1. 4/5Game changer app for jazz musicians! However…

   As a jazz musician myself, the Quartet apps are so much more motivating to practice with than iReal Pro. The fact that these are REAL musicians playing these tunes is SO good; it’s basically like having the Jamey Aebersold tracks on your phone! However, I’ve noticed quite a few gripes that are preventing me from giving it a full 5 stars. One thing that I think NEEDS to be fixed is a pretty major issue when you’re changing keys. I get that it’s basically putting a pitch shifter on the recording, but why do the drums have to be pitch shifted as well? That alone makes the tracks sound really tinny as you go to a “higher” key than the original and that should not be happening (iReal does not have this issue). Also, I personally think the prices of exporting the track stems is a bit much…especially after already paying for the apps themselves. I do understand the distribution licensing, but I feel that we should be able to export at least the tracks without the soloist in the quartet for personal use. Other than that, AMAZING apps, these are definitely replacing iReal as a practice tool for me!

2. 4/5Great idea but needs some refinement

   I LOVED the concept at once, I was sold in minutes. I don’t mind the price and buying more tunes either. What I think is a total miss is that most songs are sampled for their “original” tempo. For PRACTICE one will typically start working at a slower, often even MUCH slower tempo… but the sample rate (recording quality) is just about sufficient for the original tempo. Only reducing the tempo 10% results in a clearly audible loss of quality “gargle”. I feel, that for it to be a PRACTICE, the sample quality should be sufficient for 50% slower tempo, especially on faster pieces. A good example is Autumn Leaves: This is one of the key practice and study standards and it’s supplied here at a whooping 180 Bpm. It is rarely even played at that tempo and at a practice-learning tempo of 100 or even 85 the sound has lost all it’s allure, all “gargly” and wobbly. This needs to be fixed. Another suggestion is that the tempo control should not only be by + & - but either a drop-menu or a write box. A drop menu would also be nice on the Key-selection. Thanks!… J-D. Sauser

3. 5/5Excellent jazz play along

   Great app with music played by real musicians. The advantage of this is huge. You get the high quality and real groove of a live performance, with all the variations in texture and rhythms, along with more sophisticated chords and riffs, plus song intros and a horn if you like. The band plays the actual bass patterns in songs like Footprints and All Blues - things you generally don’t get in synthetic apps like iReal Pro. Although you can modestly change speed and key signature, I find the range is limited by a degradation in sound quality that creeps in when you stray too far from the original. This is an inherent problem when you work from a single live recording and try to stretch the pitch and/or speed. A real band playing in a different key would also use a different set of voicings rather than simply play every note higher or lower. This is where iReal Pro with its synthesized sound has the advantage. But if you stay close to the original recording, Quartet is by far the best play-along app I’ve found.

4. 3/5Endings? Not so much

   Okay. The app is good. Definitely worth the price. Ia couple of things. First, repeats of a section are carbon copies. The fills and things are cool and sound good, but you’re going to hear the same parts if you have multiple choruses. But the big issue for me is endings. I was so excited when it said endings, but so far in my exploring I have found 0 actual endings. No new chord progression, no synchronized rhythms or hits, no piano riffs. Every song’s ending is just a hung chord. It sounds very awkward on some of them. Too bad. Still, it’s worth picking up. Feel is good. The organization is good. Took me a while to find the different combos but they switch seemlessly. As far as I can tell, they are not different arrangements, just subtractive arranging. To be fair, I haven’t explored it fully, but that’s my 2c.

5. 4/5So much to like - but needs better UI

   First the positives, the tracks sound great a really fun to play along too, and so much better than the midi based tools. Much more dynamic and lifelike. Love it. That said, the interface leaves much to be desired. You can make playlists (which I do a lot to group different sets together) but you can’t actually see the songs listed. It just takes you to the first song and you have to click through each song individually - which can open other bundled apps. Somewhat chaotic and seems like a pretty easy addition and hopefully will be in soon. You can also favorite tracks but I’m not sure where these are even listed. I can’t find it anywhere. And because it’s 4 apps (I got the bundle) it can do some weird things jumping back and forth between when you search a tune. Doesn’t always go to the tune, sometimes just changes apps. Bit rough but I assume they’ll work the kinks out. But the overall quality of tracks -which is the most important - is great.
