1. 5/5New app harder to navigate and read paper

   I updated to the newest app on my iPad and immediately couldn’t find the Sunday comics on the list of Sections as it had been on the old app. It took awhile to realize how to find thumbnails and only scrolling through all of them to the end led to comics. Couldn’t even find the comics section by search. C’mon! Also can’t figure out how to get a single page full width view for any page of the paper without manually enlarging the page I get in the two page view! Good grief! This is not an intuitive app and does’t provide easy navigation shortcuts to everything or better page viewing options for people with poorer eyesight. Plus it wants all my personal info to use including financial! I resent that! I’m outta here!

2. 1/5Great leap backward for the e-paper

   The recent upgrade of the on-line version of the Globe that appeared several days ago includes a major step backward in usability of the e-paper. I prefer the e-paper as it mimics the experience of reading a print version of the paper. With the new upgrade, the useful navigation tools of the last iteration are gone. Also, loading articles is less reliable and slower, especially articles near the screen edge. Finally, for those of us who prefer to do the daily puzzles on paper, the ability to tap on a puzzle and then print has been lost. One must do a screen shot, crop the image and then print. While there are numerous options to do puzzles on-line under the “play” tab, it’s not clear which of the Sudoku options corresponds to the print version. There appears to be no option to print any of these. Please bring back the more user-friendly last iteration of the e-paper.

3. 1/5Significant issues with app navigation and remembering login

   I’m logged into the app. If I open an article and scroll down, under the expanded comments, there’s a link that says “please login to comment.” I tap the link, it will either open my phone’s default web browser view of the Globe, (often to a different article) or will open in a mini-mobile web view. This is WITHOUT launching the web browser app - I’m still within the Globe app, but it shows the full article url and is no longer in dark mode. …It’s worth noting that every day several articles (seemingly random ones), when selected from the app Home Screen, open this way. From here, the mobile web option to “open in the Boston Globe app” will loop and do nothing because the user technically never left the app. Either way - still trying to comment: The browser/minibrowser are also logged into my account but won’t let me comment either. Bad bugs for readers trying to stay engaged.

   I love the Boston Globe and have read it every day for 45 years. I still don’t miss a day, even though I don’t live in Boston anymore. My one concern is that it increasingly seems determined to enter the culture wars, more as a participant than as an observer. I am not a habitual critic of the press, and I don’t look for liberal bias under every leaf. But I think the Globe’s news articles do tend to be slanted, and the selection of what to report or omit seems to reflect an agenda at times. In the opinion pages, liberal perspectives outnumber conservative ones by at least 4 to 1. Many columns are preachy and repetitive, more hysterical than thought-provoking. I hope the editorial board will occasionally self-reflect and remember that its more strident members do not hold a monopoly on truth and justice. Still, I love the paper and probably always will.

5. 5/5One of the planet’s finest newspapers

   I have been reading the Globe for 30 years now, and as such am pleasanty biased. Front to back, this newspaper continues to hire and keep excellent writers The Globe, unlike other rags like the Herald or Post, values truth and data above all else; and has earned its rep as an honest, fair-handed, and progressive daily. With few exceptions, this paper does an outstanding job in reporting, investigation , delivering a product that continues to be best in class. Most writers are super smart but never preachy; backing each piece with context and scope so I can quickly ascertain whether I should pay more or less attention to the issues most important to me and my community. Those who complain about the Globe’s “left wing” bias or progressive nature may want to also consider the culture and history of its readership. “Balanced reporting” shouldn’t ever mean that you need to force an equal quantity of Left vs Right coverage as one poster commented in a review here. Balance in this sense never makes sense. I like that the paper is an example of the best in journalism; reporting vthe facts, support with data and proven scientific approach. Expose the lies and the liars for who they are; no matter the political party. Ffhg Keep up the good work. I’d only ask for a bit more college sports coverage; especially hoops. I understand Boston is a pro-sports city with our rich heritage among all professional asclubs and franchises but I think there might only be more support for the local schools.
