Communication Apps
Definition
The message that matters is the one that arrives when the other person is in a basement with one bar. Communication apps carry calls, texts, and files between people you already know — phone numbers, work handles, or a small group thread. They are not social networks: there is no public feed to perform for. End-to-end claims, SMS fallback, and whether a call works on data-only SIMs are the facts that decide the pick. A sticker pack is not a messenger. If the product needs a phone number you do not want to give, that is a constraint, not a footnote.
Common tasks
- Place a voice or video call on mobile data
- Send a photo or document in a thread
- Mute a group without leaving it
- Move a conversation from SMS to an encrypted chat
Common constraints
- The other person must be on the same network or a bridge
- End-to-end often excludes backups and desktop search
- Work tenants can retain messages after you delete them
