  1. 5/5Excellent app, have improvement suggestion!

Recently, I emailed application support the following, which summarizes my like for the app and my suggestion for improvement: Hello. For a long time now, I’ve been a big fan of your LookUp iOS app, which I most often use as a dictionary. I love the beautiful imagery in your app, as all the beautiful pictures in the app make your app more a pleasure to use as a dictionary, instead of just using a plain dictionary containing only words! 👍 May I make a suggestion that I think would improve the usability of your app, not just for myself but for others as well? Include links in the definitions to similar words. Let me explain: Today I looked up the word “admonition” in your app, and the noun meaning says “an act or action of admonishing”. Since I was not certain of what the word “admonish” means, I had to go back to the search bar in the app to search on the word “admonish”, to find its definition. Had there been a link to the word “admonish” in the definition section of the word “admonition”, I could have more easily tapped on such a link and been brought directly to the dictionary definition of the word “admonish”. I certainly hope this email finds you all well. Have a wonderful weekend!! Update: I received a nice response back from the developer, indicating that these links in the app I suggested are being worked on, which is great news! 👍

  2. 5/5Clever, unique, elegant vocab builder

I love this app! I love words and dictionaries. I own lots of dictionary apps. I teach English to non-English speakers, ESL. Contrary to another reviewer or two, I find this to be a unique, browsable, and helpful vocabulary builder. It's NOT a simple dictionary, a reference, that's not the best purpose - it's something to sit and spend time with. I wouldn't recommend it solely to use as a dictionary for quick look ups. I don't need such interesting distraction, I would stay in the app, get lost in words, and not get back to my work. Also contrary to another reviewer, they are NOT words common to daily ordinary American English speakers. You may have at least heard many words, studied them for testing, and even gleaned the meanings from context. There will be words you've heard many times and may even use but you never looked them up yourself, those words you can use and describe with examples but cannot cite a definition. So it's very interesting. You get visual imagery, etymology, grammar and related words. And links to more comprehensive definitions, a wiki. The presentation of each word is colorful and appealing without cartoonish sensibilities. By simply visually browsing you can learn, hone, or refresh your vocabulary without the tedium of drilling, memorizing, or winding thru long repetitious dictionary definitions.

  3. 5/5Best in class!!

Are use this app on my iPhone on my Apple Watch, and on my MacBook. After and recent minor issue where my collections were lost during an app update, I am now very confident that the developer has integrity and will seek quickly to correct any issues. This has given me confidence in continuing to use this excellent app. I love to use this app. Whenever I discover a word that I would like to add to one of my collections it is easy to get the definition and add it right away to either one or multiple collections. I love that on the MacBook version of the app I can export a PDF file of any one of my collections along with definitions. That allows me to export my own back up of my collections on a periodic basis and allows me to easily share my collection of words with someone else. My wife and I are able to each use the app because the app allows for family sharing. I greatly appreciate that and it adds more value to the subscription.

  4. 3/5Astonishing - But Needs Improving

Being a total geek who reads old dictionaries for fun, I raced to download this app after reading just a few reviews. I should have read further. If you want a complete dictionary of the English language providing full definitions as well a concise etymolgy of every word, pass on this one. In fact, what good is a dictionary, if any word is missing one or two meanings? Also, the sources of the definitions are not always given and are inconcistent when listed, which is a red flag in my book. Another nuisance I found was the abysmal approach to the etymology of some words, an example might be this for the word amoral: “a - moral” ! Additionally, the app repeatedly crashed when I tried to move from one word of the day to the next. One function I was surprised to find missing was the ability to set Lookup as the default dictionary for my iPad, but unless there are serious improvements made, I would not use it as such. What astonished me was the ‘look around’ feature. Skeptical, I focused my iPad’s camera on my bedside lamp, not wanting to give it too hard an image to identify correctly and it went one step further (as I had included mostly the top of the lamp) in calling it a lampshade. Impressed, I decided to increase the challenge and turned to my dog, but it did not give me the definition for the word dog. Instead, it gave her correct pedigree: Pug! Anyone learning English can try using this app as an electronic dooden! All in all, the app only cost me $2.99 and hopefully the developers will add further improvements making it a great dictionary.

  5. 5/5I love this app and the Siri Shortcuts that it works with

But, I just would love if it worked more consistently with saving words to a custom collection using the Shortcuts, as the Shortcut often crashes or doesn’t compete that part once it tries to add the word I got the definition for to the collection. I also want to mention that the widget that has the ‘speak aloud’ feature to pronounce the word also skips the word when I press it, and I’d really love it if it only spoke it aloud so I can do it multiple times before pressing the actual skip button (or shuffle button). If I do get multiple times to have it speak aloud, it then skips multiple words immediately on its own, which is annoying. Please fix this as well!
