  1. 5/5The Twitter killer!

If you have a Twitter account, you might as well tell your followers you’re moving onto Mastodon. This app is simply amazing, it has an almost “Discord”-esque vibe to how communities are structured and ran. Whilst still following the same overall “platform” guidelines. As an LGBTQ+ person, I’m so happy to have frontline representation within the app by having an entire “LGBT” server search section within the app. This level of inclusion, for MY community is something that even Discord doesn’t have, and I want to thank everyone at Mastodon for including this into the app! Seriously, it means a lot to have one more app (in an honestly small pool of apps) that says “Hey! We accept and support your community. Period, dot”. All-in-all, I very much love the community inclusion. I also very much like the, well defined UI/UX, and its nice features such as using emoji like, Blobcat. Alongside super fast performance and rock hard stability, Mastodon is a good reason to finally abandon Twitter, and the toxicity, and lack of support or care from management. 10/10 app.

  2. 5/5I love this app.

I love this Mastodon for iOS app. It is accessible, very functional with voiceover. However, my main concern, is notifications. Voice the iOS screen, reader, is not announcing those like it’s supposed to whenever someone has posted/tooted some messages with links, whenever I follow somebody, or when the notifications are such anyone, or followers, voiceover is not announcing, even if I’m not within the app or not using it if I’m on a different app. Please explain to me why, this isn’t working for iOS correctly like it’s supposed to? It would be great if that can be fixed, and corrected. If somebody could fix it, that would be great. It would work great for everybody. Also, it would be beneficial to use the default system sounds, so that whenever someone has posted something, I can get a notification/banner and announcement right away when somebody has posted pieces of information on their timeline. so my question for you is, is this possible if that could be fixed? In the next few updates, for iOS 17 going forward? That would be awesome if that would happen, please and thank you.

  3. 4/5Some things that could make the app great for VoiceOver

I’ve used Mastodon since early 2023, and while I broadly enjoy the freedom to see who I want in my timeline without ads, recommended content, and other algorithmic garbage, I feel the official Mastodon app could be better-optimized for VoiceOver. As a VoiceOver user, I do not need to hear other users’ URLs immediately after hearing their display names, as I find that’s more superfluous information I have to listen to before hearing the content of a post. Therefore, there should be an option in the app’s settings that determines how users are identified in the Home timeline, which could help reduce excess verbosity. Also, there does not seem to be any way I’ve found to clear notifications from within the app. On the web, I can reveal my notifications, click the “Show settings” button, followed by the “clear notifications” button to clear notifications from the web view, however they are still displayed in the app with no way to clear them. Similar to other apps which show notifications, there should be a “Clear” option in the actions rotor for notifications in the official Mastodon app, or alternatively, an option that’s revealed when triple-tapping the notification to access a context menu. Also, when clearing notifications from the web, they should also be automatically cleared from any apps signed into that account.

  4. 5/5Amazing improvements

When I first got the app, I liked the aesthetics but there was quite a bit missing. I couldn't see those I'm following or my followers. I couldn't use multiple accounts without a hassle. I didn't understand how to write direct messages (this was a misunderstanding on my part) and I couldn't view the federated timeline. Fortunately in 1.2.0, it's now possible to see followers and those you're following. Possibly more importantly, multi account support is now stellar. Using multiple accounts is vital on decentralized platforms and protocols such as ActivityPub, and this gets it right. Maybe the federated timeline will come later, or maybe it'd be difficult to justify given Apple's strict rules, but it's chaotic and spammy enough that I don't mind logging in on a browser for the few times I need it. I love how quickly this project is taking shape. Its UI is simple yet does exactly what I want it to do. And that wouldn't be possible if it weren't a free and open source project!! Props to MainasuK and Gargron :)

  5. 5/5Better Twitter than Twitter (and Musk-free!)

Like over 100,000 other former Twitter users, I joined Mastodon in April 2022 because I didn’t want to be on a social media platform owned and governed by the whims of an unkind billionaire. I did expect it to be sloppy and barren, but my expectations were laid to waste. Mastodon is crafted thoughtfully, with an eye toward building communities of people with similar interests run by people that you’re likely to know. And all of these little communities are connected to one another. Discovering people to follow takes a little more effort, but YOU are in control! YOU get to decide what server to join (or start your own) and each server can have its own rules, decide what other servers it will connect with, etc. freedom of speech is there, but so is a culture of kindness. I’m here to stay! Other Twitter refugees should come here. But remember you’re not sliding into some corporate wasteland site; you’re joining an individual person’s intentional community, so be a good neighbor!

Just in time for Giving Tuesday, you may now see a banner at the bottom of your timeline inviting your support for Mastodon’s continued development (only when logged in to [mastodon.social](http://mastodon.social) or mastodon.online). You’ll also see a bunch of improvements, small and large: Filters work better! - Concealed posts no longer take up the full space of their content, which should make scrolling past them less arduous. - Filtered posts now tell you which filter they triggered! - Filters with the “hide” action should now actually remove posts from your feed completely, as intended. - Content warnings have also been updated slightly — as on the web, if the content warning text is empty, only the attached image will be hidden. Your privacy is better guarded… - When you log out of an account, logging in again will now require re-entering the username and password. - Deleting the app from your device and reinstalling will now launch as if you had never logged in. The new user experience is a little better… - The “Find people to follow” view is now dismissable even after you’ve viewed a profile. - When you follow someone from the “Find people to follow” view, your blank feed will update immediately… and hopefully show you some cool stuff! Some small visual improvements… - Vertical-stacked layout of edit history labels, which fixes some spectacularly bad layouts when the localized strings are lengthy. - Dark Mode icon now has a dark ‘m’. And finally… - Fewer crashes! File this under the customarily bland description “stability improvements” because although the refactoring projects involved have all the drama of sword dancing with freshly honed blades for the developer involved, you will hopefully notice nothing.

  • 2024.12

To see out 2024, a smorgasbord of bug fixes and improvements that we hope bring you some joy! Posting is more reliable: - Compose window now stays open while the post is published, so you can address any errors that pop up - A bunch of errors that can happen during publishing are now reported to you instead of being ignored - Less likely for the app to freeze up while you’re typing a post Posts look better: - Link previews no longer show large blank spaces for images that never arrive - Compact link previews (for square/portrait or no images) show all the expected information - GIFs in content-warned or filtered posts are (once again) blurred out - Images and avatars should only ever show up with the posts they belong to Timeline works better: - Filters set to hide really do hide now (yes, we said that about the last version, too… but it really is fixed now, right?) - Tap on the author name opens their profile instead of the thread view (by @gokulvenkat243) - Larger tap areas for the action menu and content show/hide button

  • 2024.4

Hello! Hello and welcome to another version of hand-written release notes for Mastodon for iOS. This time it's the 2024.4-release and we're working hard to keep up the schedule: One release per month! Just kiddin. Truth to be told: We're basically a bunch of lazy people but from time to time we think: Well, we should ship another release. And then we work really, REALLY hard to make the Mastodon-app better. And this is why the 2024.4-version contains this: - We (hopefully!) improved the polls! Voting and poll creation should be much smoother and way more stable now. Give it a try and ask those nice and helpful people on Mastodon what to have for dinner tonight! (IOS-181) - New month, new me! We updated the designs of the Home-screen, you can switch between your local community-timeline and the people you're following. We also updated the little indicator (we call it: Pill) that shows if there are new posts or if that toot was sent. Let us know how you like those changes! (IOS-234, IOS-235) - We also updated how we present the timestamp and other meta-information of a post (IOS-232) - Under the Explore-tab, we improved the interface which lets you choose between the most popular posts and other things to explore (IOS-237) - Remember that we added Domain-blocking a few releases ago? Turns out: You could block the community you're part of. This wasn't intended at all and we just missed that, sorry and thanks for reporting! (GH-1269) - We added a new visibility option to post. It's called either "Unlisted" or "Quiet public" and modernized the icons for those different options. (GH-1271) - Temporarily we turned off haptic feedback. But same as with the community timeline or a famous killing machine: I(t) will be back! (IOS-247) - Last, but not least we tweaked how the number of people is presented. (GH-1266) You see: Lots of new bits and pieces to improve the Mastodon-experience step by step. And we will keep making it better. Thank you so much for supporting us and using Mastodon and enjoy the rest of this day and week and month and year and so on!

  • 2024.5

Hey there! Welcome to the 2024.5 release of Mastodon for iOS. It's been a while but we worked on lots of bug fixes and (minor) improvements since the last version. 2024.5 comes with this: - We fixed some issues with the new, fancy "New Posts"-pill. For example, it disappears now if you scroll to top (like it is supposed to) (GH-1278) - Remember the screen to login when you have an existing account? We made the server selection more elegant (IOS-226) - Also related to Onboarding: We slightly updated the Privacy-screen and improved Keyboard-handling. (IOS-221) - You can finally change your profile picture again from the app. We introduced a bug in one of the last versions, but got it fixed with 2024.5. Sorry for any inconveniences. Now go and update your profile picture! (GH-1276) - Don't want to miss any content, but missed the "Load More"-button between posts? Great news: We found and fixed a bug so that it's finally there again, so you don't miss any of the great content any longer! (IOS-266) - We improved the stability of the app by reducing the crashes. Promise! (IOS-257, IOS-254) - If there's a loooooong toot with a Content Warning, we limited the height of that Content Warning. (IOS-278) - We fixed a bug related to polls: Your own choice is visible now (GH-1278) - The avatar-image in the bottom bar doesn't flicker anymore when switching tabs (IOS-238) - The menus for both profiles and toots got an update (IOS-231, IOS-229) - We removed some clutter on the Mentions-screen (IOS-270) - Once it'll be available on your instance, you'll see moderation warnings on the Notification-screen if you someone complained about you (IOS-264) That's it! We hope, you enjoy those bug fixes and notice the new features. Thank you so much for supporting us and using Mastodon!

  • 2024.6

Hello there! We hope you enjoy the summer with a cold drink (if you live in the northern hemisphere) or the winter with a warm drink (if you live in the southern hemisphere). Regardless of where you live, you not only deserve peace and happiness, but also the 2024.6-release of Mastodon for iOS. And that comes with this: - A new Privacy & Safety-section in the Settings-part of the app. Here you can configure the default visibility for new posts, for example. (IOS-168) - A bug fix for our Number One-crash! When tapping in your own profile too quickly, this resulted in a crash. But don't worry: We got this! (IOS-255, GH-1257) - Speaking of bug fixes: When you tried to change your profile fields, some content got erased. We are really for if this happened to you. (GH-1290) - A little cleanup, that won't affect you: We removed old persistence code for cards and polls (IOS-178, IOS-182) - We improved "Load more"-behaviour in several parts throughtout the entire app. Loading new content should be waaaaaaayyyyyy faster now, nearly at the speed of light! (IOS-272) - When you update your profile-image, you will see that change now in the Tab-bar (IOS-277) - We fixed a bug that showed the "Load more"-button in your Home-timeline when there was no new content (GH-1288) We hope that these fixes and improvements make your Mastodon-life a little easier. This release wouldn't have been possible without your ongoing support. Thank you so much for that and for using Mastodon and making the Web (and the world) a better place.

  • 2024.7

Long time no see! Okay, joke's on us as it has been just a week or so since the last release. But we've been busy and this is why you can enjoy these rather short release notes for the latest and greatest 2024.7-release of Mastodon for iOS. It contains not one, but two improvements and bug fixes: 1. We fixed a bug! In case you wanted to translate a reblogged status, this failed, but not anymore, as we fixed this! (IOS-271) 2. An improvement! If the author of a blogpost or a newspaper article or a video producer or any other content creator on the internet has a Mastodon-account (and did some configuration), you will see a small, additional button if someone posts a link to their written piece or video or content in general. This button leads you to the author's profile so that you can discover more of their content. We hope that these numerous changes help you discover more content you like, but: No pressure! Use Mastodon only as much as it feels good to you. We don't want to lurk you in as we all know: There are way more important things in life than social media. As always: This release wouldn't have been possible without your ongoing support. Thank you so much for that and for using Mastodon. It sparks so much joy to see people using the stuff you built. Until next time!

  • 2024.8

Hey there! We’ve got some nifty updates for you in this release. Now you can check out your lists right in the app, because who doesn’t love a good list? If your server is feeling generous, you’ll enjoy our new notification filters. Filter away! We’ve sorted out the character counter on the compose screen, so you can add links without any counting mishaps. Crash fixes galore! The app is now more stable than your morning coffee routine. Widgets can finally retrieve data, and shortcuts are back to posting like champs. Thanks for sticking with us and for all your feedback. We hope these tweaks make your app experience even better! Enjoy the update!

  • 2024.9

We’ve fixed bugs and improved stability with this release.

  • 2025.01

Going viral just got a lot less painful! This version lists your notifications in streamlined groups instead of one at a time, meaning you can spend less time scrolling and more time being part of the conversation. - Favorites, boosts, and follows that occur close together will be grouped with similar notifications. (Resolves #399) - Follow requests can be approved or rejected when they appear. (Resolves #1342) You’ll also see a bunch of improvements around post visibility (”Public”, “Unlisted”, etc.) throughout the app: - Visibility setting for each post has been moved to the top of the compose window, just under the publish button, making it much more obvious. - Posts that are not public show the visibility icon next to the timestamp. - Private mentions and replies display headers as appropriate. - Several other long-standing issues in this area have been resolved (#242, #472, #1395). Plus quite a few other small fixes! New Contributors - @tvrrp made their first contribution in https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon-ios/pull/1392 - @vtourraine made their first contribution in https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon-ios/pull/1400 - @angristan made their first contribution in https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon-ios/pull/1414 Full Changelog: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon-ios/compare/2024.12...2025.01

Additional improvements: - Boosts and favorites on already-boosted posts should “stick” properly. - The Voice Over experience in the Followers and Following lists is significantly better.

A few small improvements while we work on larger changes behind the scenes… - iPad layout is better - User’s default visibility choice is now respected for boosts as well as posts - Server rule display now shows both the headline text and the additional explanations (if any), and will show rules in the user’s current preferred language setting, if translations are available.

  • 2025.08

This version brings several improvements to the main timeline: - The post “…” menu now offers both the existing “Copy Link” option and a new “Copy” option, which will copy the text of the post now that selecting text directly from the screen is not possible. - There is a new dedicated audio player and improvements have been made to the video player. - Loading from the top and bottom should work more smoothly, and the bottom loader now has some visual feedback as you scroll to trigger it. We’ve also made big changes to the way we handle localizations, which will make the app much more flexible going forward. This may mean you see a few additional untranslated strings until our volunteer translators can catch up. Several places in the app that display lists of other accounts have been updated to match our new layout and provide more useful information.

  • 2025.09

Mastodon, now in Liquid Glass! We’ve also fixed a few crashes, turned on localization for some additional languages (including Estonian), and improved the iPad layout so that the margins are scrollable.
