  1. 5/5Hefty curve, incredible performance.

I previously found Nintype to be a pretty problematic recommendation. It had amazing features I couldn't live without (two-finger typing is the baseline and that's still more than any other keyboard offers me), but it was slow in mysterious ways and even less stable than it is now in others. This version, submitted to Apple one or two years ago, finally fixes that. Yes, it leaves you with a keyboard that crashes occasionally (requiring you to switch back and/or reload it using a system input field like notes or the spotlight search) and has an intimidating canyon of options hidden away for the power users. But that canyon of options is also its biggest strength, alongside endless custom color schemes (including gradients, basic background patterns, a large number of individually customizable color fields all using RGB inputs and a mess of flashy, optional effects like jiggling and input wind and rainbow colors), huge amounts of customization available for inputs and shortcuts on keys, vital and/or random utilities and cute bonuses, just an incredible amount. Assuming it's still $5, that's absolutely worth it. Put some time, effort and input into Nintype, and it will reward you like no other iOS keyboard can. ...I mean, unless you're into visual gif selection rather than saving and pasting the links from a shortcut, or some other specific function that another keyboard is dedicated to, I guess. And unless Apple screws everything up again. But hey, updating iOS when it isn't strictly needed or strongly community-tested is a bad idea anyway!

  2. 5/5Finally works without constant crashing!

This poor app and developer has had issues with this app. It’s kinda awesome in what it does, but it froze constantly, pushing ppl away from it - this wasn’t because the developer was a poor one, apple has issues that they couldn’t figure out with third party keyboards. I’m not going to lie - when you download this app, its honestly frustrating as hell because of the learning curve and making it learn how you type, but after a while it is much better and your speed will increase considerably. I bought this a long time ago, so I’m not sure of the current cost, but the one draw back I think I can think of is that you others using your phone with struggle hardcore with using it because it is such a specialized keyboard. Because of this, I still keep my ios keyboard installed so that if somebody else is typing for me they can. Now if apple would allow for the third party apps to use Siri when you truly need to speak your text, I’d love this even more than I already do. For the user that was having trouble typing when the dictionary didn’t have a word, you enable peck mode and then favorite it by force pressing on the word. When you do this, it adds it for the future and you’re good to go for the next time. Final thing is to make sure you back up your words semi regularly because you don’t accidentally to lose all your stuff - what I do is put my stuff in a note and save it in icloud.

  3. 5/5Long time user

Been using this since it first came out. It’s an off and on off again relationship honestly. Before I stopped using the keyboard because of the constant crashes and memory leaks associated with such an advanced keyboard. But it’s been well worth it. Texting and even doing essays with this style of keyboard is amazing and satisfying. It’s realist gratifying once you get the swing of things. Newest update has made Nintype more stable than ever with almost no crashes ever. I can’t even remember the last time the keyboard would crash at all. Now the only complaint and a very minute one at that, is that the little mini game that comes with nintype is almost unplayable. It’s very glitchy and holding the spacebar to charge the bump to the next word doesn’t really work correctly anymore. Ultimately though that’s really a dumb and minor issue to have, but it’s a good example of how great this keyboard truly is. If this is the only issue now then it just shows how awesome nintype has become. Texting, and writing notes on your phone especially in landscape mode is a breeze and it’s amazing truly how fast you can eventually type with this keyboard. Not to mention the haptic feedback and themes you can customize and apply just adds even more content to an already amazing keyboard. Seriously a good job. Can’t ever go back to a regular touch keyboard again.

  4. 5/5Really, I love this app.

I had previously hated this app because I was often unable to use it. It was due to a crashing bug and a graphics bug in which the keyboard would always lie halfway off the screen. None of that anymore. Jormy is a diligent developer-- if you want an innovative piece of software that's under active development and good leadership, you can count on Nintype to deliver it. Besides everything that I have so far said, this app gives you the flexibility and productivity that absolutely EVERYONE can benefit from. It's definitely true that the learning curve is huge-- but think of it as a small walk uphill for an infinitely spanning smooth ride downhill. It's worth it, and at $4.99, frankly, it's a steal.

  5. 3/5Why doesn't this work better?

UPDATED UPDATE: This developer proves that his feature-rich approach to inputting text is brilliant. But Nintype still fails to properly interpret many common words. (This technology, pioneered by IBM and eventually migrated to iOS in the long-discontinued Shapewriter, should have been perfected by now!) UPDATED REVIEW... Very pleased to see this remarkable keyboard finally updated! It now seems more accurate, perhaps even much more accurate! But I must refresh my memory to recall all of its many features! Thanks to the developer for returning to fix his creation. This is one of those apps that you are thrilled to discover, yet are constantly frustrated by it. Every keyboard should have at least a fraction of its clever features. But they don't. Unfortunately, Nintype is unable to fulfill its most basic requirement. After many trials, it seems unable to reliably interpret gesture text-entry, even after giving it time to train itself. A shame!

Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, Nintype is officially updated for iOS 9! Let’s dive right in to what’s new. • Brand new icon. Lookin’ snazzy. Thanks Jack Haal! • 3D/Force Touch support, finally! Now you can do thing like force touch keys brings up alternative ones. There’s also Force Typing and Force Autocomplete! These are only for the iPhone 6S/6S+, by the way • iOS 9.1 emojis. You were waiting vehemently for these, weren’t you? • A simple mode. Of course, some of you love Nintype’s endless settings and features, but if you just aren’t that type of person then just turn simple mode on. • Simpler settings and settings search. No more having to dig in Nintype’s settings for ten minutes trying to find that one feature you wanted to enable (or disable, possibly) • A comprehensive help menu, including a FAQ and an autospace tutorial amongst others. • Server mode. Now you can view Nintype-related things such as consoles, log viewers, import/export boxes, etc. right from your computer browser! You can also use a physical keyboard to type on iOS with this. • Tons of improvements and small fixes related to everything that you can imagine (and maybe some that you even can’t). Things improved include peck-typing, topbar, autospace, glyphs (thanks George!), algorithms, learning, bug fixes, and so on. Note: this is not an extensive list • Hopefully improved stability. There is a lot more that’s included in this update just waiting to be discovered, but wasn’t mentioned here due to lack of space. If you want to read the full changelog, you can see it on Nintype’s website (soon). Have fun! p.s development will continue well throughout the next year, especially with the iPad pro & pencil use cases

Activate this from options iPad pro pencil mode Peckmode shadows Improvement to bottom-right sub-board Bugfixes, little improvements and other things (roughly 20-30 days of work go in this update)

  • 1.96

Bugfix to the "words turning into symbols" bug. Apologies for that Memory usage improvements (attempted, at least)

  • 1.97

Last iOS9 version, before iOS10 version comes out. Since march, some work have been made in making nintype more user friendly. Revamped options menu, improved themes editor menu. Added some fancier eye candy options. Plenty of bugfixes. Limited Russian and Hebrew support. Nothing much has been done in terms of making the keyboard appear more. For some reason the phantom disappearances still happen, even in iOS10. It seems like it's caused by OpenGL. I'll see what I can do, but.. When iOS shows no keyboard whatsoever on an app, but at the same time on another app nintype shows, whose fault is that? Not mine, right? Please know that in iOS10, to fix popup issues you may have to flip open access on/off twice - which restarts the keyboard proxies in all apps (it seems)

  • 1.98

Emojify is now renamed as "Expandify", now accessible from topbar options (a lot more convenient to use, if I do say so myself) Fixed the algorithm to improve autocorrect when peck-typing -> If you press-hold the spacebar for 5 seconds, it will launch a "crasher" menu this is not meant for you, it's meant for them Apple engineers. This is for reproducing the iOS10 non-popup issues. -> To reproduce the non-popup: 1. open nintype in some app (APP_A, e.g notes) 2. open nintype in some other app (APP_B, e.g reminders) 3. in nintype in APP_A, press_hold spacebar, lightly, for 5 seconds. 4. in APP_A select "yes", which activates the crasher mode 5. select "trigger_crash" which makes nintype restart 6. switch to APP_B (go to home screen first), open nintype. 7. select "trigger_crash" again, which will make nintype restart do steps 4-7 repeatedly between APP_A and APP_B, and eventually nintype will stop showing up. It won't show up until you restart nintype by turning on/off open access from settings.app -> If you manage to replicate it please file a radar bug at bugreport.apple.com (or google "apple radar") and file a radar bug! This is the only way we can get Apple to fix the non-popup issue. Once you have done so, please send me the radar ID (mail me at [email protected] or tweet me at @jormy) -> I would really appreciate any help in filing the above bug report. I won't ask for too many more requests in the future, but please help with this one. It's pretty much the bug that affects nintype the most, and unfortunately nintype suffers more from this bug compared to other third party keyboards.
