adding features requested there. He’s a solid dude. Do yourself a favor and try it even if you think you love your current app. I can promise that you won’t regret it.

This update to Apollo brings the ability to save posts and comments to specific categories (so you can sort by your “tech”, “animals”, or "interior design", for instance, and even create completely custom categories) that are cloud-synced across your devices! There's also incredibly gorgeous new icons, and a bunch of new Pixel Pals (parrot, panda, platypus, and a tiger!) so you can have even more cute options for friends while you scroll, as well as some handy bug fixes (like around trending subreddits) and tweaks to make everything even nicer and smoother. This version also adds inline thumbnails to inline images in comments, plus a few to the saved category banner that could sometimes not disappear, and also added the option to turn off saved categories if you're not interested in the new feature.

Hey! This update has a bunch of awesome additions, I really hope you love it! # New Comments Highlightifier (May need to enable under Settings tab > General > Show Unread Comments) If you read a thread, and then encounter it again later, in your feed Apollo will show a count of how many comments have been added since you last viewed it, and when viewing the thread, it will highlight the new comments. This is really handy for coming back to a thread later and seeing what you missed out on. # Easter Sale Just for this short Easter period you can grab Apollo Ultra lifetime at a discounted rate! ## Richer Title Flair Some subreddits elect to have images and icons in their title flair to better represent a specific flair (like "Happy News" with a smiley face or something), and before Apollo would just show this as a text approximation (for instance,), now the imagery is fully rendered right into the title! # New Icons Some of my favorite new home screen icons in awhile. Featuring an absolutely gorgeous set of icons by Adam Whitcroft, an adorable Easter themed icon by Matthew Skiles, and a really cool, kinda spooky icon by s4pete. # New Pixel Pals Added three adorable new Pixel Pals! We have a T-Rex named Rory, Freya the Butterfly, and Kermy the Borzoi. # Other - No longer supports iOS 14. iOS 14 has had miniscule usage in Apollo for awhile now, and as of recently it dipped to well below 1% of users, so this version requires iOS 15 or newer. Having a newer baseline iOS version means devs are able to use newer iOS features (for instance every year there's really awesome advancements to SwiftUI) that make development easier/faster - Revamped the Settings screens a little, in addition to how it looks I also moved the Themes option into the "Appearance" section to reduce confusion - New icons - Should fix bug with home feed showing same old content from when you were signed out - If you select a paid feature Apollo now prompts you to unlock Ultra. This is an attempt to simplify because of confusion around the dual offerings (Pro and Ultra) in Apollo, where it'll hopefully be more simple/obvious what to unlock if you simply want everything in the app, which is better for most users than "buy this, then this". (Pro is still available to purchase though and can be done so through Settings) - Changed the icon for "Best" sort, firstly to somewhat commemorate a change in how the Best algorithm works in Apollo, and secondly because it's the primary sort icon that Apollo users are exposed to, and I've had a ton of feedback over the years that the trophy icon is not at all clear for "tap this to sort" - Open in Apollo Safari extension now works properly with old Reddit as well - If you have the option enabled to automatically collapse AutoModerator, Apollo will now properly collapse the comment even if it's not stickied - Revamped the live comment sort a little, so it should be faster and work even better - Exclude Subscriptions from Feed now works not only with r/All, but with r/Popular as well - Related to the previous item, added an option in Settings to always enable subscribed subreddit exclusion from r/All and r/Popular, so you don't have to manually enable it each time - Fixed a bug with Wikipedia preview parsing for non-English languages # Thank You I really hope you enjoy the update! Thank you for using Apollo! - Christian

This update for Apollo includes a few important features: - Apollo closes on June 30th, if you have time left in your subscription, this update allows you to decline a refund on the remaining subscription time. If you don't decline the refund, you will automatically receive a pro-rated refund for the remaining time. If you've been happy with the service I've provided over the years, please consider declining the refund as they are refunded out-of-pocket. I thank you! - Added a "Goodbye Apollo" Wallpaper set. If you want to remember Apollo for years to come after its shut down date, and support its creator one last time, consider checking out the incredible set of Apollo themed wallpapers, created by talented designers who have built Apollo icons over the years. - I've unlocked all the icons in the app for everyone, and even added over a dozen new ones that I had planned to continue adding over the next year plus. Also themes are now available for all. I have another update coming for the end of the month that adds some additional cool features, so stick around and keep browsing until the curtain closes! If you're unclear about why Apollo is closing, Reddit recently announced some very, very expensive API prices for developers, and in combination with only providing 30 days to enact the changes, Apollo won't be able to afford continuing beyond Reddit's cutoff date of June 30th, 2023. There are more details in the ApolloApp subreddit if you're curious. As mentioned through the in-app announcements, it's been the pleasure of a lifetime building Apollo for you over the last 9 years. I thank you so much for your kindness, input, and generosity over the years. - Christian

Pushes out a few more fixes before everything closes down! - Adds ability to migrate your Apollo Pixel Pals to the new separate Pixel Pals app, and even includes a fun easter egg if you do so. If you're not familiar with Pixel Pals, it's a really fun app that lets you customize your iOS device with a variety of cute virtual pets. It'd really mean a lot to me if you checked it out and considered supporting it! - Added a bunch more wallpapers to the "Goodbye Apollo" Wallpaper Set. It's available in Settings, and is a great way to remember Apollo for years to come with some incredible wallpapers by the amazing designers who have created Apollo's icons over the years. - If you have time left on your subscription, you have the option to go to the Settings tab and decline the automatic refund. Developers pay refunds out-of-pocket, so your kindness and consideration would mean a lot to me there given how unexpected the last few weeks have been. Cancelling your subscription in the Settings app isn't enough, you also have to manually decline the refund in Apollo if you so choose. As the hour gets closer the app will change automatically to no longer being able to browse Reddit, but you'll still be able to open it and customize the home screen app icons with the over 100 incredible icons added over the years. Pixel Pals migration, wallpapers, merch, and more are also available, as well as the possibility of another fun easter egg revealing itself. I feel like I've said it a lot over the last few weeks, but I feel so, so fortunate that I've been able to build an app over the last 9 years alongside such an incredible community who helped me to shape the app for the better. I've met and talked with so many cool people, and the app is infinitely better than it was from the outset because of it. I'm heartbroken it's ending this way, but I've loved every minute of building this app for you folks and wouldn't have done a thing differently. Love y'all. - Christian
