  1. 2/5Won’t read biometric chip consistently

We’ve done three passports in a row and despite positioning them the same way for each separate process, it took different times to read the chips and these are passports from the same nationality (presumably the chip is located in the same place) and the same phone was used. For first passport took three tries, the second took about 10, the second took maybe 30 tries and needed to shut down the app once in the midst of it to restart the process from the start. Every time too it failed to read the chip the message would be that the phone or passport were moved even though that wasn’t the case for 99% of the attempts. So this app is in dire need of fixing how it reads the biometric chip as it was a frustrating process. The app should also have a section to enter the authorization’s reference number and maybe some associated info such as the last name or passport number or date of birth to be able to retrieve the ETA and know what the validity is instead of merely needing to go back to my email to find it.

  2. 3/5Wonky chip reading

I applied last night I had all sorts of trouble getting the chip to read. I tried for several minutes every which way to no avail. My wife applied several days before me, and she had similar issues. I asked her what her trick was, and she said just skip. She had done that and didn’t have any issues getting approved pretty quickly. So I followed her advice, and just skipped, and went through the rest of the process. Everything went through just fine, and I ended up being approved within a minute. I hadn’t even gotten my credit card back in my wallet before I got the approval email. That part was quick and over all the whole process was simple and straightforward overall. (And I even got approved more quickly than she did). Fix the chip reading part of this app, and it gets at least four stars. Looking forward to my trip to the UK in the upcoming months!

  3. 5/5Easy - But read below

As others have pointed out, the chip in US passports is in the inside back cover. What is not mentioned in all reviews is that to successfully scan you need to touch the “CONTINUE” but at the bottom of the page with the animation showing how to scan the passport. Once you do, a smaller black screen will appear that says to scan. You must do this step in order to successfully scan. Slowly slide the phone up or down the inside cover, physically touching the page with the phone. The chip is about half way up Slightly to the right. As you scan watch your phone for the message that the say the chip has been detected and stop moving your phone. Once captured, a message will tell you that it’s been successfully scanned. I had my approval within an hour. Good luck!!

  4. 5/5Easy, worked great!

The app is simple and user friendly. It made the most sense to use the app on my phone instead of an online browser since I had to take photos of myself and my passport. The app guided me through lighting needed, how to hold my phone, background recommendations, and my only concern was my current photo matching my passport photo because it was early AM before coffee. However, the application was approved a few days later and I’m good to go! The scanning of the passport was the only frustration, but eventually it either worked or I skipped it, I can’t remember, but I’m sure this functionality will improve.

  5. 5/5Worked well, some suggestions

Everything worked well for me. I’m hoping the developers look at feedback and here’s my concerns: My country of residence uses “/“ in the address, this character isn’t allowed so I had to write out some extra to make it work. This should be adjusted because a nonstandard address can obviously be problematic. The ‘what country are you applying from’ is really bad. It says it’s used to choose currency, then you’re forced into a bad currency conversion. I chose the UK although I’m in the eurozone so I wouldn’t have to pay their bad currency conversion. I really hope this is only for currency conversion or it’s going to cause me problems. Please change this to ‘which currency would you like to pay in’ to avoid complications.

  1. 3/5

App is optimized for Gesture navigation mode only at Pixel 9. If you have the 3 button mode enabled you can't take a photo when the app prompts you to do so.

  2. 5/5

I was done with everything and approved within 5 minutes. Literally 5 minutes. No second takes needed, clear instructions, all easy and doable.

  4. 1/5

Don't waste your time. Fail after fail. Took half a dozen passport photos, "accepted" them, then required a photo again. Repeatedly had to reload the app, sharing from square one. Ended up deleting the app. Never again. Maybe it'll work for you first time through, but if it doesn't: DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME!

Horrible experience. we didn't know we needed an ETA to enter the UK from Australia. so we had to do these at the airport before checking in. The app crashed nine out of ten times during the application process. We had to get three applications, one for a one year old. The application expects us to be able to get this perfect photo of a one year old with perfect lighting conditions. To cause so many people all this stress just to make some extra money...shame on the UK government
