  1. 5/5Good for improving speed of note recognition

Aside from taking lessons when I was 10, and music in high school, my music reading skills are limited to none. I never took the time to really sit down and study reading and learning the notes. While I know the names of the basic notes, I’ve always had trouble being able to identify them quickly. This has resulted in my timing being off and having trouble following music. I’ve only spent about an hour with this app, but so far I feel it is helping improve note recognition and speed. I still get flustered and an make a lot of errors, but I do notice an improvement so far. When you retry the lesson, it appears the new attempt randomly changes the notes, with the exception of the note you are learning, which prevents you from improving your score due to pattern memorization.

  2. 5/5Amazing!

I do have some experience playing piano, took lessons about 10 years ago. Have always struggled with sight reading. Tried several apps before but none of them helped. This app is wonderful to teach you not only the notes but actually how to read them as if you were really looking at sheet music! I find that I’m not looking at the buttons on the bottom, but rather at the notes, which is exactly as it should be and is building good habits. The audio also helps, it’s a bit like practicing on a basic electric keyboard. The timer is also really helpful at building good habits and keeping me from focusing forever on the notes I don’t know. You’ve got to get to the point where you’re reading it just like a book, each note is a letter and you can’t just stall on one letter, and this app and the timer helps with that so I keep moving and am learning to read the words (the notes all together), instead of just recognizing the individual letters (1 note.) Absolutely love this app and it is worth the cost of the premium version by far.

  3. 5/5The best way to teach yourself piano notes

I’m currently teaching myself to play the piano. I have no musical past. I was convinced I could never read sheet music. I highly recoment the full version of this app. With the lessons and a bit of practice both on the app and with my intrument I’ve been blown away with the progress I’ve made. It’s only been about two weeks and I can easily decipher most of the notes on the trebble cleff!! Though it’s not going to teach you pacing (at least it hasnt for me at lesson 15) and you’ll need to study up a bit on that online if you’re in the “teaching yourself an instrument” boat like i am. The one and only “issue” (if you can call it even that) I’ve had is that there is no in-app way to apply the skills I’ve learned. I’d love to have a simple tune infront of me and, just like in practice mode, play it and it correct me if I get it wrong. So basically if it’s possible- an option to play a tune and apply what i’ve learned would be amazing! This app is 100% worth the money- it’s just unbelievable how affordable it is for how much you can get out of it!! I saw a lot of improvement in myself with practicing a bit every day! having an app like this makes it so easy to practice a bit on the bus ride home or whenever i find myself bored with social media. to add to that, an option to play music would make the app much much more fun! its almost like a game!

  4. 4/5Excellent concept.

Uses a format similar to angry birds and cut the rope in that it has multiple levels and each level reward you with a clearance of one two or three stars. You can go back and replay each level to try and better your score. It has difficulty levels ranging from very easy to very hard. It allows you to select trouble clef or bass clef or both. And many other features. My favorite feature is that it allows you to use the microphone on your device to play the notes on your piano or just about any other instrument that as well tuned. The accuracy when playing a live instrument through the microphone is pretty darn good. If you play too fast, it won’t recognize occasionally and makes an error, which kind of stinks because one aspect is that the challenge level is timed. So you are encouraged to go as fast as you can, but the app can only allow you to go so fast. Would be great if they could continue to fine-tune the accuracy for speed

  5. 3/5Almost great

The app looks nice and the progression of learning notes is good. If just trying to learn the notes themselves with no instrument, this app is alright. However for learning piano specifically, this app is just not great and there are better options out there: 1. The on-screen keyboard being just one octave is ridiculously bad for learning. For example, playing a B note that is just below a C note involves you hitting the key on the opposite end of the octave. This does practically nothing at helping you learn how to play the notes on a piano, in fact it might be detrimental, and you’d be better off using the “Buttons” option. It should be at least two octaves and/or adjust to the possible notes in the exercise. At least one other app does this, and yes it works on a small phone just fine. 2. The play-your-own-piano feature does not work very well, at least for me, no matter how I adjust the threshold. It often thinks I’m playing the wrong note when it is in fact the correct note, this happens maybe 5-15% or the time (a digital piano so it’s 100% in tune). And you have to play slowly, if you’re getting better and can play the notes faster, nope you can’t because it won’t register and you’ll be given a bunch of incorrect notes. And having to play completely unrealistically staccato so that it doesn’t think the note you just played is also your attempt at the next note...that is very outdated. The technology to prevent this is quite common and I would think readily available.
