  1. 4/5Session

Session is one of the most privacy-focused messaging apps available today. What I truly appreciate about it is the strong commitment to anonymity and security—no phone number required, no personal data attached, and messages are end-to-end encrypted. In a world where digital privacy is constantly under threat, Session creates a safe space for communication without compromising user identity. The interface is clean, simple, and easy to navigate, making secure messaging accessible to everyone. That said, there is still room for improvement. Adding more features such as customizable status updates, enhanced group options, and expanded personalization settings would make the experience even better and more competitive with other messaging platforms. Additionally, voice calls sometimes take a bit longer to connect when picking up, which can interrupt the flow of conversation. Improving call connection speed would significantly enhance usability. Overall, Session is a great app for anyone who values privacy and secure communication. With a few feature upgrades and performance improvements, it has the potential to become one of the best private messaging platforms available.

  2. 4/5Suggestions and a bug

Please add support for: - An option for a delay on the screen lock requiring authentication to get back into the app (30 seconds, one minute, five minutes, etc.) - Larger versions of the emoji reactions to messages; they’re super tiny right now - changing the font size via the iOS Text Size feature in the Control Center - Also, at least the iPad version of the app has a bug in which it often doesn’t prevent the screen from locking during a video call; the screen dims and then eventually shuts off, both on low-power mode and regular mode. Re-unlocking the iPad and going back to the video doesn’t fix the problem; it just occurs again. It would appear that the bug is triggered when the user minimizes the video to look at some thing in the chat and then goes back to the video. The only solution I have found so far is to quit the app and restart it.

  3. 5/5Superiority in terms of privacy and security.

Session App developers have made deliberate decisions to prioritize privacy at the core of what Session App is and will remain. Many people fail to understand that sacrificing features and sometimes usability can lead to superior privacy. This is the cost of privacy. Despite this, they are excellently managing their existing private and secure system to integrate new features while simultaneously enhancing usability and speed without compromising on privacy or security under pressure from some users to add more features. I closely monitor Session App’s development and genuinely hope they continue to prioritize implementing further secure measures rather than compromising them for features or other related aspects. This is why Session App has garnered a robust reputation for security and privacy, making it a clear choice over apps like Telegram or Signal in those areas. These deliberate choices benefit everyone, including Session App itself, by maintaining its position as a security powerhouse. Keep up the incredible work!

  4. 3/5Great for privacy - when it works

I almost only use this app because of the privacy it offers. Yes, I’d like to be able to edit the user’s name BEFORE they accept the chat so I remember who they are instead of looking like an idiot and asking what their username/profile name was again. Sure there’s the occasional issue where you don’t get notifications that you received a message. But now?!? The last couple of weeks it’s been barely working. Messages sit in “sending” for up to 15 mins! Before finally going through. And I keep getting syncing, failed to sync messages. I uninstalled the windows app - didn’t change anything. Uninstalled reinstalled the iOS app - thought it worked as all my messages went through - then the hang up started again within the hour. Other users I talk to say they have the same issue. Their messages are stuck in a massive hang before finally going through. You have a great service offering privacy in a time and world where privacy doesn’t exist anymore. Please fix the issues though.

  5. 5/5Good for Secure Messages, but Quirky Interface

The attraction is the secure protocol and not needing to use phone numbers, emails, or other personalized information to “create an account.” Credentials are swapped by a number of means, but navigating to those spots can be a little wanderous through the UI. But, once discovered is easy enough to find again. The chat interface feels familiar and is responsive. Noticed that when receiving previews of pictures that sometimes the image is shifted to the left leaving an artifact that looks like a white bar on the right. Opening the image shows it transferred fine. The app needs a tiny bit more polish but is extremely usable and functions well for real world purposes. This is the app you want when you want Signal but don’t want to use your phone number and are willing to take on the slight extra work that means. Security folks embrace this way of thinking.
