1. 5/5The best weather app (tried all of them, I think)

   I am a recreational boater in Southern Georgia. I own a powerboat and I sail with a club. Accurate predictions of tides, wind and swells are crucial in planning our boating schedule. We have 8ft tides, an occasional windstorm, and moderate swells that still can affect comfort of people on the boat. For the last year I have been using PredictWind to plan our trips, sometimes several days in advance. The wind and wave prediction models have been surprisingly accurate in our region, and along with the convenient tide table they make trip planning easy. Thank you!

2. 5/5The Forecast Alerts Should Be Thought Of Differently

   I use your app constantly for sailing and I commend you for a job well done (as I was a programmer for 50 years). As a suggestion, I would like the Forecast Alert be more precise and here is why. If you sail and are going out for the day, one hour that the parameters that are set up by the user meets the predicted wind speed, etc., the user receives an alert. But the alert might be for just the first hour and the rest of the day there might be too little or too much wind. The set up of the alert should be if the user sets the alert from 10:00am - 2:00pm, the parameters should be met for all 4 hours and then an alert would sent out. It would just add a very powerful element to your app for all the day sailors out there that could use your app more efficiently. Just a thought!

3. 3/5Good but realize the limitations

   Predictwind gives mariners easy access to the world’s leading weather models. It’s easy to use and well laid out. It also wildly oversells what it can really do for you. Global weather models do not account for many local factors that shape the weather you actually experience and are only really useful in combination with other information, especially professional meteorological forecasts. So features like weather routing should be taken with a shaker of salt since a carefully computed optimal route is useless if the actual wind is 50 degrees off from the predicted direction. So I’m glad I have it but it’s just another data point rather than a reliable predictor of weather.

4. 1/5Beware of deceptive pricing

   I sprung for the $249/quarter subscription because I had a difficult passage to make where weather information was critical. After the passage was completed, I forgot to cancel my subscription. Without any advance notice, PredictWind charged my credit card an additional $249. A more customer-focused (ethical) company would have given some advance notice, but no. Ok, my bad — I should have remembered to cancel the service. I then went to the site to discontinue the auto billing, and I found that the only way is to “downgrade” to the free service, which I did. Now I am helping a friend do another difficult passage and I find that I cannot use the professional features of the site, even though I paid for them. Evil. I swear, this company will never,ever get another penny from me.

5. 5/5a bit non-intuitive to cancel but exceptional customer service

   have used this app for a few years Sailing in the Caribbean. I no longer have the boat and he app only allows auto renew, but I didn’t cancel it before the auto renew. Logged in through the website and tried to downgrade to free to cancel it, but it simply went lighter and didn’t seem to complete. Went to the app on my phone, and was able to delete my account. I received an email from customer service, refunding the renewal and explaining the auto-renewal, and handing my comments to development to see if they can improve. The app is good, but customer service exceptional, earning a 5 star rating.
