  1. 5/5Boosting Productivity: A review of Opal: Screen Time for Focus

Opal: Screen Time for Focus has become an indispensable tool in my quest for productivity and mindful technology usage. From the moment I started using it, I noticed a significant improvement in my ability to stay focused and on task. The app's interface is clean, intuitive, and easy to navigate, making it simple to set up and customize according to my preferences. Setting daily screen time limits and scheduling focused time intervals has helped me regain control over my digital habits. I appreciate the flexibility to adjust settings based on my changing needs and commitments. One standout feature of Opal is its ability to block distracting apps during designated focus sessions. This has been a game-changer for me, as it prevents me from mindlessly scrolling through social media or getting lost in email when I should be concentrating on important tasks. Furthermore, the app provides insightful usage statistics, allowing me to track my progress over time and identify areas for improvement. The visual representation of my screen time habits serves as a powerful motivator to stay disciplined and make positive changes. Overall, Opal: Screen Time for Focus has exceeded my expectations and become an essential tool in my daily routine. Whether you're a student, professional, or anyone looking to reclaim control over their digital life, I highly recommend giving this app a try.

  2. 5/5I wish I could use this app on Windows! 🤩😩

I spent a lot of time sinking into pornography, wanting to focus on studying, but every time I felt stressed, my mind craved dopamine. Coming from completely quitting addictions, my mind found pornography as its escape corner (a terrible one). I tried many apps, and none allowed me true focus like Opal did. (My mind hates it, and my soul thanks it.) In this digital era, where the junk information we feed our minds has created negative mental circuits, Opal is a solid app that, with its DEEP FOCUS mode, truly blocks ALL dumb scrolling (by setting a limit on how much time I can use social media in my case) or blocking unwanted content (in this case, adult content in the browser). Even uninstalling the app doesn’t remove the block—it’s brutal. That said, DEEP FOCUS mode is only available for premium users, but honestly, I didn’t think twice about paying; it’s WORTH IT. Now I have it on both my phones, and I wish I could put it on my PC (Windows) because, besides loving how it looks, it’s undoubtedly the tool that helps me the most in my journey to a better version of myself. Of course, this is alongside exercise and education, but without a doubt, Opal is a tool that helps you grow and use your phone as a tool that connects you to your best self, not one that pulls you away from it. Thank you so much, and I truly hope to see the app available for Windows soon.

  3. 5/5Useful til it’s not

I’ve used this app for two months now and it works great if you want to add an extra barrier to your social media consumption but for me personally it has not worked how I hoped. I don’t like that it notifies me 5 mins before my app limits is about to hit because I just go in and change the time from 1 hour to 2 hours and so on. I also struggle a lot with breaking the habit of mindless scrolling when I have some free time and I get sucked it and that’s when I start to change the opal settings. I would like if they could have the option to turn off the notifications when they tell your snooze session is going to end or when the app limit will hit. I would also like to choose a level weekly or daily. Maybe have like a limited snooze time for example in a day you can only snooze for 20 mins total etc. or you can only change the settings 1-2 times per week. Make it a little harder for those who struggle the most. Also, I would like to get a notification or something while I am in certain apps. For example after 3 mins of being on the app you can send a notification for me to be aware that I’ve spent too much time or that im wasting my time. Or something that can help stop the mindless scrolling even when it’s during the permitted period. Not so much avoid it (like blocking the app) but to minimize it

  4. 3/5Leaving this app after some time

I used to have a Pro account for this app and found it really useful before the last major update. I liked that you could configure it in a way where it would ask you what your intention was if you wanted to unblock apps for a certain amount of time. It helped me be mindful about what I was doing. They got rid of that feature now, which was a huge bummer for me but not a dealbreaker. I understand that in the last major update they went from a VPN to using Screen Time, which made it easier for them to block the apps themselves, and not just the data. This is helpful. However, it seems like a huge oversight on their behalf that now I’m somehow still able to access social media websites on my web browser. So when Opal blocks my Instagram app, I can still go on my safari and access Instagram in no time. I reached out to their customer support for a solution. Apparently you can’t block specific websites, only the ones your screen time deems as “most visited” ones. There’s no way around this other than blocking every single website on your phone and then just manually adding the ones you wanna visit which is unrealistic, as I oftentimes work from my phone and I don’t know exactly which sites I need to go on. So this app virtually doesn’t work anymore. I can still go on Facebook or Instagram or any of those sites through my browser. It’s useless. Unfortunately I can’t get past this and I’ll have to find another app to help me block social media

  5. 4/5Already Changed me in One Day

I have used iPhone’s Screen Time before to restrict and control my doom scrolling, but it wasn’t very effective. Opal gives me the strict controls I need to resist and prevent opening my social media apps, especially when those apps often contribute to my depression and negativity. The wallpapers that pop up are also quite motivating to close the social media app as soon as I open it without thinking. I just wish that Opal was better at introducing me to all the functions it has. I didn’t even know that there were sleep schedulers or places to always allow some apps (like my calculator or calendar) until I was just randomly tapping buttons to navigate the app myself! Another improvement I’d like to see is actually getting to open the rock I achieve myself. It was sooo satisfying to unlock my first gemstone by tapping on it to break chunks of gray rocks off. I just wish that I could have done the same with the spring 2026 and opal Pro rocks that I earned by joining. Seeing them appear in my profile without getting to open them was a bit of a surprise and boring. I’m glad that the rest of the rocks we earn do get that celebration, where we get to break off the gray cover of rock to reveal the beautiful stone inside. Best of all, I can re-play it! I really appreciate Opal’s mission and what it’s helping me achieve! I just wish that it worked for Windows desktop too, so that I can track my video games.

A new Opal. Opal has always worked when you set the rules. 4.0 adds something new: Opal can now read your day on its own: it learns when you sleep, when you focus, when you scroll. It steps in when it helps and stays out of the way the rest of the time. Heads up, two things have moved: • Blocks are now called Rules. Same feature, new name. You'll find everything in the My Apps tab,. • Breaks are now called Unblock. You can unblock at any time from the My Apps tab. What's new: • Timer. One tap to focus for a set block of time, when you need to study or get in the zone. • Opal Score. A daily reading on Focus, Sleep, and Rest. • Sounds. A library of focus mixes and ambient tracks. • New MileStones. Belts for attention, earned through real focus. New ones available. • Autofocus. Intelligent nudges that keep you on track when you're distracted. You asked, we built: • Overlapping rules, so you can stack them. • Always Allowed, so Opal never blocks your essentials like health, maps, or banking. • Never Allowed, so you can set your own permanent restrictions. • Single-app unblock, so you can open one app without breaking the rule. • Digital Detox, longer timers for a few days at a time. Now in 9 languages, including Simplified Chinese. As always, share feedback through Settings, then Support. We read all of it. Let us know if any of your favourite features are missing, we removed some things but don't worry - they'll be back soon! If you're on X, feel free to like, retweet, or comment on our launch announcement: https://x.com/opalapp The mission is the same. Align computers with human wellbeing. 4.0 is a big step in that direction and there will be a lot more to come!

We've received a huge amount of feedback on our major update, and I've been reading it all. Thank you. What's been especially encouraging is how many people are loving Autofocus. We're seeing some of the strongest reactions we've had to a feature in a long time. At the same time, we've also heard frustration from many longtime users. It's absolutely fair. The good news is we're moving fast. We've been shipping updates every few days, fixing issues, restoring workflows, and acting on your feedback as quickly as we can. Our goal is to build a product that can help today's Opal users, but eventually also billions of people build a better relationship with technology. The excitement around Autofocus and the new direction gives us confidence we're building something better. The feedback from our longtime users is giving us real fuel to make it better, faster. We're grateful for both. Thanks for sticking with us and helping us build the next chapter of Opal. New since the major update 4.0 - App Uninstall Protection. Stop yourself from deleting Opal while you're in a block. Turn it on in Settings. - Opal Labs, starting with Speedbump. Opt into experimental features, with a home card that shows when Speedbump is active. - Hard Mode for Timers. Lock yourself in for the full session, no early exits. - Live Activities for Timers and Unblocks. Track your session right from the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island. - Mini-games in the Waiting Room while you wait out an unblock. - Recent Timers, so you can restart a session in one tap. - More Shortcuts support. Start and stop timers with App Intents and automations. - "Never Allowed" section when picking what to block, for apps you always want locked. - Streak-loss warning before you disable your last active rule. Improvements - Long term users keep unlimited Rules. If you came from Opal before v.4.0, you'll get unlimited Rules, no paywall. - Smoother performance: better frame rates, lower CPU use, and less heat. - Timers can now start with no apps selected. - Redesigned profile stats and a clearer score breakdown, with unblocks now factored into your Focus Score. - Smarter Autofocus: interventions are correctly per-app, with clearer notification copy. - New Digital Detox durations (8 hours, 1 day, 2 days, 5 days) - App and rule sheets now close cleanly after you unblock. - More translation coverage, including a new Polish localization and improved Chinese. Fixes - Fixed adult content and private browsing enabled by default. You can now set it from Never Allowed or settings. - The Waiting Room no longer cuts off your background music unless you unmute it. - Fixed a login issue that could lock some people out, and a separate bug that could wrongly cost you a streak. - Clearer sign-in: better auth error messages, and your email and phone now carry over when you switch between sign in and sign up. - Stopped a repeated Screen Time permission prompt and fixed lost-permission detection. - Fixed several crashes, including when editing a rule that was actively blocking. - Average screen time now compares against your real average instead of a fixed 12 hours. - Fixed the screen time chart showing more than 24 hours. - Fixed scheduled Rules showing "0 apps blocked" when you were actually blocking everything. - Stopped duplicate Autofocus notifications. - Fixed clipped rule cards and various layout and alignment issues. ps: keep the feedback coming! Directly from contact us in Settings is the best. Keep your Opal up to date by going to the app store and hitting "update", you'll get the latest fixes quicker
