As someone who currently owns or has owned every RSS reader in the App Store I will tell you that Unread ranks as one of the top three. It will be number one of those three depending on your reading tastes. To put it bluntly Unread provides the best reading experience of any RSS reader out there period. The way it handles formatting of text and content is simply amazing. Unread is what I would call “Low and slow”. It’s a minimalist interface (Which I love). It is designed for you to lay back on your couch and just enjoy reading high quality content from high quality websites and blogs. Unread is not the RSS reader for Power users or somebody that has hundreds of feeds that they are trying to organize and plow through content (Although I have 160 feeds and Unread still does this for me masterfully). The developer is RESPONSIVE!!! This is so critical in any app I review. John is not only an amazing developer but also you can tell he genuinely cares about Unread and his user bases experiences. He takes feedback and he actually implements the feedback that aligns with the app philosophy. There are other readers with more features. But this reader has the RIGHT features to ensure an excellent reading experience. I am excited for future improvements because I know they will be done right. Well worth the investment. Easiest $20 I ever spent.

5/5From a long-time NewsBlur user
I’ve been an avid and mostly happy NewsBlur user for over a decade. Despite my enthusiasm, zero percent of the friends I recommended it to declined to adopt it due to the complexity of the UI. Their loss, but there are issues to be sure. So when I recently discovered that I could continue using NewsBlur with my nearly 500 subscriptions I was intrigued. Now, after a week of using Unread as a front end I am quite happy. The Unread UI is clean and orderly, and the performance (once my recent articles have been refreshed) is good. I confess I’ll miss having each feed’s icon displayed, and I also lose all of the training I’ve done on NewsBlur. But Unread renders my articles better (after tuning with the Display option, which is brilliant) which eliminates some of the frustrations with NewsBlur. I’ll probably continue to rely on NewsBlur, at least for a while, to avoid the drudgery of copying all my subscriptions over to Unread. This was a great find!

5/5The Perfect RSS Reader
I’ve been a mostly happy customer of Unread v1 for a couple of years. I liked the visual look of the reader and the intuitive interface, but wished I could manage my RSS subscriptions in the app. Along comes Unread 2 with a $20 annual subscription. No way, I thought. I am not paying $20 per year for this. But I downloaded it and tried it out. 24 hours later I was happily paying the subscription fee. Why? Four reasons, plus a bonus. 1. The visual look of the news reader is even better now. It’s hard to explain why, but it fits my particular tastes extremely well, both on iPad and iPhone. The same reason I prefer Things over Omnifocus. The thought and care that has gone into the design is impressive. 2. Subscription management is now available inside the app, and it’s extremely intuitive to use. 3. The reader automatically senses whether the article is full text or just a snippet to get you to click through to the web page. If it’s a link, Unread automatically shows you the text from the web page. You don’t even know this is happening. It’s as close to magic as any RSS reader can get. 4. Unread 2 caches photos and text of your feed in the background which makes the reading experience much better and faster. Again, all in the background so you can just focus on the article. Bonus: I feel that subscription fees will help this developer continue to evolve Unread to new heights. I want to support and participate in that. I am usually reluctant to go the subscription route. But for the delightful experience this app brings me every day, I’m happy to spend the ~$2 a month. A+.

5/510/10 Will Pay Again!
I tried Unread before and it didn’t stick. After getting off Twitter and wanting a healthy way to stay well-informed I returned to RSS. A key feature for me is pinning to Pinboard. Unread’s ability to add quick actions on article selection is phenomenal and allows me to streamline my pinning process. Further, full screen reading mode is something I didn’t even know I wanted, but now I can’t live without. Blocking out distractions, I find that full screen keeps me more focused on the material at hand. 100% I can recommend Unread over any other RSS app in the store, particularly Reeder which is, in my opinion, it’s main contender.

4/5Love it but might switch back to Reeder
I love and adore this app, and recently paid for a year which I have no regrets about and like supporting indie app development. However, I might switch back to the dying Reeder for two reasons: 1) No Google Reader-style shortcuts (J/K pervious/next, M mark read/unread, S star.) Would also love an easy way to edit those (I don’t use QWERTY so want to remap them to those finger positions on DVORAK/Colemak). macOS doesn’t let you add shortcuts for single-key shortcuts, and Modifier+Key is too much when kicked back leisurely reading with no hands on the keyboard. 2) On iOS, text weirdly goes behind the Dynamic Island, while Reeder adds a bar to the UI to section off the island so text isn’t around it. I feel uneasy when text is there like that.

This update adds the ability to sync with Inkwell. Add an Inkwell account just like you would any other feed service account. I updated the privacy policy, adding a link to the Inkwell privacy policy. Reliability Improvements Around Webpage Text: Webpage text for an article can either be generated via Unread’s webpage text cloud service or on device. The webpage text cloud service is faster, requires less battery power, and uses less data. The cloud service also makes it possible for me to deploy an update to the webpage parsing logic without releasing an update to the app through the App Store. I added an on-device webpage text generator to Unread when I added the website accounts feature for paywalled articles. When retrieving webpage text via a website account, Unread does not use the cloud service. This ensures that Unread’s servers never see credentials or authorization tokens pertaining to a website account. When the webpage text cloud service is unable to generate webpage text for an article, Unread now falls back to using its on-device webpage text generator. One trend I have seen is an increasing number of websites refusing requests from clients in data centers and cloud platforms. I believe the rise of artificial intelligence has motivated websites to block anything that looks like an automated agent from retrieving webpages. A request coming from a data center or from a cloud platform looks like such a request, but a request coming from your device does not. This change makes webpage text much more reliable. The webpage text cloud service keeps track of websites for which it is unable to generate webpage text. Unread keeps a synced copy of that list of websites. When Unread needs webpage text for an article from such a website, it does not ask the webpage text cloud service. Instead it goes straight to the on-device webpage text generator. This ensures that loading webpage text is not slowed down by a request to the webpage text cloud service when that will likely fail. Faster Opening of Link Articles: When showing both feed and webpage text for an article and that article’s webpage text has not yet been retrieved, Unread now shows the feed text immediately when it is opened. It then retrieves the webpage text and appends it to the article. This makes it possible to start reading the feed text immediately. It makes the app feel much faster. Additional Improvements: • Menu items for renaming folders and tags are now consistently called “Rename Folder” and “Rename Tag” respectively, except when working in a NewsBlur account. In a NewsBlur account, the menu item is still called “Edit Folder” because the resulting screen also allows you to set the parent folder of the NewsBlur folder. • Unread now treats most kottke.org articles as link articles. If you set the link article display mode to Feed & Webpage Text for the kottke.org feed, you will see both the kottke.org article and the article to which it links. This change will apply to new articles downloaded after installing this update. • This update adds minor improvements around sharing articles to other apps via the share sheet. • This update adds a variety of improvements to the in-app webpage text generator.

This update adds the ability to sync with Gobbler. Add a Gobbler account to Unread just like you would any other feed service account. Particularly nice attributes of Gobbler and Unread’s integration include: • Gobbler can receive email newsletters. These newsletters are available in Unread. • The Gobbler API reports which feeds it is unable to access. Unread makes the list of feed errors available for Gobbler accounts, just as it does for Unread Cloud and Local accounts. • The Subscribe in Unread share sheet extension supports Gobbler accounts. Matter Article Action: Matter recently released the Matter API. With this update, the Matter article action can use the Matter API. Using the Matter API avoids the need to briefly bring Shortcuts to the foreground when invoked. Matter makes the Matter API available to Matter Pro subscribers. For the benefit of customers who do not subscribe to Matter Pro, Unread’s Matter article action can also operate as it did before: by invoking a shortcut that works with the Matter app. If you subscribe to Matter Pro and use the Matter article action, you can configure the Matter article action to use the Matter API as follows: 1. Open Unread’s Settings screen. 2. Tap Article Actions under the Premium Options section. 3. Tap the Matter row. Or if keyboard shortcuts are shown on that screen, tap the Status row below the Matter header. 4. Choose Use Matter API from the resulting menu. 5. You will be prompted to enter an API token. You can generate an API token from the Matter settings webpage. Reddit Posts: This update improves the layout of Reddit posts that contain images. Under some circumstances Unread will display images in Reddit posts that previous versions of Unread could not display. Reddit posts that are links to articles are now treated as link articles in Unread. You can determine whether Unread views an article as a link article based on whether it has another website domain at the bottom of its entry in the article list. As with link articles from other feeds, you can show the article to which a Reddit article links by setting the display mode to Feed & Webpage Text. The linked article will appear underneath the article from the feed to which you are subscribed. You can do this by opening the article, swiping the screen to the left, choosing Display from the resulting menu, and then choosing Feed & Webpage Text from the resulting submenu. At the prompt, choose All Link Articles from that feed to apply that change to all link articles from that subreddit. For all new subscriptions to subreddit feeds, Feed & Webpage Text will be the default display mode for link articles. This update does not change your existing feed subscription settings. The improvements around Reddit posts will apply to new articles downloaded after installing this update. Caching: For Unread Premium subscribers, the webpage text caching setting can now be set to one of the following: • Never • Wi-Fi or better • Cellular or better • Even in low data mode The image caching setting can be set to one of the following: • Never • Wi-Fi or better • Cellular or better Unread never caches images when in low data mode. The caching setting value for webpage text must be at least as broad as that for images, because Unread needs webpage text for an article in order to determine the set of images to cache for that article. A separate setting allows you to determine whether caching should happen when the device is in low power mode.           "body": "As someone who currently owns or has owned every RSS reader in the App Store I will tell you that Unread ranks as one of the top three. It will be number one of those three depending on your reading tastes. To put it bluntly Unread provides the best reading experience of any RSS reader out there period. The way it handles formatting of text and content is simply amazing. Unread is what I would call “Low and slow”. It’s a minimalist interface (Which I love). It is designed for you to lay back on your couch and just enjoy reading high quality content from high quality websites and blogs. Unread is not the RSS reader for Power users or somebody that has hundreds of feeds that they are trying to organize and plow through content (Although I have 160 feeds and Unread still does this for me masterfully). The developer is RESPONSIVE!!! This is so critical in any app I review. John is not only an amazing developer but also you can tell he genuinely cares about Unread and his user bases experiences. He takes feedback and he actually implements the feedback that aligns with the app philosophy. There are other readers with more features. But this reader has the RIGHT features to ensure an excellent reading experience. I am excited for future improvements because I know they will be done right. Well worth the investment. Easiest $20 I ever spent.",

          "title": "From a long-time NewsBlur user",
          "body": "I’ve been an avid and mostly happy NewsBlur user for over a decade. Despite my enthusiasm, zero percent of the friends I recommended it to declined to adopt it due to the complexity of the UI. Their loss, but there are issues to be sure. So when I recently discovered that I could continue using NewsBlur with my nearly 500 subscriptions I was intrigued. Now, after a week of using Unread as a front end I am quite happy. The Unread UI is clean and orderly, and the performance (once my recent articles have been refreshed) is good. I confess I’ll miss having each feed’s icon displayed, and I also lose all of the training I’ve done on NewsBlur. But Unread renders my articles better (after tuning with the Display option, which is brilliant) which eliminates some of the frustrations with NewsBlur. I’ll probably continue to rely on NewsBlur, at least for a while, to avoid the drudgery of copying all my subscriptions over to Unread. This was a great find!",

          "title": "The Perfect RSS Reader",
          "body": "I’ve been a mostly happy customer of Unread v1 for a couple of years. I liked the visual look of the reader and the intuitive interface, but wished I could manage my RSS subscriptions in the app. Along comes Unread 2 with a $20 annual subscription. No way, I thought. I am not paying $20 per year for this. But I downloaded it and tried it out. 24 hours later I was happily paying the subscription fee. Why? Four reasons, plus a bonus. 1. The visual look of the news reader is even better now. It’s hard to explain why, but it fits my particular tastes extremely well, both on iPad and iPhone. The same reason I prefer Things over Omnifocus. The thought and care that has gone into the design is impressive. 2. Subscription management is now available inside the app, and it’s extremely intuitive to use. 3. The reader automatically senses whether the article is full text or just a snippet to get you to click through to the web page. If it’s a link, Unread automatically shows you the text from the web page. You don’t even know this is happening. It’s as close to magic as any RSS reader can get. 4. Unread 2 caches photos and text of your feed in the background which makes the reading experience much better and faster. Again, all in the background so you can just focus on the article. Bonus: I feel that subscription fees will help this developer continue to evolve Unread to new heights. I want to support and participate in that. I am usually reluctant to go the subscription route. But for the delightful experience this app brings me every day, I’m happy to spend the ~$2 a month. A+.",

          "body": "I tried Unread before and it didn’t stick. After getting off Twitter and wanting a healthy way to stay well-informed I returned to RSS. A key feature for me is pinning to Pinboard. Unread’s ability to add quick actions on article selection is phenomenal and allows me to streamline my pinning process. Further, full screen reading mode is something I didn’t even know I wanted, but now I can’t live without. Blocking out distractions, I find that full screen keeps me more focused on the material at hand. 100% I can recommend Unread over any other RSS app in the store, particularly Reeder which is, in my opinion, it’s main contender.",

          "body": "I love and adore this app, and recently paid for a year which I have no regrets about and like supporting indie app development. However, I might switch back to the dying Reeder for two reasons: 1) No Google Reader-style shortcuts (J/K pervious/next, M mark read/unread, S star.) Would also love an easy way to edit those (I don’t use QWERTY so want to remap them to those finger positions on DVORAK/Colemak). macOS doesn’t let you add shortcuts for single-key shortcuts, and Modifier+Key is too much when kicked back leisurely reading with no hands on the keyboard. 2) On iOS, text weirdly goes behind the Dynamic Island, while Reeder adds a bar to the UI to section off the island so text isn’t around it. I feel uneasy when text is there like that.",

Reliability Improvements Around Webpage Text: Webpage text for an article can either be generated via Unread’s webpage text cloud service or on device. The webpage text cloud service is faster, requires less battery power, and uses less data. The cloud service also makes it possible for me to deploy an update to the webpage parsing logic without releasing an update to the app through the App Store. I added an on-device webpage text generator to Unread when I added the website accounts feature for paywalled articles. When retrieving webpage text via a website account, Unread does not use the cloud service. This ensures that Unread’s servers never see credentials or authorization tokens pertaining to a website account. When the webpage text cloud service is unable to generate webpage text for an article, Unread now falls back to using its on-device webpage text generator. One trend I have seen is an increasing number of websites refusing requests from clients in data centers and cloud platforms. I believe the rise of artificial intelligence has motivated websites to block anything that looks like an automated agent from retrieving webpages. A request coming from a data center or from a cloud platform looks like such a request, but a request coming from your device does not. This change makes webpage text much more reliable. The webpage text cloud service keeps track of websites for which it is unable to generate webpage text. Unread keeps a synced copy of that list of websites. When Unread needs webpage text for an article from such a website, it does not ask the webpage text cloud service. Instead it goes straight to the on-device webpage text generator. This ensures that loading webpage text is not slowed down by a request to the webpage text cloud service when that will likely fail. Faster Opening of Link Articles: When showing both feed and webpage text for an article and that article’s webpage text has not yet been retrieved, Unread now shows the feed text immediately when it is opened. It then retrieves the webpage text and appends it to the article. This makes it possible to start reading the feed text immediately. It makes the app feel much faster. Additional Improvements: • Menu items for renaming folders and tags are now consistently called “Rename Folder” and “Rename Tag” respectively, except when working in a NewsBlur account. In a NewsBlur account, the menu item is still called “Edit Folder” because the resulting screen also allows you to set the parent folder of the NewsBlur folder. • Unread now treats most kottke.org articles as link articles. If you set the link article display mode to Feed & Webpage Text for the kottke.org feed, you will see both the kottke.org article and the article to which it links. Using the Matter API avoids the need to briefly bring Shortcuts to the foreground when invoked. Matter makes the Matter API available to Matter Pro subscribers. For the benefit of customers who do not subscribe to Matter Pro, Unread’s Matter article action can also operate as it did before: by invoking a shortcut that works with the Matter app. If you subscribe to Matter Pro and use the Matter article action, you can configure the Matter article action to use the Matter API as follows: 1. Open Unread’s Settings screen. 2. Tap Article Actions under the Premium Options section. 3. Tap the Matter row. Or if keyboard shortcuts are shown on that screen, tap the Status row below the Matter header. 4. Choose Use Matter API from the resulting menu. 5. You will be prompted to enter an API token. You can generate an API token from the Matter settings webpage. Reddit Posts: This update improves the layout of Reddit posts that contain images. Under some circumstances Unread will display images in Reddit posts that previous versions of Unread could not display. Reddit posts that are links to articles are now treated as link articles in Unread. You can determine whether Unread views an article as a link article based on whether it has another website domain at the bottom of its entry in the article list. As with link articles from other feeds, you can show the article to which a Reddit article links by setting the display mode to Feed & Webpage Text. The linked article will appear underneath the article from the feed to which you are subscribed. You can do this by opening the article, swiping the screen to the left, choosing Display from the resulting menu, and then choosing Feed & Webpage Text from the resulting submenu. At the prompt, choose All Link Articles from that feed to apply that change to all link articles from that subreddit. For all new subscriptions to subreddit feeds, Feed & Webpage Text will be the default display mode for link articles. This update does not change your existing feed subscription settings. The improvements around Reddit posts will apply to new articles downloaded after installing this update. Caching: For Unread Premium subscribers, the webpage text caching setting can now be set to one of the following: • Never • Wi-Fi or better • Cellular or better • Even in low data mode The image caching setting can be set to one of the following: • Never • Wi-Fi or better • Cellular or better Unread never caches images when in low data mode. The caching setting value for webpage text must be at least as broad as that for images, because Unread needs webpage text for an article in order to determine the set of images to cache for that article. A separate setting allows you to determine whether caching should happen when the device is in low power mode.
