  1. 5/5Nice when working

I like the app when it is working. I have had a situation happen twice where I came home and my receiver (R-N303) lost it's wireless network connection. The frustration came when all of the automatic methods (airplay, sharing ios password) of getting it back on the network. I finally gave up and entered the network SSID and password manually with the remote. This involves scrolling through long list of upper and lower case letters, numbers and punction characters with the up and down arrows on the remote. Painful, but that is the only thing that will work when this happens. WhenI first got the device, it joined my network as an airplay speaker through my phone no problem. But both times that it forgot the network information, I had to enter the network information manually.

  2. 2/5Poor ROI; unreliable

The Yamaha receiver is an excellent product, but their MusicCast speakers and technical support is dismal at best. The major problem I’ve encountered is audio stuttering on WiFi connections. It took a while for me to isolate the issue but I managed to solve it (with no help from Yamaha.). I live in a large condo with neighbors on all sides that have their own routers which makes the 2.4ghz channel particularly crowded. I discovered that when someone particularly close is using the same Wifi channel as me, it causes the skipping and stuttering. The app includes a diagnostics report; at the bottom it includes nearby SSIDs and the channel they are using. My neighbors are using automatic channel assignment because the channels change periodically, so I need to change mine manually to resolve the issue. YMMV but that may help some of you. As far as lip sync goes with TV, you shouldn’t expect perfection. It just can’t be obtained. I use my speakers to listen to TV and music around the house so lip sync isn’t important to me, but if it was I’d use hard wired connections. I love my large and small MusicCast speakers, but would not buy them again unless the sync issue was resolved. Using patch cables directly to the router made no difference with sync so I believe the technology just isn’t there yet. As for Alexa functionality—if you can remember the commands “Ask MusicCast to...” and room or device names you selected, it has about a 50% chance of honoring your command.

  3. 2/5Unreliable

You spend a lot of money on a new receiver to be annoyed with your music playing experience. This app disconnects from my device often. Right now it cannot even reconnect so I can do air play from music apps but I have no control over the receiver to play music through different channels which is FRUSTRATING because only one room has music. Can’t control volume accurately. Each time I try to change the volume there is a several second delay which causes the sound to abruptly change because you think it is not working and instead crank the volume up or bring it down to much. When it connects to my device there is a several second delay, so I make sure to start the connection first and then the music. Often when I turn the receiver off from the app it only stops the music in one room and continues playing in the other room. Yamaha, please get your act together. This is a very bad costumer experience give the fact that in 2026 we listen to music from our phones! This should be a seamless experience for the money we payed to have a “modern” receiver!

  4. 5/5Unreliable App (now I know why apple is thriving)

Bought this TSR700 at Costco. No problems for a good while but then it’s all about the app and receiver connection. I really want to make this work as my living room TV and surround system is connected to the receiver. TV has zero issues but once you try to connect your phone to the app the nightmare starts. I have two zones, one to the living room and one to the kids room, both with ceiling and wall speakers. Sometimes the connection gets lost and there is NO WAY to even get app to connect to the receiver. When I said there is NO WAY I mean there is NO WAY. Every time I try to open the app its a 50/50 chance that it works or ir doesn’t work. I’m persistent to find an alternate solution while it starts working again. Frustrating!!!!

  5. 5/5Great concept but. . .

I like the idea of this app. Wish it worked like it is supposed to. I’ve had a lot of trouble getting consistent results. Originally had my TV connected is optical cable. Couldn’t get the app to hold its settings and see my sound bar and satellite speakers. Finally changed to the HDMI ARC port on the TV and it seems to be working better. When I now turn on the TV it automatically recognizes it and turns on MusicCast. There is still a big delay from sound bar to satellite speakers I think due to the fact that the sound bar is hard wired as the speakers are Bluetooth. To solve it I just turn the speakers way down and get a mild echo sound. Like it’s a huge hall. Needs to have better instructions. A pain to figure out and set up.
