  1. 5/5Great App

You really must read the book...soak on it. Figure out your starting weights and then get going. I did weight training in my 20's and I wish I would have had this book. Now I am mid 50's and everything is a struggle...workout recovery, injury recovery, etc. However, if you take it slow, take time to recover, stretch each workout day, reread the book occasionally, then you can set yourself up for a lifetime of greater strength and fitness. This app goes a long way toward helping with the goal. It is easy to use. Look through everything before you start and backup to the cloud weekly. Update: still a great app for starting out. It does all the thinking...warm up weights and reps, timer, etc. The big drawback is when you are ready to move beyond the novice SS routine, the app is not capable. You cannot increase reps beyond 5 nor sets beyond 3. So if you move to Texas method or H-L-M, then you must find another app. I have found nothing like this one where I set my work set weight and the app fills in warmup, timer, etc. So yes it is a great app, but you will either quit or move beyond novice which means finding another adequate, but less than desirable, app.

  2. 5/5Who This App Is Not For:

Do you enjoy a life of disappointment and unmet goals? Do you prefer to envy and resent the strongest, most capable people around you instead of becoming one? Do you enjoy having parts of your body (low back, shoulders, hips, knees, core) failing to meet the demands of your daily life? Do you want to be easy to kill, and useless in general? DO NOT BUY THIS APP, it will change your life For anyone else, if you are not strong already (bodyweight bench, 150% bodyweight deadlift, bodyweight squat, 5 dead-hang pull-ups according to Dan John) there is nothing better that you could do to improve your physical performance in any pursuit—athletics, work, leisure, sex, just looking good—than purchasing this app, which contains all the information you need to start on the Starting Strength novice progression today. (Do NOT do Stronglifts 5x5–you can read comparisons all over the place. Yes it’s free, but it’s free for a reason) To do the SS program you’ll need a 45lb barbell, various weight plates, a squat rack, and eventually a chin-up bar. Nearly any commercial gym will have the necessary equipment, but most of it can be purchased used for use in your garage for the price of a year or two of a commercial gym membership (that you’ll only use for a month anyway). And if you need advice, form checks, or motivation the Starting Strength forums are very active and helpful; “Rip” himself is there answering questions all the time. Why are you still reading this? Buy it already!

  3. 4/5Excellent app

The timers and counters are very useful. A written log is always better but in this modern age our mobile devices have become part of our daily life even for logging data and information. I hate to say it but if this is where our future is heading then we to take these things more seriously and continue to push for improvements in these apps. I love that it accurately calculates your warm up reps for you. Still would be nice to be able to customize reps and sets for intermediate exercises and add exercises to the workout like barbell rows. Maybe even log personal info about rest, recovery, diet, or just how I’m feeling that day (basically eliminating the written log). The StrongLifts 5x5 app does do some of these things and is much more intuitive, but it does not calculate warm ups as accurately as this app. Also having digital access to key pages from the book and video Gifs of the Exercises is incredibly helpful. Keep it up starting strength, always room for improvement but this app is on the money. Thanks.

  4. 4/5Please fix the clock and fix unit conversion!

I recently moved from StrongLifts 5x5 to Starting Strength and I must say this app is great. However, the timer is not working for me on my iPhone X. Either the start button is missing or it resets to 0 and I can’t change it or start it. It’s just a mess. This is one of the reasons I purchased the app to save me opening the stopwatch it on my phone. Also, I travel around the world a lot. When switching between pounds and kilograms in different gyms it would be really REALLY useful if I can easily switch the units and it converts the units in the history and my current workout. Instead it resets my workout data, but leaves the previous number in lbs and uses it for Kg. Why not just convert what’s there? In fact this alone nearly made me give this app three stars since I have to manually convert it all myself and correct it in the app. I am curious how fast the developers will respond to this, if they see it, since I’ve had a very good experience with another certain app.

  5. 5/5Great App, could improve

I found this app very useful for the novice progression. It is easy to use, to the point. It lets you have your data, and has good privacy policies. I didn’t encounter a lot of bugs. Five stars. But there is room for improvement. For one, it would be great for the app to accommodate variations that the books actually recommend for some, particularly older lifters me) and women. From Rippentoe’s remarks older trainees seem to be a core demographic for them, so this deficit is surprising. Sets of three (for women), dropping power cleans for older lifters, lat pull downs, etc. these are all found in the Novice programing so it seems a novice program app should have them. The other improvement is to accommodate intermediate programing elements: 5x5s, backoff sets, rep progression, auxiliary and assistance exercises. This is more complex, but it would be a welcome upgrade.
