  1. 5/5An excellent app from a dedicated developer

I downloaded Narwhal in April of 2016, and I dont think I have gone more than a week without using it since then. The developer is a one man shop who has worked very hard to overcome some of Reddit’s recent decisions so he can continue to offer this app that I and many others rely on. Reddit has forced all 3rd party apps to pay for their API usage. If a subscription is not an option for you, you can use the official reddit app or a web browser. Personally, I would rather not do either of those things, since I find the interface and constant ads very annoying. I can afford to pay the subscription and a bit more to support this developer. I understand not everyone is able to do that, but please, if that is the case, direct your anger toward the bone-headed exectives at reddit, not this developer, who has no control over the situation. Det0ur, I hope for your mental health you are staying out of the reviews, but if you do read this, I want to thank you for all you have done to bring us this excellent app. Do not be discouraged by the hate, know that you are appreciated.

  2. 5/5Finally progress!

Narwhal 1 was a great app but it had so many quirks and bugs and the dev rarely fixed them because he was spending all his time on Narwhal 2. For years he got to enjoy this app and pretty much no one else could. Then Reddit cracked down on the API usage and pretty much forced the dev to make changes and finally release this app. I hate subscriptions but I’m so glad he was essentially forced to finally release this major update. The app is so much better now! The dev is very responsive at fixing things now and I think it’s well worth the cost! There are so many 1 star reviews here that either don’t understand the subscription (not the devs fault, blame Reddit) or they are mad that Apollo no longer works and they are expecting this app to be exactly the same as that one. People are too lazy to spend the time going through the options to customize the app the way they want. With that said, just give the app a try and and go through all the options. If you invest the time you can make this app perfect for your needs and if something is missing, request it! Don’t complain and leave bad reviews!

  3. 5/5Actually good

I was quite skeptical about this app going in, since most of the previous Reddit app alternatives have been lacking and have now gone defunct. However, there is a clear reason why this one has stuck around—it's actually good. Just about every issue I had with this app had a solution in the settings, or some way to do it that I didn't notice at first. It still does have some small quirks and issues that I hope they will iron out in future updates, but it's far superior to the official Reddit app and has far fewer problems; nothing dealbreaking for me. The only downside is that the app settings are a bit tricky to navigate since it's so customizable, and a tad on the advanced side. It will definitely take you a day or two to get the settings the way you want them to be. It IS a subscription app, which is not super great, but it's well worth it for the amount they've clearly put into it to make it good. So I'm happy to pay these devs for what they're worth, and frankly they probably deserve more!

  4. 5/5So much customization!

Coming from iAlien (which I was very happy with) was kinda weird. The menu bar being on the right than the left was hard to get used to also. BUT as time went on the app gained more traction and more customization options kept being added. Things like what happens to a video or post when force touching (for force touch compatible devices) or what icon you prefer to use. Dark and light mode with a single tap! No going through settings to change the mode when viewing at night or day. The font you read can be changed. Literally almost everything can be changed to your liking. You can even hide certain menu options that you find yourself never using at all. Hopefully one day they add an option to switch the menu tab from the right to left lol. Recently a new tab was added called recently viewed and my goodness I did not know how much I actually would use that tab. I always find posts I find interesting but forget to save it and wouldn’t be able to find it later. Now I just go to that tab and it’s there! It’s super useful.

  5. 5/5Intuitive, streamlined, like RES for mobile

I've tried them all: redditisfun, bacon reader, the official app, and none compare to Narwhal. First a lot of things function in gestures. Swipe left to up vote and swipe more left to down vote. Swipe right to save a post or reply to a comment and more right to access other options. To go back or forward just swipe the page left or right. Pull from the left to bring up the customizable menu. It also supports the 3D touch so you can hard press to preview the post or thread (your choice in the settings). Comments, threads, and chains are collapsible with a touch. You can set it up to hide posts after you view them. I think this is on by default and can be a bit alarming if you aren't expecting it. Don't worry, if you want to go back and look at it again, you can go into your recently viewed through the menu. You can also unhide the post. There are ads I'm the free version but if I recall they are just banners and sponsored posts. I paid the $4 to remove these because I like to support developers and especially ones who do the one and done pay model. No subscription, you just pay once and you're good. The developers are just doing this on the side as a sort of passion project. Along with the no ads, the premium gives you more customizing options. I'm not sure which ones are under the pay wall because I paid after like a day. But my husband hasn't paid on his phone and the app is perfectly usable without it. And there's also a night mode which is available in the free version.

There are currently some awesome new features in the works, but for now here are some fixes: - Fixes issue where certain GIFs would not have audio available - Fixes issue with the "Open in Narwhal" share extension no longer working - Fixes issue where audio does not stop when hiding a big preview post Please come visit /r/narwhalapp and post any feedback or feature requests you may have!

  • 2024.11

We are finishing out the year with a few bug fixes to address some issues from recent Reddit changes. Our plan is to get some awesome new features out in early 2025. Here are the updates: - Changes Random, My Random, and other random options to all work locally on device, because Reddit shut down these API features. This also means that My Random will now work for everyone without the need of Reddit Premium. For Random, we generated a list of the top 5,000 subreddits and that is used to pick one to display. - Adds setting to hide post flairs (Settings > Posts) - Adds a few new app icons - Fixes youtube videos playing in the wrong language in some cases - Fixes issue where user flair would be shown on posts when the hide user flair setting is on. Please come visit /r/narwhalapp and post any feedback or feature requests you may have!

Here are the updates: - Narwhal now has a new default app icon with more color! The icon should have automatically changed back to the previous dark icon so as to not disrupt what you are used to. If you'd like to change the icon, please go to Settings > App Icons - Changes Random, My Random, and other random options to all work locally on device, because Reddit shut down these API features. This also means that My Random will now work for everyone without the need of Reddit Premium. • 2024.9

The 9th update of 2024 has some awesome features focused on improving GIFs and Videos. New: - GIFs/Videos in Big Preview Mode will only start playing when they are mostly on screen. No more scrolling and seeing GIFs that are already halfway done playing! - Settings (including themes!) are now synced to your iCloud account so that if you get a new device or have to re-install, everything will still be customized to your liking. - Adds setting to automatically unmute GIFs/videos in Big Preview mode as you scroll in Settings > Posts - Adds favorites button as an option for the action bar - Adds setting to control mute behavior on GIF posts - App icons will now respond correctly to dark mode. I also added a new orangered and new blue icon. - Adds setting to control the gesture for how comments are collapsed: single tap, double tap, two finger tap, or disabled altogether Improved: - When opening a GIF/Video from Big Preview Mode, the post will show the GIF/Video at the same place on the timeline. For those of you who may not like this behavior, there is now a setting to always start GIFs/Videos from the beginning in Settings > Posts - GIFs and videos that are unmuted in Big Preview mode will stay un-muted when you open the post Fixed: - Fixes issue where iOS dictation would insert a weird character that is displayed on reddit.com - Changed some icons for the action bar to ensure continuity in the visual style - Fixes issue where placeholders would be shown with thumbnails turned off We have so much more planned. Please feel free to come by /r/narwhalapp and share your feedback!

Search in comments is here! We have a lot more in the works, but wanted to get these new features in your hands as quickly as possible: - Search for text in comments (and comment authors) using the new "Find in Comments" feature! You will find it in the ... menu or you can add it to your action bar for posts. It will even auto expand comments that you may have collapsed, which include the search phrase. - Translate Reddit content! There is now a translate option in the all menu for comments, long press menu for self post text, and the long press menu for post titles. (Only on iOS 18 and higher). The translate option will show up when content is in another language from the preferred language of your device. - Mute inbox notifications for posts from the ... menu or by long pressing on a post title - Mute inbox notifications for comments from the All swipe action or ... menu - Adds setting to mark posts as read after upvoting/downvoting in Settings > Posts - Automatically upvote posts & comments when saving. Turn this on with two new settings in Settings > Posts and Settings > Comments - Instead of seeing "img" in comments that have image emotes, there will now be a link to view the emote - Adds "Copy Text" option to the context menu when long pressing a post title Bug Fixes: - Fixes an issue that would cause certain Youtube videos to not load - Fixes rare crash that could happen when loading a subreddit - Fixes another rare crash that could happen when opening Narwhal Please come visit /r/narwhalapp and post any feedback or feature requests you may have!

The redesigned album/gallery experience is here! We have a few more improvements as well for this release. Stay tuned for moderator tools and other improvements in our next major release. Here is everything new in 2025.3: - We rebuilt albums & galleries from scratch to feature horizontal scrolling similar to the Photos app. Quickly scroll through each photo and tap to enter full screen where you can keep scrolling between photos! - For those of you who prefer the original vertical album user interface, we added a setting in Settings > Post Content to use the original UI - Content Filters now have a settings section. Within you will find the following two new settings: "Do not ask to confirm when adding a filter" and "Deactivate filters". The latter is for when you want to temporarily deactivate your filters to load content as if you didn't have any. Then you can turn the setting back off and your filters are back! - RedGifs changed their API to require video embeds instead of directly showing the video. All RedGifs will now load as a web page embed. Please let us know if you have any issues loading content! - New multi account settings section in Settings > General with two new settings: "Auto refresh home feed when switching accounts" and "Reset app when switching accounts". When on, the accounts list will be dismissed and the app will go back to the home screen. - Shows a lock icon next to post titles for locked posts. Please come visit /r/narwhalapp and post any feedback or feature requests you may have!

  • 2025.4

We heard that many of you are unhappy with the RedGifs changes. Unfortunately, RedGifs has changed their API which forced these changes on Narwhal. However, we were able to make some quick improvments: - Defaults to using the Narwhal video player for RedGifs in Big Preview mode. However, this means that those videos will no longer have audio. If you prefer audio with your RedGifs, there is a new setting in Settings > Posts to prefer the RedGifs embedded video player. - There is a similar setting for how to load RedGifs when opening a post. By default, it uses the RedGifs embedded video player, but you can turn it off to use the old video player, however there will be no audio. - Using the progress bar for RedGifs in big preview mode should be much easier now - Automatically defaults RedGifs to HD - When opening a RedGifs post, it will auto unmute if your "Unmute GIFs in Posts" setting is set to "Always"

Narwhal now has support for iOS 26! We added liquid glass throughout the app and we will be adding more over time. We also made these changes: - The column widths on iPad are now resizable by tapping on the divider and dragging - Fixes issue where the action bar would sometimes show up on top of a message thread - Fixes issue where cancelling a forward navigation swipe would prevent that view from being shown from a subsequent forward swipe Please come visit /r/narwhalapp and post any feedback or feature requests you may have!

It's liquid glass time! For those of you running iOS 26, Narwhal now features a sleek new look built with liquid glass. We've worked to tastefully introduce Apple's new design language throughout the app while keeping the Narwhal ethos and core feeling intact. - Action Bar: Now uses liquid glass buttons and groups for your actions. Buttons placed next to each other share a single glass container. Empty buttons become transparent space, letting content show through. (iOS 26 only) - Navigation Bar: The top navigation bar is now fully transparent, just like Apple's core apps on iOS 26. Content fades out subtly as you scroll. (iOS 26 only) - Side Menu: Narwhal's signature side menu now has a stunning new liquid glass design. (iOS 26 only) - Sort Options: Subreddit and user profile sort bars are now buttons in the top-right corner. The sort button appears to the left of any other top-right buttons you've configured (iOS 26 only). Prefer the old style? Two new settings let you show the sort bar on scroll, just like in iOS 18: "Show sort bar instead of top-right sort button" in Settings > Posts and Settings > User Profiles - Many additional interface elements now use liquid glass, including the overflow (...) menu and the markdown keyboard. (iOS 26 only) - Added a setting to use your theme's primary accent color for liquid glass buttons. (iOS 26 only) - Added a setting to move the iPad post list from the left side to the right side. (iOS 26 only) - Updated ad block list for web posts. Please let us know if you encounter any issues with ads. - The side menu is much more responsive. You can start scrolling immediately while any animations are still running. Bug Fixes: - Blue boxes no longer appear around posts on iPad. - Fixed issue with certain comments being truncated when using larger fonts. - Fixed videos displaying at incorrect sizes on initial load. - Fixed issue where the action bar could appear on top of a message thread. - Fixed issue where canceling a forward navigation swipe prevented that view from appearing on the next attempt. Please come visit /r/narwhalapp and post any feedback or feature requests you may have!
