5/5Waited 20 years for something like this!
I’m an avid music listener and part time music producer and can say without a shadow of a doubt that this app makes it tremendously easier and convenient to store, share and play all my music from any of my iOS devices! I am finally back in control of my music library like in the old iPod days. The new era of music steaming services is destroying our ability to chose how we want to purchase and experience music in our terms. This app gives you that control back in your hands. Personally, I still and always will prefer to OWN a copy of the music I want to listen to so I will still buy CDs (sometimes digital downloads as well with no DRM) so that I can listen to it whenever and however I chose. Monthly subscriptions to music just don’t make sense to me the way I like to experience music. All the music I have purchased since high school, which I still have, is in my music library and continues to grow over time as I see fit. Make no mistake, this is the future of music, not streaming . Don’t let corporations tell you how to consume music. You have the final say in that.

5/5CarPlay version is awesome !!
I have been with Plex for quite a while and have been hoping for a CarPlay version for the past couple of years. This wish was finally granted a couple of days ago. I took PlexAmp for a test drive down a rocky mountain canyon where the LTE signal is intermittent at best. But the application played music uninterrupted for the entire route. For me this is the acid test of this kind of an app. Plex has done a marvelous job in bringing us a truly mobile and CarPlay worthy app. I can’t say enough good things about their effort… UPDATE: Plex recently had problems with security, which resulted in having to change passwords. In the process, my entire library became detached, and I could not reattach it on the computer. Yesterday I created a whole new Plex server on my M4 Mac mini. That has worked out perfectly as far as the server is concerned. Plexamp still works beautifully on my iPhone. But I am sorry to reveal that the CarPlay version with the advent of iOS 26 needs retooling. It looks terrible. It still works as good as it ever did… And that is the main thing… But I hope Plex will update the aesthetics of the CarPlay version soon.

I was in love with Google Play Music for years and it was central to my daily life as a way to listen to my music collection across all my devices and on the go. When it closed up shop last year, I spent a long time researching my options for a replacement. I settled on Plex and the Plexamp app as my choice and have found it to be great, far better than GPM was in terms of visual UI and sound quality. However, there are a few features that don’t quite fit the high standard that the product sets in most ways. Other reviews here have mentioned the lack of repeat functionality, but I want to point out the big need for improvements in the equalizer. As I listen across multiple systems, it is necessary to use eq to get consistent sound. The eq doesn’t have presets or allow saved settings or profiles meaning that I have to manually set the eq points each time I switch systems. This seems primitive compared to the rest of the app. Hopefully this can be improved.

4/5Great App - CarPlay integration could be better
I have a music library of ~13,000 tracks, a mix of FLAC & MP3 ripped CDs and DRM-free digital purchases, all stored into a cheap mini-PC running the Plex server. PlexAmp is absolutely great to access ‘my’ music on the go: good, intuitive interface, with the right balance of features to keep it simple to use. I am dropping one star due to a (car brand) specific issue with CarPlay: some car manufacturers limit CarPlay ‘lists’ to 12 items when the car is on the move…. Understandable, this is for safety purpose, so that the driver does have to scroll through interminable lists. So when driving my Toyota (they’re not the only brand doing this), I can only select Artists from A to L (or K, if some are #), I can only select from the first 12 tracks of an album, etc. If I stop at a red light, I have access to everything…. Very frustrating! Ok, it’s not PlexAmp’s fault… but the App could be smarter and offer an option to wrap these long lists of Artists, tracks, into multi-level (nested) lists of 12-max lists length. As it is, I just revert to using my phone when driving… which is more dangerous in the end!

2/5Was great. Has gotten buggy.
This has been a great media player and, in fact, had become the primary way I access my local library since iTunes became Apple Music and started pushing cloud too hard. Unfortunately, there are a couple of crippling bugs that never seem to be addressed despite being several years old. Most notably, songs will lose their titles and other meta data for no apparent reason, despite the files being completely and accurately tagged. (I’m meticulous about my tags.) This is particularly a problem with Apple Lossless files, but also affects MP3s, seemingly at random. It’s also a pain that Plex disregards the priority settings/order of meta information and will replace local embedded tags with downloaded information when it feels like it but without any identifiable pattern. Recently, PlexAmp decided that my entire music library was unavailable even though the server said it was fine. I did a complete rescan of the entire thing and that seemed to jar loose whatever had been causing the problem, but still has the track names missing. This was an excellent player and hopefully will get a little more attention from the team, but I’ve gone back to Apple Music for most things.

"body": "I’m an avid music listener and part time music producer and can say without a shadow of a doubt that this app makes it tremendously easier and convenient to store, share and play all my music from any of my iOS devices! I am finally back in control of my music library like in the old iPod days. The new era of music steaming services is destroying our ability to chose how we want to purchase and experience music in our terms. This app gives you that control back in your hands. Personally, I still and always will prefer to OWN a copy of the music I want to listen to so I will still buy CDs (sometimes digital downloads as well with no DRM) so that I can listen to it whenever and however I chose. Monthly subscriptions to music just don’t make sense to me the way I like to experience music. All the music I have purchased since high school, which I still have, is in my music library and continues to grow over time as I see fit. Make no mistake, this is the future of music, not streaming . Don’t let corporations tell you how to consume music. You have the final say in that.",

"title": "CarPlay version is awesome !!",
"body": "I have been with Plex for quite a while and have been hoping for a CarPlay version for the past couple of years. This wish was finally granted a couple of days ago. I took PlexAmp for a test drive down a rocky mountain canyon where the LTE signal is intermittent at best. But the application played music uninterrupted for the entire route. For me this is the acid test of this kind of an app. Plex has done a marvelous job in bringing us a truly mobile and CarPlay worthy app. I can’t say enough good things about their effort… UPDATE: Plex recently had problems with security, which resulted in having to change passwords. In the process, my entire library became detached, and I could not reattach it on the computer. Yesterday I created a whole new Plex server on my M4 Mac mini. That has worked out perfectly as far as the server is concerned. Plexamp still works beautifully on my iPhone. But I am sorry to reveal that the CarPlay version with the advent of iOS 26 needs retooling. It looks terrible. It still works as good as it ever did… And that is the main thing… But I hope Plex will update the aesthetics of the CarPlay version soon.",

"body": "I was in love with Google Play Music for years and it was central to my daily life as a way to listen to my music collection across all my devices and on the go. When it closed up shop last year, I spent a long time researching my options for a replacement. I settled on Plex and the Plexamp app as my choice and have found it to be great, far better than GPM was in terms of visual UI and sound quality. However, there are a few features that don’t quite fit the high standard that the product sets in most ways. Other reviews here have mentioned the lack of repeat functionality, but I want to point out the big need for improvements in the equalizer. As I listen across multiple systems, it is necessary to use eq to get consistent sound. The eq doesn’t have presets or allow saved settings or profiles meaning that I have to manually set the eq points each time I switch systems. This seems primitive compared to the rest of the app. Hopefully this can be improved.",

"body": "I have a music library of ~13,000 tracks, a mix of FLAC & MP3 ripped CDs and DRM-free digital purchases, all stored into a cheap mini-PC running the Plex server. PlexAmp is absolutely great to access ‘my’ music on the go: good, intuitive interface, with the right balance of features to keep it simple to use. I am dropping one star due to a (car brand) specific issue with CarPlay: some car manufacturers limit CarPlay ‘lists’ to 12 items when the car is on the move…. Understandable, this is for safety purpose, so that the driver does have to scroll through interminable lists. So when driving my Toyota (they’re not the only brand doing this), I can only select Artists from A to L (or K, if some are #), I can only select from the first 12 tracks of an album, etc. If I stop at a red light, I have access to everything…. Very frustrating! Ok, it’s not PlexAmp’s fault… but the App could be smarter and offer an option to wrap these long lists of Artists, tracks, into multi-level (nested) lists of 12-max lists length. As it is, I just revert to using my phone when driving… which is more dangerous in the end!",

"body": "This has been a great media player and, in fact, had become the primary way I access my local library since iTunes became Apple Music and started pushing cloud too hard. Unfortunately, there are a couple of crippling bugs that never seem to be addressed despite being several years old. Most notably, songs will lose their titles and other meta data for no apparent reason, despite the files being completely and accurately tagged. (I’m meticulous about my tags.) This is particularly a problem with Apple Lossless files, but also affects MP3s, seemingly at random. It’s also a pain that Plex disregards the priority settings/order of meta information and will replace local embedded tags with downloaded information when it feels like it but without any identifiable pattern. Recently, PlexAmp decided that my entire music library was unavailable even though the server said it was fine. I did a complete rescan of the entire thing and that seemed to jar loose whatever had been causing the problem, but still has the track names missing. This was an excellent player and hopefully will get a little more attention from the team, but I’ve gone back to Apple Music for most things.",
