5/5Love this app still 10+ years later
I love the history aspect of this app. I’ve been using it for over 10+ years now faithfully. I came over when it was just one app, Foursquare. Before this, I was using Loopt, which didn’t make it. I wish I started out using this app first. I missed some great years and great check-ins I couldn’t merge into this one. But Swarm has been very useful. I’ve even mentioned when I got pulled over one night randomly going home when the police officer asked me where am I coming from. I just said I just left dinner and showed him the app. He asked do I log everything. I said yes. Because of random situations like this. I’m where I’m supposed to be. Plus I like it. The pics aspect. Etc. I wish it could integrate into the journal app or vice versa. Not sure how that would be done. But it’s great. I miss the watch functionality of adding badges and being able to talk to add to it. But maybe that wasn’t utilized enough by everyone. But I hope this app never goes away.

2/5Great app but feels like something is missing
UPDATE: The latest update to the swarm app is just not as easy to use as it was before. The map is now combined with places to explore as well as places you’ve been and is very hard to decipher all the places that you have been. need separate maps for exploration and for places you’ve have been. I love using swarm to check in to places especially when they are new to me. It’s also fun to compete for mayorships at places I frequently visit. What I don’t understand is all these coins I collect over the years. They are very pointless because there is nothing to spend them on. Unless there are plans to start letting users to spend the coins on thing I think they are pointless. If the coins are used for something I would give a higher rating

2/5Hoping they change course
Having used Foursquare and Swarm for many years, I had long ago given up hope that this product would receive any updates. I’m happy to see that it does in fact have life, but the changes that they have made with this new design don’t make any sense to me. Why do I always land on the map screen? Does this work better if I live in New York? Where I am this is a completely pointless feature. Now I am much less even bothering to check where my friends have checked in. Also the app has seemingly become much less accurate at correctly suggestion the location I want. Somehow I still haven’t found a location tracking service that is good enough for me to replace this, but I keep trying all I find and don’t have confidence that Swarm will last much longer.

Dec ‘25 update: I wish I could rate this lower than one star. It feels like the point is to dissuade long-term users of the app. I got notifications of the new feature that the app can suggest check-ins from photos. I did not consent to this and there is no way to disable it. I guess now the only option is to disable all access to photos, meaning I no longer get to add them to my check-ins. Garbage. — The history map is gone. Why would you eliminate that?? New interface is terrible and not user-friendly. I keep messing up my check-ins and it’s frustrating. Annoying. It’s nice to be able to add a sticker to a check-in after the fact, and pointless because the multipliers aren’t applied. The app is flat and cold now. sterile. Boring. Placemaker/superuser edits are clunky. Creating new venues is too difficult. If the new “features” have to stay please at least give us a way to turn them off. I can’t stand that the Explore tab is the default and it doesn’t even show where I’ve been. I check into the same venue almost every day and it’s 1) not the suggested place so I always have change it, and 2) always about #10 on the list. WHY? I hate the black icon. Are we ever going to be given a way to use coins again? I borderline hate this app now and that makes me sad. Fix it.

3/5Uploading a photo to swarm taken in another time zone > BUG ALERT
Thanks for the new feature that allows you to initiate a Swarm check-in from the photos app. HOWEVER, it is messing up the check in time if you upload a photo after you leave the time zone where you took the photo. Example: I took a picture at ***11:30am brunch in Lyon*** but forgot to check in. I flew to NYC and then finally shared it with Swarm to create the check-in. ***The Lyon check-in logged on Swarm as 5:30pm!*** Look, Lyon is 6hrs ahead of NYC, so I would understand if the check-in showed as 5:30am. I strongly disagree with that approach, but it would not be a bug. However 5:30pm IS A BUG any way you look at it — it was not 5:30pm in either Lyon OR New York when the photo was taken. ***Looks like you added 6 hours instead of subtracting.*** THE SOLUTION IS TO MATCH THE CHECK-IN TIME TO THE LOCAL TIME IN THE PLACE WHERE THE PHOTO WAS TAKEN! NO TIME CONVERSIONS ARE WARRANTED. I REPEAT, NO TIME CONVERSIONS ARE WARRANTED. At the very least, fix the bug because your conversion math is wrong.

I love using swarm to check in to places especially when they are new to me. It’s also fun to compete for mayorships at places I frequently visit. What I don’t understand is all these coins I collect over the years. They are very pointless because there is nothing to spend them on. Unless there are plans to start letting users to spend the coins on thing I think they are pointless. If the coins are used for something I would give a higher rating",

          "body": "Having used Foursquare and Swarm for many years, I had long ago given up hope that this product would receive any updates. I’m happy to see that it does in fact have life, but the changes that they have made with this new design don’t make any sense to me. Why do I always land on the map screen? Does this work better if I live in New York? Where I am this is a completely pointless feature. Now I am much less even bothering to check where my friends have checked in. Also the app has seemingly become much less accurate at correctly suggestion the location I want. Somehow I still haven’t found a location tracking service that is good enough for me to replace this, but I keep trying all I find and don’t have confidence that Swarm will last much longer.",

          "body": "Dec ‘25 update: I wish I could rate this lower than one star. It feels like the point is to dissuade long-term users of the app. I got notifications of the new feature that the app can suggest check-ins from photos. I did not consent to this and there is no way to disable it. I guess now the only option is to disable all access to photos, meaning I no longer get to add them to my check-ins. Garbage. — The history map is gone. Why would you eliminate that?? New interface is terrible and not user-friendly. I keep messing up my check-ins and it’s frustrating. Annoying. It’s nice to be able to add a sticker to a check-in after the fact, and pointless because the multipliers aren’t applied. The app is flat and cold now. sterile. Boring. Placemaker/superuser edits are clunky. Creating new venues is too difficult. If the new “features” have to stay please at least give us a way to turn them off. I can’t stand that the Explore tab is the default and it doesn’t even show where I’ve been. I check into the same venue almost every day and it’s 1) not the suggested place so I always have change it, and 2) always about #10 on the list. WHY? I hate the black icon. Are we ever going to be given a way to use coins again? I borderline hate this app now and that makes me sad. Fix it.",

          "body": "Thanks for the new feature that allows you to initiate a Swarm check-in from the photos app. HOWEVER, it is messing up the check in time if you upload a photo after you leave the time zone where you took the photo. Example: I took a picture at ***11:30am brunch in Lyon*** but forgot to check in. I flew to NYC and then finally shared it with Swarm to create the check-in. ***The Lyon check-in logged on Swarm as 5:30pm!*** Look, Lyon is 6hrs ahead of NYC, so I would understand if the check-in showed as 5:30am. I strongly disagree with that approach, but it would not be a bug. However 5:30pm IS A BUG any way you look at it — it was not 5:30pm in either Lyon OR New York when the photo was taken. ***Looks like you added 6 hours instead of subtracting.*** THE SOLUTION IS TO MATCH THE CHECK-IN TIME TO THE LOCAL TIME IN THE PLACE WHERE THE PHOTO WAS TAKEN! NO TIME CONVERSIONS ARE WARRANTED. I REPEAT, NO TIME CONVERSIONS ARE WARRANTED. At the very least, fix the bug because your conversion math is wrong.",
