  1. 3/5Strong idea, mediocre execution

This seemed like exactly what I’ve been looking for. It’s not quite there. It’s missing some critical features: - Ability to create an item in multiple keys. If I want to create a practice item for each bebop scale (12 of them), I have to do a terrible copy-paste workflow. - Ability to practice in some keys for the day. I want to work on major pentatonic scale soloing in 3 keys on any given day, and the key combinations will change. I can’t do that with this app without manually creating a bunch of lists. The problem is that I have to then do the same thing for each different thing I want to practice in multiple keys: I need many lists for pentatonic scales, many for bebop scales, many for minor scales. I want to be able to pick keys to work on today. - Ability to smartly combine items. Sometimes I want to work on an A section, then a B section, then both together. I can make separate Practice Items for each but it seems a little strange and messes up the tracking. The app is also extremely ugly. And what’s with the pictures next to practice items and lists? Screen space is precious and it’s wasted with random images that have nothing to do with what I’m practicing. I would much rather have a utilitarian design that maximizes useful information on the screen. I don’t think the creators of this app are musicians. If they are, I don’t think they use this app seriously.

  2. 4/5Essential Tool in Daily Use

Modacity is always open on my phone when I’m practicing. (Honestly it’s not always daily, but I thought that made a better title for the review.) My longest practice streak is 111 days, and I know that because I tracked it in Modacity. For me this “gamification” of practicing is a powerful motivator. The ability to track what items I have practiced is also meaningful to me. And I have several “lists”—groups of individual practice items with timings—so I can pick something I feel is meaningful when I know I have a limited amount of time to work. I’d give the app five stars but for some small user interface details that I would do differently. And about that I’m happy to say that the app’s developers and product managers have responded to my suggestions, implementing some of the changes I suggested. I’m really happy to have this app as an aid for continuous improvement of my musicianship.

  3. 2/5Enough with the prompts and timers!

All I’m trying to do is set up my first practice routine and I keep getting bombarded by pop-ups to rate the app and the practice timer keeps starting. First, if you want a fair rating, don’t try to make me rate the app within the first minute of using it. I assure you, the rating will be poor. If I could just choose not to rate it and be reminded the next time I opened the app, that would be reasonable; but the rating prompt comes up every time I open an item or edit something. So fine, have it your way—2 stars for being incredibly annoying. Also, enough with the auto-start timers. At least one of them seems pausible by tapping on it, but the one that sits in the bottom left starts as soon as I open the ‘page’ and doesn’t stop unless I tap Finish. What did I just finish? I hadn’t even started anything yet. I’ll be a practicing fiend before I even pick up my instrument at this rate. I can’t really comment yet on other features—awesome or awful—since I want to hurry and rate this app just to get rid of the stupid prompt.

  4. 5/5Incredibly helpful

I’ve only been using Modacity for a week and I can already see some great effects. I know some people wouldn’t need this app, but so many of us are stressed-out, which usually makes us either disorganized in our practice or inclined to just repeat the same old exercises without enough intentionality. Probably most users are young student or professionals, but I’m an older serious amateur and getting some help to make the very best of my limited practice time is just fantastic. Hell my string quartet already saw a difference! A lot of good thinking is going into this app. Modacity gathers a whole bunch of essential tools under the hood - Playlists where you can choose how much time to spend on each item. Places for notes on each piece or passage or technique exercise you have designated. On board metronome and even better, the metrodrone, which is especially fantastic for playing high on violin. The app encourages you to record yourself at various stages, and you can choose which recordings to save so it doesn’t hog memory. I haven’t used the recorder much yet but I think it will be great. I also really appreciate the blog posts which bring cognitive science to bear on practice design. The one about spaced repetition was pure gold. As someone who has been playing for, gulp, 40 years, a lot of this feels intuitively familiar and right, but it’s so helpful to have it laid out clearly and designed into the application. One last thing is that Marc is very serious about the offer to help individuals with practice questions. He not only gave me some good feedback himself but passed my question on to a pro violinist. I don’t know how long this extraordinary level of support would be sustainable but take advantage of it while the app is growing, I say. It’s built by musicians for musicians, and they show a serious commitment to quality. It’s not super cheap but I have never been so sure that an app is worth it!

  5. 5/5Excellent for Systematic Practice

This app is completely customizeable and helps you practice smart to avoid wasting time and reinforcing bad technique or wrong notes or rhythms. You can create a database of repertoire and systematically review it to keep it all fresh and in your fingers. You can shake your device to randomize repertoire review. You can write notes that go with each piece. You can record yourself to track progress and those recording are stored with that piece or technique. You can hear how each technique has improved or deteriorated with time. You can schedule technique practice to make sure you keep up with technique details that you need to learn, improve or keep fresh. I’m planning to show the data and recording to my teacher to ask her to critique my practice strategies. When I bring this app to the lesson she will be able to see an exact history of how I practiced each technique, listen to brief recordings of my practice technique and help me to troubleshoot my practicing to help me improve even faster. One final item on my wishlist for this app would be to video record myself as well. As an early intermediate violin student, I like to monitor my posture and body mechanics. I currently use my camera app, but it would be really nice to be able to make and store very brief videos and make notes about things to improve. Even better, a candid camera option that would take random occasional video of me practicing for thoroughly candid review of positioning.
