1. 3/5OK for file transfers, please remove constant subscription reminder

   As an owner of a previous version, I was unpleasantly surprised to see the change to a subscription-based model for the additional features. I use this app solely to allow for a common interface when transferring photos from different wifi-enabled cameras and SD cards. Even though I do not use the additional features (and retain the current functionality that I had already paid for), I dislike the bright orange icon that now sits on the screen next to the options. I expect something like that to inform me of an issue that needs addressed -such as file transfer failures, low storage space, login problems, etc. Instead, it appears to be nothing more than an attention getter to keep pointing me to the subscription page.

2. 5/5Keenai is Dead. Long Live Shuttersnitch

   I was panicking because I had allowed the Keenai app to be archived by iOS. Thanks Apple. I had not used my Canon SLR in many months and when I tried to link my Eyefi Mobi card I saw that Keenai was archived with no way of installing it again. I’m not a fan of paid storage for photos since I already pay annually for MSOffice/OneDrive and have not approached my TB of storage. Anyway I decided if I could get Shuttersnitch to sync to the Eyefi Mobi card it would be worth $3 a month to have instant access to photos on my phone to be able to share and save. After frantically trying the methods outlined in the help forums I was able to get the card to sync. One thing I missed in the instructions is that in order for Shuttersnitch to receive files you must create a Collection (folder). I assumed the app would create one for me on the fly. That’s what I get for assuming. I’m happy now and will gladly pay the money just so I don’t have to swap SD cards. The other features are a bonus.

3. 2/5Not The Best Value

   It’s a nice app, it works once you can figure out how to set it up. The instructions are ok, but not very clear. I was able to get it after some doing, plus my tech knowledge. But for someone who is not so tech savvy, who just wants to wirelessly transfer shots real time, this app is a bit cumbersome to set up. Which is to be expected given that it works with so many platforms. However, the pics come through relatively fast, it gives some nice options for quick edits. It’s a nice way to review shots right away instead of having to wait for post. But $30+ a year? Seriously? Additionally, it only works on one device at a time which, in my case, is unfortunate. I have two tablets, one of which is really nice, so I don’t relish letting a client hold onto it, I’d rather use the nice one myself and let them hold the not so nice one for review. What escapes me is way it is only subscription based. Most of the features that people would use this for are “in house”, so outside of the user, there is no reason for anyone else to get involved in the operations. Unless your shots first go to some server then come back to you. If that’s the case then they have some serious legal issues of privacy that is not addressed in setup. Plus, if the shots are indeed going to a server, why can’t more than one device access simultaneously? I mean really, one is simply transferring images from a camera to a tablet or phone. But I guess they are content with holding people’s needs hostage and laughing all the way to the bank. Why there is not a choice of a simple transfer version for which you pay a small one time fee is beyond me. I guess they skipped that lesson in business school. I guess I will have to continue getting ripped off until I find a more sensible solution, at which point I will drop this app like a hot nail and run.

4. 5/5Excellent tool for serious photographers

   As I noted in an earlier review, Shuttersnitch is a 5-star product, though not for the casual or non-tech-savvy user. This is an advanced and highly configurable product with a ton of features. There’s a non-trivial learning curve. Don’t expect to spend 2 mins and be done. But once you’ve got the SW dialed in and configured to play nicely with your unique photographic/network/etc setup, it works flawlessly. As a professional shooter, I use Shuttersnitch to upload in the field from my Z9 via an IOS device to various cloud resources, including FTP sites as well as Dropbox and Google Drive. I’d note that customer support, over on the Shuttersnitch user forum, is outstanding. For a specific kind of user, with specific needs, Shuttersnitch is a must-have app.

5. 5/5Does what is does better than any iPad alternative

   I've been a user since 2020 and Shuttersnitch does exactly what is sets out to do and has a very responsive developer who is active on the support forum. Wi-fi functionality depends on your camera's wi-fi abilities. Some camera makers have more advanced wi-fi than others. The captioning and metadata control, along with the ability to create templates/presets makes captioning a breeze. The built in ftp and connectivity to other file systems from Google drive and Dropbox to Flickr, Smug Mug or Zenfolio should meet amateur and professional needs. Shuttersnitch on an IPad the need for a laptop to run Photo Mechanic for less than the cost of a coffee a month, and constant frequent updates.
