  1. 5/5Great app

Worth the price. My plug and reminder, you are paying for Deaf individuals work compensation which is a big deal. Second, I have been taking classes with people in my local ASL Deaf cohort and decided to try this out to support my receptive and maintenance skills. It teaches features of sign, fingerspelling and builds in a very visual way that Deaf people teach as well as uses ASL grammar which, as a hearing person has been the biggest learning curve since the structure is different and using this app helps to demonstrate that and break it down in an interactive way. This is learning a second language, it doesn’t follow English grammatical rules, so if you become frustrated, yes, you’re learning a different language not just a visual version of What you speak. Looking through the upcoming courses and the concepts that this app will teach me in the future, I am excited to use this app as a support as I continue to interact with my local community and develop my ability to effectively communicate with them. Additionally, the dictionary tool is absolutely amazing and I love looking up a word I haven’t gotten to that I don’t already know. Yes, over the year it may feel pricey to some, but remember, you are compensating paying real people and this will help you to engage with real people in the world. The perspective of that can shift that this really is pretty small relative to the impact you can have on others.

  2. 5/5Not just ASL. Deaf culture, too!

I almost never take the time to write reviews, but this app is fabulous. I am on a 43 day streak, and I am so delighted with my progress. For context, I spent some time in deaf circles as a child, more than 40 years ago, but have had almost no ASL practice since then. In just a few entertaining minutes a day, this app has helped me regain everything I once knew and then some. It starts out deceptively easy, but has a phenomenal depth of both ASL (including grammar!) and Deaf culture. I am so glad that I got a year subscription. I often do a lesson first thing in the morning, but if I forget, it gently reminds me not to break my streak come afternoon. My progress has been such that, last weekend, I felt confident enough to show up at a deaf gathering in my town. I really like that there is no sound and that the teachers are deaf themselves. This forces me to really work on understanding sign language, rather than lipreading or depending on speech or captions. My only suggestion would be to add a feedback button. There are occasional text errors which could easily be pointed out if there was a forum to do so. overall, highly highly highly recommend this app. I’m having a blast with it!

  3. 2/5Not actually a free app

I was stoked the first few days using this app. I pay for a yearly Duolingo subscription and it is expensive but they don’t offer ASL. I’m using it for Spanish. This app operates pretty much just like Duolingo so it was easy for me to use. Until…I go to continue to the next lesson and I can’t. The entire app ceases to work after a couple days without an expensive membership. I am very low income currently and likely won’t be able to continue my paid Duolingo next renewal either let alone adding a whole other expensive one on too. At least on Duolingo they have a free version. Not here. I don’t understand why it is listed as a free app. It might as well just show as a paid app. It doesn’t count as a free app if only the first 2 or 3 lessons are free and then the entire app becomes unusable without an expensive subscription. They definitely make it seem like it’ll continue that way and they just dangle the carrot and rip it away. I was excited to be practicing ASL again. I took a few semesters in college and haven’t used it since. It’s been cool to see how, at least in the couple lessons I got to do, that I remembered all of the signs. I was excited to continue and see how much I remembered. I know for a fact I have learned sooo much more Spanish off of apps than years in school ever did. I was hoping the same for ASL. Guess not. Developers, do one of the two things please, be honest and show it is a paid app or make a free version. You can’t have it both ways without being shady. Do better.

  4. 3/5I don’t have 18$ to give you every month

When I got this app I was so excited to learn ASL. I did the first lesson then came back on the app just to see that it wasn’t completed. I tried to complete it but it told me to start the free trial. I declined the offer but then shortly realized that there was nothing else for me to do if I didn’t start the free trial. Somebody who is deaf, non verbal, or has a friend that is deaf etc. might need to learn ASL without going to an in person class. The first lesson only gave you words like hello, welcome, how, me, you, and fine. I wanted to be able to know and learn ASL, but to do that you have to start a free trial. not everybody is able to pay $18 a month for an app. I wanted to learn ASL and join the ASL community but now I can’t do that because i don’t have $18 to give you every month. I still gave this app 3 stars because if someone were to go premium and continue with the lessons the lessons are very easy to understand and show you how to learn the word very well even including a slow down button if they are signing to fast. But I am still mad because I would like to have a conversation in ASL which they give you if you continue the app with premium. In all the app would be lovely if it didn’t have that outstanding price you would have to pay before you could even complete the first lesson. Thank you for reading my review and I hope this helps with your decision of buying this app or not. 😊😊

  5. 4/5Wonderful but...

This is a fantastic app. I found it easy to use and the spaced repetition is excellent. The vocabulary and conversations felt (for the most part) useful and appropriate for the real world. One complaint was the end of section reviews. They were so repetitive I didn't even have to see the word/phrase before answering because they showed the same one so many times. Also there were times I finished the reviews and there was an error forcing me to retake them. I just stopped doing those altogether. But that didn't matter too much and didn't affect the learning process. My bigger issue was the pricing structure. I 100% support paying for this app and even paid for a full year. It was (with caveat) absolutely worth the ~$100 for a year. BUT that should have been a one-time, for life price. I finished the entire series in about 6 months and the app hasn't added any new lessons since I bought it. There wasn't any point in renewing to pay another $100 yearly (or a monthly) fee to repeat the same material, but now I don't have access the the lessons I already took. That's really frustrating and disappointing. Again, I am not complaining about paying - an app like this shouldn't be free. But continuing to pay without new content is problematic and not worth it. I'm sorry I can't keep using this app as I really loved it.
