1/5This iOS app presents videos incorrectly, and ruins the filmmakers’ intent.
I absolutely despise this Vimeo iOS app. Instead of showing black pixels outside the aspect ratio of a video (like any normal video player), this Vimeo app plays a blurry version of films in the unused pixels. In other words, if I made a movie that has a 16:9 aspect ratio, then the extra pixels on the sides of my phone will play a blurry version of my film instead of just showing black pixels. Or if my movie is in 2.39:1, then it will show a blurry version of the movie on the top and bottom. Basically, any video that you play that isn’t the exact aspect ratio of your phone’s screen will be displayed incorrectly. Guys, this is a BIG problem! You’re completely altering the presentation of my work without my consent! I don’t want a blurry version of my film to be playing behind my movie. It’s super distracting and it looks terrible. Any pixels outside of the aspect ratio of my movie should just be BLACK PIXELS. You have no right to change the artistic intent of my movie. Also: WHY ON EARTH is the default setting to play a movie with subtitles??? That should NOT be the default setting. Subtitles should only be enabled if a user decides to SELECT them. I swear, whoever designed this app has deliberately gone out of their way to compromise the presentation of filmmakers’ work. It’s inappropriate. I hate this app now.

2/5Website is great, app is very flawed
Love Vimeo and their video quality is the best. As is the quality of artists drawn to their platform. Been Vimeo Plus customer happily paying $12 a month for over fifteen years to use their platform. But this App is just a disgrace. The Vimeo app is an unexpectedly clunky, slow loading, and flawed portal to try and watch Vimeo videos on. At first I thought maybe it was just me (or my phone) but have found other video apps (YT, F.io, etc) load faster, playback controls work fine, and rarely have any of the same issues I do with Vimeo’s app. Worst though is that often when I share Vimeo links people have issues even watching the videos. Usually this happens with private links (ones that don’t require a password) and I’ve had to use other platforms just to share my videos with them. Literally had a musician email me yesterday saying they can’t get the music video I did for them to play (it’s a final edit they need to approve) and a composer doing a score for another project tell me earlier the week he can’t watch the scenes I sent him. For client work I may just stop using Vimeo altogether. And it’s not just a “this past week” or “recent app update” issue. It’s been like this as long as I can remember. I was just motivated to write this after a musician sent me their music video this morning and it took multiple attempts to get it to playback in full screen (it kept doing picture-in-picture) as if my figure was hitting the wrong button every time I tried. Looked up their video on YT and played it in full screen just fine. Took more time than playing their link in the Vimeo app but at least it didn’t body shame my fat fingers. Again, love the website. No issues there. Love their video encoding quality. This app is awful.

1/5Do NOT TRUST THIS SITE
I don’t know where to begin with how bad this platform is. After using their platform for 4 years and uploading hundreds and hundreds of videos to my Patreon account, they one day (with not a single warning or a single strike on my account) deleted every single one of my videos. Patreon was my livelihood and I depend on it to pay my mortgage etc. I suddenly had a Patreon site that went from having around 1,500 videos to zero overnight. They stole 4 years of my hard work that I can never get back. They also personally reached out to days before deleting my account and convinced me to pay for a year long subscription to their platform at the highest pay level, then deleted my account with zero refund. This is minor compared to the thousands of dollars I’m going to lose this month because I made the HUGE MISTAKE of trusting this site. It should also be noted that even when paying the maximum amount for security my videos were still downloaded and shared on other platforms. They offer zero security and zero respect of content. If you value your content I urge you to look elsewhere. DO NOT TRUST THIS PLATFORM

5/5Right you are
Yes it’s great feeling to follow the app back to a freaking Human. Technology has done way over played itself. When I call customer service with a grievance I feel much comfort with a human helping me. Because from a human and only a human will my grievance be properly addressed. Addressed by the “Human Element“. For, only from another actual human being will you experience the appropriate response. The Human element is so embedded in our being that we can NOT escape that component of ourselves known as the humaneness Beyond genetic it’s within each of our identities far more interpersonal than your DNA. Is humanity. There is no programming that would give an AI humaneness. Nope, not going to happen. AI is noting but a program. Sure, artificial intelligence can think outside of the program, that is what it is. Still it is AI; not HUMAN to be able to conceive humanity.

2/5Developers, can you please consider these improvements?
So I want to like the app, I think it’s a great platform, but the navigation is completely frustrating and even made me quit viewing my video to make this review. It’s frustrating because as a platform it seems to hold great promise, but being 2019 it’s hard to accept the lack of some very basic app navigation. For once the video quality can’t be adjusted and if you have a not-so-great connection, you have to tolerate poor quality streaming. A feature where you can select the video quality manually (despite longer buffer times) would be so appreciated. Another improvement would be the video playback navigation. Specifically, features that can be tapped during the video to rewind or fast forward 5-15 seconds (like the podcast app on iPhones, or YouTube’s double tap). It’s so irritating to have to drag the little play indicator and hope you land on the part of the video you intended to. Lastly, on a desktop it’s really tricky and non-intuitive finding the videos you have purchased. Don’t remember the path to access them off the top of my head but I do remember it’s not very explicit. A simple “purchases” or “downloads” tab would be amazing. Hate to rate so low but these are so basic that in 2019 they should be standard for playback applications/platforms. Thanks for the consideration.
