   I’m going to start this off by saying that I don’t think I’ve ever reviewed an app before, but I really felt compelled to. I have been a wannabe language learner since I was born but never really put in the effort on the personal side outside of classes. I downloaded this app around 8 years ago for the first time through my local library and then deleted after a couple days because I felt it too slow, and didn’t like that it wasn’t gamified. Continue that cycle for years with a couple hundred apps for several different languages. I just recently found out that I have access to Mango again after moving from my hometown through my alma mater and, since I now have a physical job that allows me to have headphones in, I decided that instead of just listening to music like I used to, I would take advantage of this time to learn a language. I’ve been using the playback/podcast option so I can learn French while I’m at work—hands free! I will admit, I probably sound hilarious if anyone happens to walk by, but this has by far been the best tool someone like me (someone who likes to be doing something with her hands while listening to something) could have ever come across. When I finish a big section I get to review with cards during a break, and I start my day with review, and so far I have yet to forget the grammar points and vocab I have learned. After so long and trial and error, I needed the right situation and the right tool to reinvigorate my passion for languages, and this was just the thing. I recommend this for the person who has devoted time each day they can work on languages, but not for someone who prefers gamification. To each their own, but this works perfectly for me!

2. 4/5Just one bug to fix!

   I remember hearing about Mango Languages 20 years ago and how it was potentially free if you did it at the library. I always wanted to try it, and now that we live in an age of smartphones where we can connect our apps to our library cards, this really is a great gift. I am one of those who completely lost faith in Duolingo once I realized that its business model relied on drip feeding people the feeling of education for as long as possible to keep getting their money rather than actually educating them. I am thrilled that this app exists, and I am thrilled that the institution of the library still exists in these dark times for public infrastructure so I need to give all of that prepuce before I register my one complaint: I have just started a French course and want to take advantage of the autoplay feature while I get ready in the morning, drive my car, etc. but unpredictably it will jump at seemingly random points in seemingly random exercises, skipping to the next. I don't want to miss any content because it was surely laid out with the repetitions by design. But I also don't want to have to sit beside it like a babysitter to advance slide after slide when there are so many opportunities throughout the day to let it just play to me. This one but being ironed out would make the app perfect for me.

   I’ve been using the Mango app to help me learn Spanish. What I really like is the ability to have the pronunciation of phrases repeated. If I want to hear something again, it is very easy to do so. The app includes a lot of repetition, which can be very good in learning new vocabulary and grammar. There seems to be just the right amount of grammatical exclamation, and the explanations are clear and concise. I would suggest two improvements. First, I wish the pages included text indicators of whether one is speaking formally or informally, using the plural or singular, or using a particular adjective to describe a masculine or feminine object if it is not clear from the English translation. One can turn on a narrator’s voice, which does include that information, but it means taking more time to get through each item, for the narrator includes an introductory phrase for each page even if no such information is needed. (Example: “Now how would you say...”) Second, it would be useful if the app could have more variation and recombinations in the examples. The exact same example appears over and over. It would be useful to have variations using other vocabulary one has already learned. I do understand, however, that this would add to the production cost of the app and perhaps require more larger file sizes, for more native-speaker recordings would have to be created and stored. Overall, though, it’s a very useful app for learning languages!

   This is the first language learning app for Arabic that I’ve come across that teaches colloquial Arabic as well as MSA. Major props for that, I want to be able to speak to people! Not only that but you get started learning the Arabic by constructing sentences so you can start conversing right away. It’s much more effective than random vocabulary you MIGHT use. While you’re learning it makes you think about how the sentence needs to be constructed and you build your vocabulary in a natural way! I love being able to record myself speaking the language against the recorded language. It’s like being with a private tutor, but you get to skip around and learn what you want to instead of what a tutor thinks you should learn. It’s been very helpful for keeping me engaged. They include the short vowels in the writing as well so you’re not clueless as to how they say specific words in dialect. (WARNING: This app doesn’t teach you how to read Arabic. Learn that quick before you jump on here, it will take at most a week for you to learn the alphabet. I have learned though how to pronounce what I’m reading in a more natural way!) This app is well worth the money! Save your dollars on other books and apps and get this app if you love learning languages! You aren’t limited to one language either! Good luck!

5. 5/5Great tool for language learning

   I put a lot of time into learning a new language so I don’t use just one tool/app/method. Some people complain about one tool being terrible or imperfect or such, but the problem is usually that you have to put more work into it than what any single app or book can give you. Mango is awesome as one of my main tools for learning. I use it for Spanish, French, and Russian primarily right now. I would like to try Mandarin and Arabic but I found them more difficult to pick up with this app. It doesn’t teach you the alphabet and an important first step in learning a new language is figuring out the alphabet. That’s why I spent time first studying the Russian alphabet and why I’m still studying the Arabic alphabet. I don’t think any app will be easy to truly pick up those languages without preparatory study. But I think if you know some basics going in for the more difficult languages, you’ll realize it’s a great tool. I breeze through the Spanish lessons because I already have some foundation and it’s closer related to English than Russian which takes me a lot longer, which is expected. I really like the format of the lessons, the culture notes, and the daily flash cards it prepares for you to review. Over time as you go through them and answer yes/no for whether you got it right, it figures out which ones you have trouble with and which ones you are starting to memorize. Overall I definitely like it way more than Duolingo, especially because Mango uses native (or at least very native sounding) speakers. Though I still use Duolingo mainly only for Arabic now, they sound like glorified robot voices.
