  1. 3/5Really good, but white app icon

This app makes it really easy to make ssh connections on iOS. It does have a few shortcomings though. The SFTP implementation doesn’t support folders, so if you want to upload or download a whole directory, you have to zip it first. It also treats the keyboard weirdly. You can tap the screen to “put away” your keyboard, which disables input from the hardware keyboard. Useful for on-screen keyboard users, I guess, but annoying for the rest of us. When setting up a new connection, the little menu inside the text field constantly disappears before you can tap it, so you have to use cmd-v if you’re pasting a password or something. I am very disappointed in the new white app icon. White app icons are very ugly, and because almost every app is white, they are much harder to distinguish.

  2. 5/5Works Great; Reasonable Fixed Pro Price

I found that WebSSH works great. I was able to use it without any delay hunting around for secret decoder rings. The pro price is fixed and seems very reasonable. [Added a year later] Another wonderful aspect of WebSSH Pro is the discipline the developer used, taking the time, working diligently to fully architect the user interface completely consistently with Apple's UI guidelines. I hadn't used WebSSH Pro for more than a year. Nevertheless, I was able to SSH into a server for the very first time ever in seconds by cloning another server's profile, then edit the name and IP address. Voilà! I completed the entire session process in a fifth the time it took me to write this paragraph. Server configurations may be easily stored in one’s iCloud Drive. Overall, product value is more than excellent. I would definitely repurchase WebSSH at twice the price. It just saved so much of my time that it paid for itself all over again today.

  3. 3/5Good App, Needs Work

I have tried using a few ssh clients for IOS and this one, so far, is the best I've found. It needs work however. 1) if I run a while true loop in the foregrounded term, the session remains usable; put the same into the background and with ~60 seconds a notification is popped about terminating. The issue I have with this is that no background ssh session should EVER terminate with an active process running in it. 2) the screen freezes - this drives me NUTS! There is no evident reason for this as it happens in an unpredictable manner. e.g. Sometimes I can flip to Safari to read something online for 2 minutes, return to WebSSH and I'm good to go, while other times I can flip to Safari for 10 seconds, return to the term and keyboard input is blocked. Sometimes I can hit Ctrl-C to clear the condition and, most often, there is nothing to do but shutdown the session. 3) This app corrupts the active session *frequently* and leaves behind it an open tty on the remote server. If I knew of anything better I'd dump Pro in a second - unfortunately it seems this is the most advanced ssh client on the App Store at this time. Meh.

  4. 4/5Poor execution of decent ssh client

First, as to its job as a SSH client, it seems to work fine. I’ve connected to three different servers with both password and private key authentication, and it works great. That having been said, the UX of this app, itself, it horrible. All the little things that we take for granted nowadays are just poorly implemented. For example, 1. To add a connection, you have to tap a button, which makes another button appear and you have to tap on that. Weird UX choice there. 2. When adding a connect, you can type in a group name. You can’t pick from any list of existing groups, but rather you just have to hope you didn’t misspell it. 3. To edit a connection, there’s no obvious way to edit. You might guess long-press, but that doesn’t do anything. You have to swipe to the left and then you get a kludgy half-screen presentation of a tiny edit button. 4. When adding private key, you can’t pick a file from the iPadOS file system, but rather you have to find your key file (outside of this app), open the key file, copy the contents to your clipboard, jump back to this app, and paste it in. This is just a few examples of the really curious/confusing design choices, but these sorts of things happen throughout the app. This has, simply put, incredibly clumsy, anachronistic user interface. In terms of desirable new features, I’d request the ability to, for example, store the connections in iCloud. It’s frustrating to have such a cumbersome user interface and have to recreate the connections again on different iOS devices. But once you get your connections set up, it seems to work well.

  5. 5/5WebSSH Review

It does what it says it does. It may not have dark mode, but other than that is there really anything else to say. I mean it passes the threshold of completing it's job with flying colors. It also has extra features it's secure and mostly without bugs. I just bought the full version to support the developer, and that isn't something i do often. It's updated fairly regularly which it's more than I can say for most apps out there that have a single developer. If you use a remote connection in everyday life, or even once in a while, the free versions is fully capable. 👍👍 two thumbs up in my book.
