1. 4/5Necessary for cinephiles

   Movie pass is a great service that allows cinephiles to access the cinema without absolutely destroying their bank account. The app itself is a bit clunky and there is no way to access anything meaningful on a website, so there is certainly some things I would like to see improved on the delivery of the service/software end of things. Yet, despite this, it is certainly functional enough to warrant its use. If you’re looking for a reason to motivate yourself to attend more movies in the cinema, this is a great motivator. I was fearful that they would introduce more blackout times or dramatically increase the cost of certain films but for the most part, these things have not occurred. I have also never had any issues with actually using the card.

2. 1/5Used to be decent

   A couple of years ago the service was actually a good deal. They have absolutely killed it. You used to be able to see 3-4 movies per month now you can see 1 movie per month. That’s it. What’s the point of a service that allows you to see one movie for the price of one movie?? Might as well just pay for tickets as you need them. I guess technically once every 2-3 years you would have accumulated enough residual credits for you to see an additional movie in a month. Their customer service is horrible if you need help with anything other than making a reservation. They claim to support theaters that have premium pricing and then deny the transaction because “it seems it’s not a standard ticket” when that is the standard price at the theater THEY CLAIM TO SUPPORT. Nothing is worse then when they removed eticket support from basically every theater, which is where the value and convenience came from, and then blamed the theaters for updating their payment processing. You’re telling me almost every single nonaffiliated theater changed their payment system on the exact same day? Seems more like the company doesn’t wanna take the blame for killing the value of the service and then gas light about it. The app works alright most of the time but there is pretty consistent issues.

3. 1/5Terrible app, predatory practices

   I foolishly signed up during a discounted trial period. Towards the end I went to the app to cancel only to see no cancel button and a message saying my subscription is ending next month. Great! I thought, there’s nothing to be done. Then a few months later I notice they’ve still been charging me monthly. My fault for not checking my billing statements closely. I try to log back into my account to check my subscription but I can’t even do it because the app keeps crashing (already have the latest version). I ask for a refund, they say they only refund the most recent month but that I can escalate to the billing department. Or they can give me some credits. I ask them to escalate and they say they can only refund the recent month. I say then fine give me the credits. They say we already gave you that partial refund so credits aren’t an option anymore. Genuinely the most predatory company I’ve interacted with and that’s saying a lot.. would honestly rather pay triple for movie tickets for the rest of my life than interact with them again. Lesson learned to never sign up with my actual credit card!

4. 1/5No movies under 34 credits

   When I first got this in January it was so easy to buy a ticket. Now every single movie only has the “card” option which means you have to copy and paste the credit card number and go buy it yourself. The online processing fee makes it so I can’t even see one movie with my alotted credits, as every one is 36 credits. I end up having to buy new credits every month and it’s a hassle and not the bargain that was advertised. Update: the team reached out and said they’re working on this. Love to hear it. I also want to add that on Tuesdays a lot of theaters do half price tickets, but moviepass credits do not reflect the same discount. It’s cheaper for me to pay the theater $6 directly instead of wasting 34 credits on the same movie. Terrible. Update: I just showed up to see a movie listed on the app at a theater on the app. I couldn’t buy my ticket. Went inside to see if they could help and they said they don’t accept moviepass. So why is it on the app?? I drove 20 minutes to this specific theater to use my credits and ended up paying with cash because I didn’t have time to go to a different theater.

5. 1/5Not worth it whatsoever

   So I got movie pass thinking it would save me money since I see movies almost every week. If anything I have spent MORE money trying to use movie pass than if I just bought the tickets outright. So let me get this right, $10 gets you 26 credits right? Ok $10 for 1 ticket is the same price as at the actual theater but I guess that's fine. Then a movie will be listed as 26 credits but then when you check out and try to use those credits you just spent $10 on, suddenly after tax this MATINEE ticket is suddenly 33 points. So you have to spend another $5 for 13 credits in order to pay for this ticket that would've been $11 at the door on a Friday. So by the time you're able to use your points you're now spending $15. That's not even mentioning the CONSTANT issues I have with the app. Half the time the movie isn't even listed, so I have to use the "missing movie" option which is more points so that means more money. There is literally no benefit to this app and it actually will make you lose money. Genuinely the worst "business" model I've ever encountered.
